60,000 Teacher Jobs Restored with Stimulus, Educators Say It's Not Enough
New America Media, News Report, Rupa Dev and Aaron Glantz, Posted: Oct 24, 2009
More than 60,000 of the 250,000 education jobs saved nationally by President Barack Obama's stimulus package were in California, according to data released this week by the California Department of Education.
Community activists expressed relief over the saved jobs, but Fred Glass, spokesperson for the California Federation of Teachers, cautioned that while the stimulus package "stopped some of the bleeding," the state still had to lay off an estimated 10,000 teachers.
"It's slightly better than we thought it would be," Glass said. "But that's because most of the districts depleted their reserves or found other ways to keep cuts away from the classroom ... They cut back on supplies, gardeners, school support secretaries, and food service workers."
"You can't have a functional school without all that," he said.
The $4.9 billion in education funding that California received under the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act partially offset deep cuts to classrooms that were made by politicians in Sacramento. Rather than resulting in new teachers being hired, the stimulus package caused fewer teachers to be laid off.

In early September, on schoolyards and in hallways across the country, the same excited, anxious question rings out: “Who'd you get?” Students know that the heart of education beats inside the individual teacher. When NAM asked young people in our youth communications programs to write about the one teacher who’d really made a difference, they barely had to think before the keys were flying. This feature supported by funding from the California Teachers Association.

Months ago playwright Orna Rawls asked me if I would like to direct a play for the Quickies in the Park show. She had just seen a short film I had directed, "Hold On". I was immediately interested, and excited about trying out my directing in a stage production for the first time. As my bio for the program stated, I have had years of experience in film, but none in theater, besides the lone time I acted in a play (written by Orna Rawls, and directed by J. Sibley Law) last winter. This play, I found out was entitled "Shakespeare for the Shakespeare Challenged", and was a comedy written by local playwright Jack Rushen. I cast two actors who I have known and worked with before, the brilliant David Thomas McLaine and Mike Greca. I knew they would both be hysterical, and have great chemistry on stage. And lo and behold, to no great surprise by me, they did! This was a great learning experience for me as a director, and I was absolutely pleased with their performance in front of the audience of 150 that night!! I look forward to directing a play again!

Adopt-A-Classroom increases opportunity for student success by empowering teachers with community partners and funds to purchase resources for the classroom.
Teachers, our education system’s most integral component, suffer from inadequate resources in the classroom, which, in turn, hampers their ability to meet students’ needs. To compensate, teachers spend an average of $1,200 of their own money every school year - totally $4 billion annually - purchasing materials for their classrooms, undermining teacher morale, and ultimately student success.
Adopt-A-Classroom empowers teachers with additional funds to mitigate their out-of-pocket expenses and to purchase hands-on learning resources so they can transform their classrooms into vibrant centers for learning. The community support not only bolsters teacher morale but also student enthusiasm for school.Adopt-A-Classroom increases opportunity for student success by empowering teachers... more
I grew up in Indiana -
a university town - with
parents as university
professors in a family
of compliant scholars where grades
Were like money and I had none
to speak of … left alone in a
desert to fend for myself and
now I’m glad I did find my own
spiritual instincts the hard way
Through profound misunderstanding
about me – who I was – or what
language I spoke condemned me to
an environment, maternal,
barren, unable to locate
A clued-in educator for
my particular temperament.
I survived, and I pray you will
too in higher education
where the air is thinner and the
Culture suffers from a super-
abundance of pretentious hacks,
corner-watchers, hall monitors,
felonious fragmenters of
humanity specializing
In summarized values stuffed through
a gap in your head and filled with
vast amounts of information
void of clarity, grace or form.
Modern university is
Out of touch with mainstream reason.
Simply put, that pillared building
is grandiose housing for an
illegitimate bathhouse steeped
in perverse philosophy taught
By the elite pied pipers of
rhetorical progressivism
cut off from the temple of truth
distant from the virtuous whole
far from the wisdom of the soul.

Artist David Ingham was thrown out of school when he was 12 by headmaster Marcelus Forster - who told him at the time he would 'never amount to much'.
Well, 55 years later Ingham - who went on to become an art teacher - has been commissioned to paint a portrait that very headmaster.
He said: "The secretary of the Old Boy's Society got in touch because he knew of my work. He said 'we'd like you to do one of Mr Forster', I said 'you do know he expelled me don't you?'"
Ingham said he used to wind up the headmaster: "One day he said 'get out here and I'll cane you' and I said 'come and get me.' He went to the head after that and I was expelled."
But it's all water under the bridge now. The portrait will hang in the school's library.Artist David Ingham was thrown out of school when he was 12 by headmaster Marcelus... more

Beginning with the infamous Mary Kay Letourneau case in 1995, Americans have been fascinated with female teachers who cross the line and have sexual relationships with their students. According to an AP study, between 2001 and 2005, 2,570 educators had their teaching credentials revoked, denied, surrendered or sanctioned following allegations of sexual misconduct. While only ten percent of those teachers were women, female teachers who have slept with their students receive the lion’s share of media attentionBeginning with the infamous Mary Kay Letourneau case in 1995, Americans have been... more
