Women’s rights are increasingly heralded as a useful propaganda device to further imperial designs.
Western heads of state, UN officials and military spokespersons will invariably praise the humanitarian dimension of the October 2001 US-NATO led invasion of Afghanistan, which allegedly was to fight religious fundamentalists, help little girls go to school, liberate women subjected to the yoke of the Taliban.
The logic of such a humanitarian dimension of the Afghan war is questionable. Lest we forget, Al Qaeda and the Taliban were supported from the very outset of the Soviet-Afghan war by the US, as part of a CIA led covert operation.Women’s rights are increasingly heralded as a useful propaganda device to... more

In North Carolina, GOP lawmakers are pushing an anti-abortion measure that could force clinics across the state to close their doors. SB 308 would place unnecessary restrictions on abortion providers that are likely to put them out of business.
Over-regulating abortion providers — an attempt to indirectly restrict women’s access to abortion services by forcing health clinics to shut down — is a popular anti-choice tactic advancing in states like Texas, Mississippi, North Dakota, and Alabama. But women’s health advocates in North Carolina are fighting back, reminding anti-choice lawmakers that it’s not their place to interfere with women’s personal medical decisions.
At a rally against SB 308 on Wednesday in the state’s capital city, North Carolinians sent a clear message: Lawmakers don’t know why women may need to seek an abortion, and they shouldn’t continue to place restrictions on the legal medical procedure. “You don’t walk in a woman’s shoes. You don’t know what she’s going through,” Paige Johnson, representing the Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina, said at the protest. “So don’t try to legislate her health decisions.”
As part of the protest, hundreds of women and men laid out shoes on the Halifax Mall in Raleigh, a symbol of support for every woman who wants the right to make her own reproductive health decisions based on her own unique circumstances. They also photographed messages of solidarity (all images via Planned Parenthood Action Center of North Carolina):

By Dylan DeBarr.WWH/CJE – I had just been told that my daughter was raped. I glance toward the door. I feel drunk, as if my legs can’t hold my weight. I grasp the window sill and push my forehead against the window. I need air. I gasp, choking on the silent scream that sticks in my throat. Thick, like molasses, I can’t swallow it or vomit it up.By Dylan DeBarr.WWH/CJE – I had just been told that my daughter was raped. I... more

The level of hatred that pervades the Republican right never ceases to amaze me. To the complete surprise of most of us, John Boehner, aka Agent Orange, caved-in on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). He did so by allowing a few relatively sane Republicans to vote with all the Democrats, except one who was absent. Nevertheless, 138 Republicans voted for violence against women. An abortion pill, officially known as RU-486, is the earliest available abortion option for a woman. A patient could be as little as one week pregnant and take the pill to terminate. But despite the incredibly early stage at which the pill is administered, a new bill proposed in the Indiana State Senate would require women to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound before they are permitted to simply swallow the medication.
Indiana’s effort follows a sweeping national trend to mandate the medically unnecessary and invasive procedure as a way to create barriers to abortion access. And theirs goes a step further, by also forcing clinics that administer the pill to meet all of the same requirements as a surgical abortion clinic:
The provision is included in Senate Bill 371, which also would require any clinic that dispenses the drug — known as RU-486 — to meet the same requirements as a clinic that performs surgical abortions, though physicians’ offices would be exempt.
Those requirements, opponents say, potentially would force the Planned Parenthood clinic in Lafayette to close. That clinic offers the abortion pill but does not perform surgical abortions. If the bill passes, the clinic would have to widen hallways and doorways to meet state specifications for surgery and install anesthesia, surgical and sterilization equipment. An abortion pill, officially known as RU-486, is the earliest available abortion... more

Nothing should be more clearly non-partisan than protecting women from violence. Opposing such a basic sentiment could not be more overtly shameful. The need is clear: A full third of Native American women will be raped in their lifetimes; an even higher number will experience physical and emotional abuse. Lesbian and gay people will be brutalized at the same rate as general society -- approximately 27% -- but will have far bleaker prospects of finding help.
Some 45% of those seeking refuge at a shelter were turned away, and 55% who sought restraining orders against abusers were denied. Undocumented women in the United States risk being held hostage by abusive spouses who lord citizenship over them as a means of control. These same husbands often threaten deportation and separation from children if their wives seek help or report abuse. The need is clear: A full third of Native American women will be raped in their... more

Hundreds of women in Delhi have applied for gun licences following the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman by six men in a bus in the city last month.
The news underlines the widespread sense of insecurity in the city, deep before the incident and deeper now, and the lack of faith in law enforcement agencies.
The ashes of the victim of the attack – who died on Friday after 13 days in hospitals in India and Singapore, and was cremated in Delhi in a secret ceremony under heavy security on Sunday – were scattered on the surface of the Ganges river, sacred to Hindus, in northern India on Tuesday.
The case has provoked an unprecedented debate about endemic sexual harassment and violence in India. Tens of thousands have protested across the country, calling for harsher laws, better policing and a change in culture.
Politicians, initially caught off-guard, have now promised new legislation to bring in fast-track courts and harsher punishments for sexual assault. The six men accused of the attack are to be formally charged with murder later this week and potentially face execution.
Indian media are currently reporting incidents of sexual violence that would rarely gain attention previously. In the last 24 hours these have included a teenager fleeing repeated abuse by her brother, who was allegedly assaulted on a bus by a conductor, a 15-year-old held for 15 days by three men in a village in Uttar Pradesh and repeatedly assaulted, an 11-year-old allegedly raped by three teenagers in the north-eastern city of Guwahati and two cases of rape in the city of Amritsar.
One case reported on Tuesday involved a woman, also in a village in Uttar Pradesh, who suffered 90% burns after being doused in kerosene, allegedly by a man who had been stalking her for months.
There were signs that a further taboo was about to be broken when one of India's best-known English-language television presenters asked viewers who had experienced abuse from a family member to contact her.
The rush for firearms will cause concern, however. Police in Delhi have received 274 requests for licences and 1,200 inquiries from women since 18 December, two days after the woman and a male friend were attacked in a bus cruising on busy roads between 9pm and 10pm.

I trust that most of you remember the huge cry of public outrage, when the Komen Foundation joined forces with the Republican Party in an attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. At the center of that controversy was Karen Handel, a thoroughly ugly woman. I’m not being sexist. Some people are just so ugly on the inside that no amount of glamor can hide it. Like the poltergeist of Hollywood fame, she’s back.I trust that most of you remember the huge cry of public outrage, when the Komen... more

Well, that was anticlimactic. We listened to a grueling (for voters) 4-year long campaign during which we witnessed the worst political spectacle of the epoch. If, "liar, liar, pants on fire" meant anything, there wouldn't be a pair of Levis left on the planet. The country immersed itself in a boiling cauldron of rancor so deep there is no word in English to adequately describe it. And yet, after all that, we have essentially the same balance of power as before.Well played America, well-played.
It's time for a few observations and maybe a little advice. For the "mandate" crowd, winning an election by the skin of your teeth does not a mandate make. For the "it's imponderable we lost" crowd, no it isn't. You acted like a bunch of jackwads. For the "gridlock will finally break" crowd, what makes you think reelecting largely the same people who are already bought and paid for is going to break gridlock?
But since the nation is populated with a large ignorati caucus, let's break it down real simple like:Well, that was anticlimactic. We listened to a grueling (for voters) 4-year long... more

We’ve been watching a new political animal prowl the campaign trail in recent weeks. He has etched his sketch so thoroughly that it is impossible to see the “severely conservative” Romney in the garb of what Bill Clinton calls “Moderate Mitt”. Don’t believe it! Extremism is the status quo for the Republican Party, and more so for Romney than others. We’ve been watching a new political animal prowl the campaign trail in recent... more
