Super Bowl Sunday: Women Paid 10 Cents to Sew $80 NFL Peyton Manning Jerseys

NFL jerseys have been sewn under illegal sweatshop conditions at the Chi Fung factory in San Salvador for at least the last four years. In 2006 and 2007, it appears that the NFL jerseys being sewn at Chi Fung were a subcontract order from another garment factory called Partex. In 2008 and 2009, it is unclear if Reebok placed the orders for its exclusive line of NFL jerseys with Chi Fung directly, or whether production continued under subcontract agreements. At any rate, according to Chi Fung’s website, they are an “approved Reebok producer.”

If you’re heading to the “Big Dance” this weekend—that is, the Super Bowl—grab a copy of the local independent weekly and learn how fucked up Florida is. This week’s issue of the Broward-Palm Beach New Times comes with a “Vice Guide” for Super Bowl revelers, which includes tips like “Scoring Coke like a Local.”
But if you’re scoring cocaine in South Florida, you might as well be sporting a five o’clock shadow, loafers and a flourescent sport coat. These days, everyone in South Florida knows that prescription drugs, particularly OxyContin and Xanax, is what everybody’s doing.
“As in the 80’s and 90’s cocaine was a big thing, now prescriptions have just exploded,” Sgt. Richard Pisanti of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office told Vanguard correspondent Mariana van Zeller last May.
Or as the New Times puts it in their “Vice Guide: Procuring Party Pills”:
“In Florida, OxyContin and Xanax aren't the new cocaine; they're coke plus heroin, pot, meth, and all hallucinogens combined.”
See, the New Times has got you covered. And the great thing about their guide to scoring prescription drugs is that after reading it you can just flip to the back to the paper and find 10 pages of advertisements for the pain clinic/Dr. Feelgoods they tell you supply the pills. You know, 10 pages of ad revenue that help pay for stories like where to get your pills. It’s a beautiful cycle.
I’ll give the New Times credit for at least disclosing some disturbing statistics about Florida’s prescription drug problem:
“In 2008, about half the illegal prescription drugs in this country came from the Sunshine State, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency…Three times as many people here die from prescription pills than from all other drugs combined, according to a Florida Medical Examiners Commission report that was published in 2008.”
But for a better picture of what’s going in the “Colombia of prescription drugs” check out the Vanguard documentary “The OxyContin Express.”
Watch the full episode at Current.com.
Or, of course, you can follow the New Times guide, learn for yourself—and hopefully not be one of the 11 people in Florida who OD everyday from pills.

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - The Indianapolis Colts battled back to beat the New York Jets 30-17 for the American Football Conference (AFC) championship and advance to the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Sports
The Colts will play the winner of the National Football Conference (NFC) title game between the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings in the Super Bowl in Miami on February 7 in Miami.
Quarterback Peyton Manning rescued Indianapolis from a 17-6 deficit late in the second quarter by throwing three touchdown passes as the Colts scored 24 unanswered points against the NFL's top-rated defense.
"We talked about being patient. We knew it would be a four-quarter game. We didn't panic," Manning said during the trophy presentation.
"It's very special. It's great to win this championship at home," he added to deafening roars from a franchise record crowd of 67,650 at the domed Lucas Oil stadium.
Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell came out on top in a match-up of rookie head coaches against Jets chief Rex Ryan.
"Our guys have always been a very confident bunch. They do a great job of hanging in there," said Caldwell. "Peyton had an outstanding game. He's great at making adjustments."
Ryan tipped his cap to the Colts: "Obviously, they're the cream of the crop right now. With Peyton Manning, if you can't disrupt his rhythm he's going to kill you and we couldn't disrupt it enough."
Indianapolis return to the Super Bowl for the second time in four years after winning the 2006 NFL championship with a victory over the Chicago Bears, also in Miami.
The wild card Jets, who surprised Indianapolis with some long passing strikes in the first half, slumped when faced with Manning's pinpoint passing to his young band of receivers.
THIRD UPSET
New York's remarkable journey through the playoffs had seen them beat Cincinnati and San Diego and for a while they threatened a third upset to grab a place in the Super Bowl for the first time in 41 years.
Indianapolis had taken 3-0 lead on a 25-yard Matt Stover field goal early in the second quarter when Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez hurled a strike to Braylon Edwards streaking down the left sideline for an 80-yard touchdown play.
The Colts drove down the field but again were kept out of the end zone and Indianapolis settled for another field goal, a 19-yarder that made it 7-6.
The Jets hit back. Brad Smith, operating out of the wildcat alignment, threw only his second pass of the season to find Jerricho Cotchery open for a 45-yard gain to the 12-yard-line.
Sanchez cashed in with a nine-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dustin Keller and when Jim Leonhard recovered a Colts fumble, Jay Feely rammed home a 48-yard field goal for a 17-6 Jets lead.
With time running out in the half, Manning hit rookie Austin Collie on three straight connections for 18, 36 and 16 yards, the last for a touchdown that brought the Colts within four.
Sanchez, who was a brilliant 5-for-7 in passing for 124 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, could not sustain his early success as Manning took charge.
He lofted a perfect pass into the corner of the end zone on a fade route to Pierre Garcon in the Colts' first possession of the third quarter to put Indianapolis in front 20-17.
Manning, who completed 26 of 39 passes for 377 yards, followed with a 15-yard TD pass to tight end Dwight Clark, and Stover capped the win with a 21-yard field goal.INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - The Indianapolis Colts battled back to beat the New York Jets... more

The 2008 offensive rookie class was arguably one of the most NFL ready player pools in recent history; Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Steve Slaton, Matt Forte, Kevin Smith, Jonathan Stewart, Chris Johnson, Eddie Royal, and Desean Jackson were all starters who made an immediate and valuable impact with their respective teams. In our view at Gridiron Experts, the 2009 class will not be quite as deep as its predecessor, but as per usual it will have its shining stars. While it’s still early, all indications
are that these five offensive rookies will produce at a high level this season.
RB-Knowsean Moreno: The best running back in this class. A mix of great speed, hands, and elusiveness will afford him a ton of action this season. It is likely Knowsean will start for the Broncos, although it is difficult to tell with the massive rotation they currently own. NFL Over/Under Season Win Totals-Mike Rodriguez
This is the Over and Under odds for team wins in the 2009 season. For those who don’t know, the numbers next to the win totals are the payouts as far as what you need to put up in order to place the bet. For example to bet on the Patriots to win Over 11.5 wins next year, you would have to put up $120 to win $100 (Over -120). If the odds are a positive number then it works the opposite way; for example to bet the Titans to not win more than 9.5 games next year (Under +120) you would win $120 on a $100 bet. It’s always easier to use a $100 bet to figure out how much you would need to bet, but is not required as a minimum to place a bet.NFL Over/Under Season Win Totals-Mike Rodriguez
