When I asked about the whole project a few minutes ago, the manager pointed out some photos I hadn’t noticed before, photos of the park during its heyday and photos of founder Mary Elitch (1856-1936). One of the facility’s staff walked me around the office building, showing me the pictures they have on display, and the manager said that there are lots more in storage – they just haven’t waded through it all to figure out what to do with them.
I’m neither a historian nor a photographer (as I think my occasional photos here have clearly demonstrated), but this bit of information has my attention. I find myself wanting to see just what they have in the basement, and if I can take along someone who knows enough about the history of Elitch and the park that bore her name, how incredible would that be?When I asked about the whole project a few minutes ago, the manager pointed out some... more

A headless monk, a sudden chill, objects moving of own accord.
A new ride at an amusement park? No, the strange, seemingly paranormal, behaviour was experienced by workmen building a water ride at Thorpe Park, one of the country's biggest theme parks.
There were reports of workers feeling like someone was watching over their shoulder and sudden cold feelings being experienced.
As a result of the ghostly sightings, and fears that an ancient burial ground has been disturbed, the project was moved to another site.
A paranormal detection agency was then called in to the park in Chertsey, Surrey, to carry out tests and found that a burial ground or settlement could have been disturbed.
Managers at the park decided to relocate the ride to another area of the park and also called in a forensic team to carry out further investigations.
The 64ft-tall water ride, Storm Surge, was originally planned for an area known as Monk's Walk, an old footpath that has linked the ruins of nearby Chertsey Abbey to Thorpe Church since AD666.
The ride's foundations would have been over an area of the park where stone coffins have previously been excavated.
'The results were so strong, we felt the only explanation could be that an ancient burial ground or settlement was being disturbed, prompting the extra paranormal activity'
Mike Vallis, divisional director of Thorpe Park, said: 'It became apparent that something strange was going on when teams started clearing Storm Surge's initial site.
'Staff reports of eerie goings-on shot up and the only physical change in the park, at that time, was the beginning of ground preparation work for the new ride.
'As employees were getting freaked out, we decided to call on an expert to see whether there was anything to report but had no idea of the dramatic effects.'
Jim Arnold, of South West London Paranormal, said: 'We carry out these kinds of investigations quite regularly, with medium to weak results being reported on a weekly basis.
'Thorpe Park, however, was more striking as results were picked up immediately, with orbs, ghostly images in photography and ouija reaction results being strongest around the site where they were proposing to build Storm Surge.
Forensic geophysicist Peter Masters, of Cranfield University, has since been called in to analyse the site, using deep ground radar.
He said: 'From the preliminary investigations, we have picked up signatures similar to that of a burial ground - possibly ancient.
'Although this could simply be an old building, with Thorpe Park's history, the investigation is definitely worth continuing.'

Eighty-one percent of amusement parks will hold Halloween or fall-themed events this year, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.
But fewer than half of them offered Halloween attractions 15 years ago, illustrating the tremendous growth in recreation related to the holiday, according to an informal survey conducted by IAAPA among more than 100 park managers.
Some parks offer haunted walks and other fun for thrill-seekers, complete with zombies and bloody axemen. Other places are geared for kiddies, with pumpkin-decorating and hay rides. And some cities have haunted houses created from abandoned prisons and other creepy places using Hollywood-style special effects.
Here is information on some of these attractions...Eighty-one percent of amusement parks will hold Halloween or fall-themed events this... more

Fancy sliding down a giant slide at St Pancras? A trampoline and a slide might soon take pride of place at a disused Victorian gas holder near St Pancras station.
The gas holder is a listed building and cannot be dismantled, so a competition is being held to decide the site’s future.
The giant slide to take visitors around the edges of the gas holder and a rooftop trampoline would let people to bounce high above King's Cross.

Thorpe Park in Surrey is banning visitors from putting their hands in the air while riding its rollercoasters following complaints about body odour.
The park is even putting up signs to tell visitors to keep their arms down and 'Say no to BO'.
Mike Vallis, a director at Thorpe Park, said: "We've found that when the temperature tops 77F (25C) the level of unpleasant smells can become unacceptable and we do receive complaints. Our rides are really scary and people tend to sweat more than normal due to the fear and anticipation they experience while queueing up so it can get really pongy. Therefore, we felt a ban in temperatures of 25C plus would be the best way to ensure our guests have the most enjoyable experience and aren't exposed to any unsavoury armpits."Thorpe Park in Surrey is banning visitors from putting their hands in the air while... more

Almost everyone has attended an amusement park, county fair, or sporting event and had their face painted (don't forget Halloween). The designs are usually crude and simple, done by a friend, relative, or greasy haired teen who understands there are 10 others waiting their turn in line.
In the examples below, all discovered on Flickr, the artists have done an exceptional job of taking face painting to the extreme. A precise hand and creative mind have brought these images to life; in some cases it's even a skewed expression.

Amputee Steve Simmonds has swum at the Paralympics for Australia, won five world disabled waterski titles and walked the Kokoda Track - but he's been banned from riding a Gold Coast theme park's waterslide.
Mr Simmonds is angry and upset after being told he could not ride a WhiteWater World slide - or indeed any of the park's rides - with his five-year-old daughter.
"I lost my leg in an accident when I was six and this is the first time in my life that I've felt discriminated against," Mr Simmonds, 34, said.
The NSW holidaymaker was ordered off the rides when he and his family went to the Dreamworld water park on Wednesday.
"I was told I wasn't allowed to go on the slide and had to go and see the park's medical people," he said.
"They told me I couldn't go on any of the rides because my $12,000 carbon fibre prosthesis is classed as a metal object. I could have walked up the steps and taken my leg off but how would I have gotten my leg back to the bottom?"
"I represented Australia at the Barcelona Paralympics, I've won five world disabled waterski titles and I walked the Kokoda track last year but apparently I'm not fit enough to go on a kids' waterslide," he said.
"The thing that annoys me the most is that with my artificial leg, I'm not disabled. It doesn't fall off so it can't hurt anyone.
"I just think they need to look at their policies and apply a bit of common sense."
A Dreamworld spokeswoman said the park understood Mr Simmonds was 'disappointed and angry' but his prosthesis was considered unsafe.
She said the ride manufacturers' specifications prohibited metal objects because of fears they could cut fibreglass piping and injure patrons.
"It's a really difficult situation - we understand this gentleman is an elite athlete and probably a really responsible citizen," she said. "But at the end of the day, this is about the safety of everybody in the park."
She said the Simmonds family had accepted a refund.Amputee Steve Simmonds has swum at the Paralympics for Australia, won five world... more
