The local food movement has opened the door to a new crop of would-be gardeners who lack access to a patch of earth on which to plant a garden (myself included). For some, the land dilemma can be resolved by planting seeds in a shared community garden.
But what about the folks who don't have even an inch of outdoor space to call their own? Or on-the-go types, who for reasons unknown prefer to tote their pocket-size gardens around town with them? Eschewing the constraints of traditional, land-based gardens altogether, some gardening hobbyists instead choose to grow plants on mobile platforms that can be wheeled, carried or floated from place to place.

In a world where there are more overweight human beings than there are malnourished, it is easy to recognize that a lack of food is hardly the real issue; it is a more balanced redistribution that is needed. Americans are in the eye of a recession; very few remain unscathed. Urban Agriculturalist and gardening extraordinaire Jason Boarde has witnessed first hand how getting the food from the, “farm to the plate to the charity is more than twice as expensive as farm to plate.”
As far as the real “green” goes, Urban Agriculture could potentially save millions of dollars per year. By cutting out the middle-man, local agencies, such as SOVA, wouldn’t have to purchase as much as half of their food. Not only that, but while in transit, food that is either being collected or dropped off is far more expensive that’s its locally grown, fresh counterparts in gas and inefficiency alone.

As a builder, I think it is safe to say that I am a pretty good writer. I pondered for more than two years how I would go about building a greenhouse in my backyard. It was part of the The Plan. When I moved my family to the Sunshine Coast, we would do what ever we could to avoid buying produce from abroad, or for that matter, buying it at all.As a builder, I think it is safe to say that I am a pretty good writer. In a time of economic uncertainty and rising food prices, it it always a good idea to have a garden to provide extra food for you and your family. Besides providing a source of food in an emergency, a garden is also a great source of wonderful vegetables which are MUCH healthier to eat than most of the food you can get at the supermarket. In a time of economic uncertainty and rising food prices, it it always a good idea to... more

It seems kind of hypocritical to be buying organic salad mix in a plastic container, but the truth of the matter is: A. greens seem to stay fresher in plastic clamshells than the alternate choice of plastic bags, and B. until they start making biodegradable plastic more widely available (and more affordable) we just have to make due with what we’re given. (Or C. start buying local fruits and vegetables and forgo all grocery store produce.) In the meantime, here’s a fun and innovative way to reuse those plastic salad containers (and keep them out of landfills).
I found this article on Earthbound Farm’s website on how to turn plastic clamshells — which their organic salad mixes come in — into mini planters. They give step-by-step instructions in PDF and video form (see below) on everything you need to create your own mini garden, even where you can purchase organic seeds online.
Why not flex those green thumbs and start your own garden in honor of Earth Day?

Recycling old car windshields seems to be the hot new thing amongst members of the Green community. It’s not hard to do and it’s good for the environment, so why not!? You’d be surprised by the number of consumer and industrial goods that are already produced from recycled windshields. These recycled greenhouses are catching on in French gardens and even urban areas.
