Queues are forming at the Zimbabwean voting booths as the country begins to decide whether the current president Robert Mugabe remains in power.
People are already complaining that they have not been allowed to cast their votes to which the Mugabe regime responded bluntly, "We don't rig elections". His challengers are Morgan Tsvangirai of the MDC party and ex-finance minister and independent Simba Makoni.
Voting results are expected to be in this Monday when the country will have a freshly elected president.Queues are forming at the Zimbabwean voting booths as the country begins to decide... more

Zimbabweans began voting today in the most crucial election since independence from Britain in 1980, with veteran President Robert Mugabe facing the biggest challenge of his 28-year-rule. Some voters slept at the polling stations while others began queuing before dawn. Voting began just after 7.00 am (5.00 am British time) and is scheduled to end at 5pm British time. With the once-prosperous nation's economy in ruins, former guerrilla leader Mugabe must defeat a formidable two-pronged attack from veteran opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and ruling party defector Simba Makoni. The country now suffers the world's worst inflation at over 100,000 percent, a rampant HIV/AIDS epidemic that has contributed to a radical reduction in life expectancy, a virtually worthless currency and chronic shortages of food and fuel.
Yesterday the BBC reported - 'Zimbabwe's security forces have been put on full alert amid fears Saturday's election could spark violence similar to that in recent Kenyan polls. Candidates are on a final day of campaigning, with the two main rivals to President Robert Mugabe raising fears of widespread vote-rigging.'Zimbabweans began voting today in the most crucial election since independence from... more

Supporters of the Zimbabwean opposition party Movement for Democratic Change were reportedly forced by Mugabe's intelligence offers to take down their party's campaign posters and then eat them.
According to Amnesty, the officials forced the opposition supporters to take down their posters and then chew and swallow them.
"We continue to receive reports of intimidation, harassment and violence against perceived supporters of opposition candidates - with many in rural regions fearful that there will be retribution after the elections," said Amnesty's Zimbabwe researcher, Simeon Mawanza, who has recently returned from the country.
The US state department has also spoken out on the Mugabe regime, calling on the Zimbabwean government, inclusive of its electoral commission to "take concrete actions to address these significant shortcomings, including respecting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the Zimbabwean people."

"Robert Mugabe addresses party supporters in Mahusekwa, Zimbabwe, 5 March, 2008
Mr Mugabe blames foreign enemies for destroying Zimbabwe's economy
Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has approved legislation giving local owners the right to take a majority share of foreign companies.
Mr Mugabe's formal approval of the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Bill comes three weeks ahead of his country's presidential elections.
Under the legislation, every company must have at least 51% of their shares owned by black Zimbabweans. "
Look, I think local ownership over corporations is a good idea. I think that Africans should control Africa.
But I also think that Mugabe is a mad man.
I also really like his outfit."Robert Mugabe addresses party supporters in Mahusekwa, Zimbabwe, 5 March, 2008... more

During Robert Mugabe's 28-year rule, Zimbabwe has been transformed from a from a prosperous economic hub to a cruel joke on its people. Inflation is at least 15,000%, basic commodities are in short supply, and four million people need food aid. Neighbouring South Africa's attempt to broker a settlement of Zimbabwe's political crisis lay in ruins yesterday when President Robert Mugabe called presidential and parliamentary elections for March 29. This leaves no time for President Thabo Mbeki to achieve his key aims in Zimbabwe: agreement on a new constitution and the repeal of tough security laws which critics say make a free and fair election impossible. Both factions of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) had called for the poll to be postponed to allow for a new constitution to be introduced.
