From Chapter 1, The Missing Link:
It is an odd phenomenon, the way we react to the idea of eating dogs and other inedible animals. Even stranger, though, is the way we don’t react to the idea of eating cows and other edible animals. There is an unexplained gap, a missing link, in our perceptual process when it comes to edible species; we fail to make the connection between meat and its animal source. Have you ever wondered why, out of tens of thousands of animal species, you probably feel disgusted at the idea of eating all but a tiny handful of them? What is most striking about our selection of edible and inedible animals is not the presence of disgust, but the absence of it. Why are we not averse to eating the very small selection of animals we have deemed edible?
From Chapter 2, Carnism, Ideology, and the Status Quo:
We tend to view the mainstream way of life as a reflection of universal values. Yet, what we consider normal is in fact nothing more than the beliefs and behaviors of the majority. Before the scientific revolution, for example, mainstream European beliefs held that the sky was made up of heavenly spheres that revolved around the earth, that the earth was the exalted center of the universe. This belief was so ingrained that to proclaim otherwise, as did Copernicus, and later Galileo, was to risk death. So what we refer to as mainstream is simply another way to describe an ideology that is so widespread – so entrenched – that its assumptions and practices are seen as simply common sense. It is considered fact rather than opinion, its practices a given rather than a choice. It’s the norm. It’s the way things are. And it’s the reason carnism has not been named until now.FROM THE BOOK

Brazil's government has granted an environmental licence for the construction of a controversial hydro-electric dam in the Amazon rainforest.
Environmental groups say the Belo Monte dam will cause devastation in a large area of the rainforest and threaten the survival of indigenous groups.
However, the government says whoever is awarded the project will have to pay $800m to protect the environment.
The initial approval was a key step before investors could submit bids.
Resignations
The proposal to build a hydro-electric dam on the Xingu river, a tributary of the Amazon in the northern state of Para, has long been a source of controversy.
The initial project was abandoned in the 1990s amid widespread protests both in Brazil and around the world.
The government says the scheme has been modified to take account of fears that it would threaten the way of life of the indigenous peoples who live in the area.
Brazilian Environment Minister Carlos Minc revealed that those who win the bidding process to build and operate Belo Monte will have to pay millions of dollars to protect the environment and meet 40 other conditions.
However, critics say diverting the flow of the Xingu river will still lead to devastation in a large area of the rainforest and damage fish stocks.
They say the lives of up to 40,000 people could be affected as 500 sq km of land would be flooded.
When it is completed, Belo Monte would be third largest hydro-electric dam in the world, after the Three Gorges in China and Itaipu, which is jointly run by Brazil and Paraguay. It is expected to provide electricity to 23 million Brazilian homes.

BEIJING (Reuters) - A proposal to jail people who eat dog meat for up 15 days has caused controversy in China, where dog hot pot is traditionally popular.
The first draft of a law against animal abuse, aiming to protect animals from being hurt or killed in a cruel manner, has been completed by a group of experts and will be raised for legislation this April, local media reported.
In particular, the draft suggested people caught eating dog or cat meat be jailed for up to 15 days and fined 5,000 yuan ($732.5), while businesses would be fined from 100,000 to 500,000 yuan, according to the Chongqing Evening News.
Debate immediately swirled in Chinese media and Internet forums.
"Eating cats and dogs is a shameless barbarian thing. Anyone with humanity would not kill these loyal friends of ours," a user named "Yuxiang999" posted on Xinhuanet.com.
Pet lovers' associations have sprung up in Chinese cities, with one liberation group last year ramming a truck full of caged cats to rescue them from being shipped to southern restaurants.
While many Chinese enjoy rich dog meat, especially during cold winters, some object to the practice in some regions of beating dogs to death to release the blood into the meat.
The China National Native Produce & Animal By-Products Import and Export Corporation backed the initiative, which it believes will improve overseas perceptions of Chinese exports.
Others insisted a ban on dog and cat meat was unrealistic.
"Banning such custom by law is inappropriate and unable to work," the Yangtze Evening News quoted Xu Huiqiang, chief of wild animal protection in Jiangsu province, where a dog meat recipe has been listed as a piece of cultural heritage.
An official of Leping, a city that has a traditional catering industry based on dog meat, told the Jiangxi News that the local economy and people's life would be terribly hurt by such a law.
"Cooking them alive must be punished but which meat to eat should be people's own choice," said a commentary on Xinhua Daily in Nanjing. "Some people in China still can't afford meat. We should not blindly copy Western values."
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has a black goat slaughtered at his house almost every day to ward off "evil eyes" and protect him from "black magic," a newspaper reported Wednesday.
A spokesman for the president told the Dawn newspaper the goats were slaughtered as an act of Sadaqah -- meaning "voluntary charity" in Islam whereby one gives out money or the meat of a slaughtered animal to the poor to win Allah's blessing and stave off misfortune.
"It has been an old practice of Mr Zardari to offer Sadaqah. He has been doing this for a long time," the spokesman, Farhatullah Babar, told the paper.
Pakistan is a predominantly Muslim country where many of the well-off offer Sadaqah. Though Muslim, many people also follow certain superstitious practices.
Hundreds of goats had been sacrificed at Zardari's house since he was sworn in September 2008, the Dawn newspaper reported.
It said Zardari's detractors would see in his "new-found religiosity" a sign of nervousness in the face of growing woes.
Zardari, who rose to power after the assassination of his wife, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, in late 2007, has become increasingly unpopular and faces a range of problems from Islamist militancy to a stagnant economy and political rivalry.
A Supreme Court ruling last month throwing out an amnesty for Zardari, several top aides and thousands of political activists and government figures triggered a political storm and expectation that Zardari was on his way out.

The Facts below clearly show that homicide was committed to cover up criminal acts of an organized well funded covert criminal plot to commit voter fraud.
Joseph Stalin said:
“It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.”
So then why are the people behind these capital crimes and, criminal acts not been prosecuted? These people today are free to walk the streets continuing their ongoing illegal activities and acts of treason against the citizens of United States.
As voters, the citizens who voted for you voted you into office for a reason... "to correct the wrongdoings and criminal acts of the past administration." Not, to continue with the covert coverups and on going status-quo of the past eight years. We expect and, also demand more.
Today, we find ourselves at a critical turning point... Our Nation is only as great the integrity of it's laws, the fairness of our Judicial System and, as strong as the pillars of our Constitution...
As citizens, we need to realize, that our nation has reached that point where our Judicial System has been twisted, bought and subverted by large corporations to where it no longer protects the rights of "All People" as was intended by our founding fathers. We have reached the point... where our country is no longer... "Our Country" anymore.
As a nation, we can't let these crimes; as mentioned by Clint Curtis and others in the attached documentary continue to go on unpunished. For the sake of justice and our credibility and our Nation. YOU, Mr. Obama were elected by the Citizens of this land to give you the power as Commander and Chief and as President " To mandate change". To act... To provide leadership to save our Democracy and our Nation from the acts of corporate and judicial misconduct and criminal corruption. A mandate given to you... to give the country back to it's people, " all its people". A clear mandate to balance the scales of Justice. A clear mandate to see that laws be enforced and crimes be punished and not overlooked with a wink and a nod to the highest bidder... as it is today.
Before you, is an opportunity to do Great Things... An historic opportunity... that should not be waisted.

The Clint Curtis Story is an incredible documentary which tells the story of a computer programmer who was contacted by a private company-Yang Enterprises- who have ties to accused chinese spies, to write a program that could be used to rig elections...what follows is the breaking of a massive conspiracy in which there would be hard evidence of vote manipulation via electronic voting machines-whether using Curtis's program or the twenty year old bootloader hack which, as show by students at Princeton University, could be loaded onto any of these machines in less than a minute; the sketchy firing of two employees-one being Curtis himself- from the Florida Dept of Transportation; corrupt ties to leading members of Diebold-one of two companies responsible for vote counting in the US; and a dead Florida DOT investigator- Raymond Lemme RIP- who was privately investigating the claims made by Curtis...who conveniently commited suicide in Georgia, where autopsies are not done on suicide victims, as opposed to Florida where an autopsy would have been automatic. COPAKE, N.Y. - Officials say a New York dairy farmer who methodically slaughtered 51 cows before taking his own life may have been trying to spare his family the burden of caring for the animals.
Dean Pierson was found dead Thursday on the floor of his barn in Copake.
Nearby, half his heard lay in their milking stalls, also dead of gunshot wounds.
Pierson left no explanation for what he’d done, just a note on the barn door warning whoever found it not to come in and to call the police.
But there appeared to be a method to his bloody work. He killed only the cows that required frequent milking.
Pierson’s wife says she wants to figure out how to keep the farm going.
She says she doesn’t want "all that work he put into it to go to nothing."
DEMOCRACY IS DEAD. HELLO FASCISM!!
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ruled that corporations may spend freely to support or oppose candidates for president and Congress, easing decades-old limits on their participation in federal campaigns.
By a 5-4 vote, the court on Thursday overturned a 20-year-old ruling that said corporations can be prohibited from using money from their general treasuries to pay for their own campaign ads. The decision, which almost certainly will also allow labor unions to participate more freely in campaigns, threatens similar limits imposed by 24 states.
It leaves in place a prohibition on direct contributions to candidates from corporations and unions.
Critics of the stricter limits have argued that they amount to an unconstitutional restraint of free speech, and the court majority apparently agreed.
“The censorship we now confront is vast in its reach,” Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his majority opinion, joined by his four more conservative colleagues.
However, Justice John Paul Stevens, dissenting from the main holding, said, “The court’s ruling threatens to undermine the integrity of elected institutions around the nation.”
Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor joined Stevens’ dissent, parts of which he read aloud in the courtroom.
The justices also struck down part of the landmark McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that barred union- and corporate-paid issue ads in the closing days of election campaigns.
Advocates of strong campaign finance regulations have predicted that a court ruling against the limits would lead to a flood of corporate and union money in federal campaigns as early as this year’s midterm congressional elections.
The decision, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, removes limits on independent expenditures that are not coordinated with candidates’ campaigns.
The case also does not affect political action committees, which mushroomed after post-Watergate laws set the first limits on contributions by individuals to candidates.
Corporations, unions and others may create PACs to contribute directly to candidates, but they must be funded with voluntary contributions from employees, members and other individuals, not by corporate or union treasuries.DEMOCRACY IS DEAD. HELLO FASCISM!!

OUR WORLD HAS MANY HEROS WORTHY OF RECIEVING A "COURAGE" AWARD... MICHAEL VICK IS NOT ONE OF THEM.
THE 'COURAGE' AWARD SHOULD BE TO THE MEN AND WOMAN WHO VOLUNTEERED THEMSELVES TO SAVING THE DOGS THAT SURVIVED THE HORRIFIC CRUELTY INFLICTED BY MICHAEL VICK.
THE P.O.S., MICHAEL VICK, HAS NEVER ONCE APOLOGIZED FOR THE PAIN, SUFFERING AND BARBARIC DEATHS THAT HE CAUSED TO THE DOGS.
When it was announced last month that Michael Vick was to be awarded the Ed Block Award for courage, I expressed my utter disbelief and despair. I encouraged readers to post their reactions as well, and I promised to send all to the Ed Block Foundation.
As of yet, I have not received word from anyone at the Foundation. However, I did come across this page on the Ed Block website, meant to serve as a response to the public outcry around Vick's nomination:
I couldn't have been more disappointed as I read the Foundation's defense of Vick's receipt of the award:
"...Michael Vick has been working with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Humane Society of the United States to promote awareness of the evils and dangers associated with dog fighting. As someone who paid a large debt for his role in this lifestyle he is uniquely equipped to educate at risk youths as to their perils..."
Granted, serving prison time does equip Vick to speak first-hand about life in prison. But it doesn't necessarily make someone a good role model, sincere advocate, or a changed person. Serving time for the crimes he committed did not take courage--or even a sense of duty. Vick had no choice in the matter; his sentence was mandated by law.
In an attempt to validate its position on Vick's award conferment, the Foundation goes on to offer quotes from other NFL luminaries.
Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid notes: "He's obviously very well-respected by his teammates."
Perhaps that says more about his teammates than it does about Vick. For someone who brings with him such an appalling history, earning the respect of your teammates ought to be the bare minimum. That respect is then the foundation from which to go forward, the first step in a long road. Not grounds for an award for courage.
Nor was Tony Dungy--Vick's mentor and considered by many to be the NFL's moral compass--disconcerted by the award: "... There are things that players know that each other are going through that maybe the public doesn't know... So I know it's one Michael is proud of, and there didn't seem to be any debate on that team who should get it."
When is someone affiliated with one of these organizations going to show real courage? When are they going to step up and say the right thing? That is, that Michael Vick has a long way to go. Simply attending practice, showing up for games, and not getting arrested is not sufficient cause for commendation. Millions of people across the country go to work and stay out of trouble on a daily basis. It's not a matter of courage, but one of necessity.
Neither does a handful of PR-mandated, 10-minute speaking engagements--nor a large financial donation made as part of a plea bargain--show any particular depth of character. Courage is personally ensuring - without the promise of fame and fortune in the balance - that those around you live free of terror and harm.
HSUS says that "[Vick's] story is the strongest possible example of why dog fighting is a dead end." But assigning Vick hero status sends our youth quite the opposite message. Instead, let's honor those who do the right thing from the beginning (LaDainian Tomlinson, Jarrod Cooper, Tony Gonzalez).
Let's teach our kids that avoiding violence from the beginning is what deserves real recognition. Attempting to redeem yourself after years of inflicting terrible torture does not take courage - it's one's only choice.
Ultimately, I hope that Vick does make good on his word to help more dogs than he's harmed. My intent is not to stop him from him doing that - rather, it is simply to raise the bar. Our heroes must behave heroically in order to be deemed courageous. Showing up is not enough.
Despite an international ban, the trade in endangered animals to the Middle East is flourishing. This exclusive report tracks the dealers, buyers and government officials who protect them.
In January 2005, a crate containing six baby chimpanzees and four monkeys was rescued from a flight from Cairo. The animals had been denied food and water for days and one soon died. Scouring flight records, animal investigators linked the shipment to a notorious wildlife smuggler. It's believed this smuggler traffics an average of 40 chimpanzees a year, bribing airport officials. Despite a wealth of evidence against her, she has never been prosecuted.

According to tax documents posted by The Smoking Gun, Wyclef Jean has used Yele for his own gain.
All over Facebook, Twitter, television newscasts, and radio broadcasts, reporters and ordinary folks have been encouraging relatives, friends and anyone who cares to donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake fund, the humanitarian relief effort spearheaded by the non-profit organization founded by Haitian-American entertainer and part-time Miami resident Wyclef Jean.
According to media reports, Yele is on pace to collect more than $1 million a day.
Yesterday, The Smoking Gun posted Yele's tax returns for 2005, 2006, and 2007 which show the foundation paid $31,200 in rent to a recording studio owned by Jean and a Yele board member, who together "own a controlling interest" in a company that was paid $250,000 by the foundation for "pre-purchased...TV airtime and production services." In 2006, Yele paid it's founder $100,000, which the tax return stated was below market value, for a musical performance at a benefit concert.

The Big Picture:
Follow the money and you will see the thievery plain as you now see the suffering of the people of Haiti. Shamefully, this trail includes the United States. BILLIONS of dollars has been given to Haiti by the US government... BILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR WHAT?
Without question, one would assume that funding would be directed toward improving the BASIC living standards of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere... right?
WRONG. The money went to corrupt officials and NOT TO THE PEOPLE WHO NEEDED IT!
I hope that I am wrong about Wyclef Jean and that he clears his name (and that of his charity) because as it appears, Yele does not look like a good charitable cause. It appears to have paid out all receipts to Wyclef Jean-related 'entities'.

The white-haired prof talks state-of-the-robot-nation — discussing the most impressive robots currently clanking about on two-legs (hello Asimo) and who's doing the most interesting things in UK robotics research (something involving crickets apparently). He also voices concerns about military use of robots — suggesting it won't be long before armies are sending out fully autonomous killing machines.
