US Refuses Karzai’s Latest Plea to End Deadly Night Raids Obama Has More Than Tripled Since Taking Office

The U.S. and NATO have refused to put an end to night raids on Afghan homes, despite repeated objections and pleas from Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Night raids have become the top issue among many Afghans, exemplifying for them the grievances they have living under military occupation. Karzai has repeatedly asked they be put to an end, only to be met with staunch refusals by the U.S. and NATO.

Obama has more than tripled the incidence of night raids, which very often kill civilians, and which a study from back in September found fuel resentment and undermine the mission in Afghanistan.

“An estimated 12 to 20 night raids now occur per night,” according to the report, “resulting in thousands of detentions per year, many of whom are non-combatants.” And many of the associated tactics, like “mass detention operations, holding entire villages for questioning on site for prolonged periods of time,” may violate international law, the report found.

Civilians bear the brunt of these hardline tactics. As one man from Nangarhar, interviewed in the report said, “They claim to be against terrorists, but what they are doing is terrorism. It spreads terror. It creates more violence.”

According to senior commanders in the Joint Special Operations Command, these various nightly raids get the wrong person 50 percent of the time. For a war-torn population living through a decade of US military occupation, ninety-two percent of whom have never even heard of 9/11, these are counterproductive indeed.

NATO spokesman Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, on the other hand, told the media that raids are safe, account for less than 1 percent of civilian casualties and in 85 percent of cases no shots are fired.

But recent history reveals Jacobson’s characterization should be met with skepticism. A July United Nations report which claimed that only 30 civilians died in raids during the first six months of 2011 included only a very small fraction of night raids in which civilians were killed, according to officials of the independent Afghan commission that co-produced the report.

According to official statistics later released by the U.S. and NATO, well over 1,500 civilians were killed in night raids in less than 10 months in 2010 and early 2011. That would make night raids among the most deadly of all military operations in Afghanistan.

Is "Faces of the Unemployed" a site worth launching?

Unfortunately, I am one of the 14 million unemployed people in this country so I can only pitch this concept rather than single handily host the site. I will try to dodge the tl;dr barrier and give a basic break down of the site I believe may help get people back to work. Despite what business owners claim, bad PR can flatline their sales faster than “uncertainity”. So what would the “Faces of The Unemployed” website consist of:

1) An overview map of the US showing the breakdown of the number of unemployed people in each state. The overview numbers could be categorized by a variety of factors such as age, ethnicity, gender, etc. The reason for the breakdown would be to attempt to highlight employment discrimination in different states
2) If a state is clicked on, the map would zoom in and break down the unemployment numbers for the states. Colors would represent different groups. Again highlighting discrimination
3) Both the national and state maps would include an option to filter by the former employer of the unemployed individuals. The former employer data would be used to highlight companies that have recently had massive layoffs or have outsourced a significant number of jobs. Each company would be provided with a profile page which would detail executive pay, annual US revenue, annual foreign revenue, number of US jobs lost, forgein jobs added, and any press releases tied to layoffs. The company details would essentially place each business's employment practices in the spotlight and will prove once and for all whether or not “uncertainity” and not greed is the motivating factor for leaving so many people unemployed
4) Once a state is zoomed in on, a person will see a limited number of personal profiles for the unemployed. One can then click on a city and see a full collage of all the invididuals in that city who are seeking work. The unemployed would each be provided with personal profiles
5) The personal profiles would include a section to add a resume, add pictures of the person and/or his/her family, an explanation of why they are unemployed, and a detailed story about how unemployment is affecting their lives. For now, the government and politicians are merely talking about the federal deficiet, the “uncertainity” in the economy, whether or not to tax the rich more, the 9.1% unemployment figure, etc. They are merely throwing around faceless numbers while making meaningless moves to hopefully save their jobs. The unemployed deserve to have a voice and I believe the profiles will show the human side of all the petty political games and decietful business practices that are the source of 14 million parents, teachers, police officers, college grads, high school kids, seniors(who deserve to retire but can't because the banks destroyed their 401ks), etc. being unable to find work
6) An additional searchable category for college grads would be included. The category would list the majors, attended colleges, and the amount of debt that each student currently has. This category would emphasize the drastic impact that the rising cost of college and the inability to find a job has had on new college grads. Cause when you think about it, the only way that one can supposedly get out of poverty is through higher education. That hasn't worked out very well for most people

That should cover the basics of the site. Again if tl;dr....the main point of the site is to put a human face to the 14 million people who are currently unemployed in this country. For those who are lucky enough to have a job, it is easy to ignore the news and shrug off random numbers and the bickering between politicians. I hope it would be much harder for people to ignore the personal stories of individuals like one woman I read about who is a single mother, who received her masters degree, but remains unemployed. Or the multiple people who have sent out hundreds of resumes and filled out hundreds of applications without getting a response. This site would be intended to show those who claim the unemployed are lazy or stupid or looking for a handout, that they are in reality, your fellow Americans who were merely dealt a bad hand courtesy of the politicians and businessmen you continue to defend. Any thoughts or suggestions on making this concept a reality will be greatly appreciated....Unfortunately, I am one of the 14 million unemployed people in this country so I can... more
