Do Obama and Geithner Have the Same Flaw: Accommodation Instead of Moral Action?

Tim Geithner has a long history of caving to moral pressures and smoothing over colossal failures. But his personality is much like Obama. Maybe that's how he keeps his job.

A lot of us have been wondering, despondently, why the Hell Barack Obama is keeping Timothy Geithner on the job as Treasury Secretary, given his central role in the plunder of trillions of dollars from American taxpayers, and his record of subverting democracy in the service of Wall Street billionaires. Geithner's the guy that drove the getaway car in the heist -- so why was he hired to run the Treasury? You'd expect to see a guy as corrupt as Geithner serving as the Finance Minister in some Central Asian autocracy -- but not in Barack Obama's government, not after all he promised in the campaign.

Maybe a better question is: Why did Obama choose Geithner in the first place? On the surface, those two are supposed to be on relatively opposite ends of the American spectrum: Geithner is an East Coast Republican blue-blood whose catastrophic tenure at the New York Fed represented everything Obama -- a half-Kenyan liberal Democrat from America's western-most state -- promised to change for the better.

The most recent hope-crushing revelation about Geithner -- emails showing that the New York Fed under Geithner's watch forced AIG to lie to the public in order cover up tens of billions of taxpayer dollars that were being funneled through AIG and out the backdoor to top financial institutions like Goldman Sachs -- proves once and for all that Geithner is the worst choice imaginable for the job. He's the epitome of the sort of incompetence, sleaze and corruption that Bush specialized in -- so why did Obama name him, and why is he sticking by him?

So far the most convincing rational explanation I've read comes from William Black, the former Savings & Loan investigator-hero who understands public-private corruption in this country like few others. Prof. Black, like a true prosecutor, puts Geithner's rise to head the Treasury in simple crime-world terms: he's there to cover up his own heist. All across the board, as Black has pointed out, the same perps who caused the collapse of the financial system and the looting of all those trillions are all in positions of power to cover up their crimes, and keep the details out of the public eye.

But there are also other, deeper, personal reasons too. I came across some rather disturbing biographical similarities between Obama and Geithner that show why Obama might be more comfortable with a guy like Geithner on a deeper, mammalian level.

Even though Geithner and Obama come from such different backgrounds and from different political parties, both have strikingly similar temperaments -- both earned reputations as conciliators and centrists in campus debates at their respective Ivy League schools, over the very same hot-button issue: affirmative action.

CineAsia, Miami Music Festival, Florida Entertainment Summit, Bahamas International Film Festival, Songfood Retreat, Highlight December Media and Entertainment Industry Networking Events

River to River. Florence Indian Film Festival, is a festival entirely devoted to films from and about India and the south Asian region, including, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, running through December 10 in Florence. The International Film Festival Summit (IFFS) is an annual conference and trade show for professionals in the film festival industry, and is organized by the International Film Festival Summit (IFFS), an international organization representing the film festival industry. The festival goes through December 8 in Las Vegas. The Ravel Orchestral Study Group Los Angeles will hold its second open study session December 8 in Studio City. The workshop is open to anyone and has no requirements, and is lead and organized by ASCAP Film/TV composer Ron Jones. An international convention dedicated to the Asian cinema exhibition and distribution community, CineAsia, screens major Asian and Hollywood films, presents award ceremonies, and an educational program on issues affecting the Asian cinema exhibition industry, when it happens December 8-10 in Hong Kong.

"Mix & Mingle" in Atlanta with the Women in Film and Television Atlanta Holiday Party on December 9, which in part will support the Atlanta Children’s Shelter Holiday House 2009. BMI will co-produce the First Annual Miami Music Festival in the Brickell area of downtown Miami. This event showcasing artists performing all genres of music is presented by Tune Partners, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Miami.com and city and county government departments. The Fifth Annual Florida Entertainment Summit happening December 10-12 nearby will share music workshops and showcases in association with Miami Music Festival, in addition to its SoundLab session where recording artists and producers can present their musical works before an assembled audience of industry professionals. But FES will kick off with a special party on December 9. During this year's Bahamas International Film Festival, December 10-17 in Nassau, Johnny Depp will be honored with the Career Achievement Award, Director of Photography, Gavin McKinney, will be honored with the first Bahamian Tribute Award, and Academy Award nominee, Sophie Okonedo, will be on hand for The Rising Star Tribute which is given to an actor whose early accomplishments have put them on the path for elite stardom in the industry.

A one-day, intensive workshop for actors who want to learn simple and effective techniques, facts, and tips that will get them the parts they want, will be conducted in New York, December 12 by a film producer, offering the perspective of a film producer. BMI, known for it's music industry networking initiatives, hosts an “Acoustic Sunset Pool Party”, December 12, with performances by Alexander, Alex Cuba, DC3, Mirror Pal, at an art deco hotel on the oceanfront of Miami’s South beach. While in Maitland, join Central Florida's media and entertainment associations for holiday "Mingling", networking and fun, hosted annually by: Women in Film & Television-Florida, and co-hosted by: Digital Media Alliance Florida (DMAF) and the Florida Cast and Crew Association (FCCA) Advance. Songfood presents a songwriting intensive, December 26 through January 2, covering daily classes, discussions with instructors leading the intensives; nightly open mic for the class to share songs with each other; yoga classes; and a unique physical environment at 5000 feet above sea level at the session's location in Alajuela.

Race in America: 'Progressive' cities

The 'progressive' towns constantly listed as our best role models also lack racial diversity, finds Aaron Renn. Why has no one called them on it?

Among the media and academia and within planning circles, there's a generally standing answer to the question of what cities are the best, the most progressive and best role models for small and midsize cities. The standard list includes Portland, Seattle, Austin, Minneapolis and Denver.

In particular, Portland is held up as a paradigm, with its urban growth boundary, extensive transit system, excellent cycling culture and a pro-density policy. These cities are frequently contrasted with those of the Rust Belt and South, which are found wanting, often even by locals, as "cool" urban places.

But look closely at these exemplars, and a curious fact emerges. If you take away the dominant Tier One cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles – places no one expects the average U.S. city to be able to imitate – you will find that the "progressive" cities aren't red or blue, but another color entirely: white.

In fact, not one of these "progressive" cities even reaches the national average for percentage of African-Americans in its core county. Perhaps not progressiveness but whiteness is the defining characteristic of the group.

The progressive paragon of Portland is the whitest on the list, with an African-American population less than half the national average. It is America's ultimate White City. The contrast with other, supposedly less advanced cities is stark.

It is not just a regional thing, either. Even look just within the state of Texas, where Austin is held up as a bastion of right thinking urbanism next to sprawlvilles like Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston.

While Austin is far more diverse than a place like Portland, it is still much whiter than other major Texas cities, comparable only to Fort Worth. And while its African-American population lags the national average, Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston both exceed it.

This raises troubling questions about these cities.
