Ah, the Irish and the Irish-blooded will be drinking their Guinesses, and Kilkennies and whiskeys deep this night as they sing songs of a battles lost, heroes martyred, whiskey plundered, potatoes ungrown, and women’s hearts stolen. Nothing becomes an Irishman more than defeat and hardship. The Irish (and to a degree the Scots and Welsh) remember more the battles they lost than the victors do who won them. This proud tradition carries on in the Scots and Irish descendants in Southern America where old swords still hang above fireplaces and a long ago lost war is vividly remembered.

Facing a Christmas without a new blockbuster gadget to excite shoppers, electronics retailers hope they can make up the difference by selling a greater number of smaller, cheaper items.
(Bustillo, M. & White, B., 2009, September 29, par.1)
As they fight grim forecasts that sales this holiday season will be as bad as last year's, leading electronics sellers Best Buy Co., Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Sears Holdings Corp. and RadioShack Corp. are counting on merchandise such as $300 netbook computers, private-label speakers and electronic-book readers to appeal to customers who have put thrift at the top of the list.
(Bustillo, M. & White, B., 2009, September 29, par.2)
"The frugality trend is still the overriding sentiment out there," said Jin Chang, the Best Buy executive charged with predicting shoppers' mindset. "Consumers are willing to spend money, but they want value."
(Bustillo, M. & White, B., 2009, September 29, par.3)
The weak economy looms large, but two other trends also are working against electronics manufacturers and merchants. The first is that most Americans who lusted for laptops or flat-panel TVs earlier this decade have already bought one, giving retailers the harder job of persuading them to upgrade to a new one or buy additional units.
(Bustillo, M. & White, B., 2009, September 29, par.4)
The second is that this year's new electronics offer largely incremental technology, such as Internet capability in flat-panel TVs. That contrasts with recent Christmas seasons, when fresh devices such as Nintendo Co.'s Wii videogame console and Apple Inc.'s iPhone created a buzz that boosted the entire retail sector.
(Bustillo, M. & White, B., 2009, September 29, par.5)
As a result, industry experts expect companies will try to maintain sales and profits with promotions such as buy-one-get-one-free specials, and by pushing add-ons such as installation services and home network devices that help electronic components talk to one another.
(Bustillo, M. & White, B., 2009, September 29, par.6)
Wal-Mart believes shoppers will eagerly embrace lower-priced electronics such as videogame consoles now that Sony Corp., Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo have each cut system prices in recent weeks. But it will take a lot of $300 gadget sales to make up for fewer sales of pricey HDTVs, and not everyone thinks that is going to happen. Consultancy Retail Forward last week forecast that holiday sales, including electronics, would be the second worst in 42 years.
(Bustillo, M. & White, B., 2009, September 29, par.8)

I always wanted to "see the light." To unearth the secret of piety and understand religion. But no matter how hard I've tried and closed my eyes to see God, when I open them again nothing is different. Someone once said to me, "God's light shines on you." Oh, if it were only true. I'd love to feel the warmth if it were so. But so often I feel cold and alone. These are not my eyes in the photo--but another young woman's. Maybe she is looking into the light of God. I hope so. I wish I could see this magic so many people believe.

September 19th has geeks around the world celebrating International Talk Like A Pirate Day. The event has been celebrated for about the last decade and even has its own web site and its own Facebook fan site with nearly 7,000 fans.
The event was created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers in Oregon, USA. Columnist Dave Barry brought more attention on it when he 'gave it a nod' in 2002.
In the UK today, pirate events are being held around the country including a CAMRA Pirate Pub Crawl in Nottinghamshire and a 50p rum drinks promotion at a pub in London (anyone know which pub that is??).
If you'd like to get into the spirit of things, here's a list of some proper pirate vocabulary:
Avast! — Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, “Whoa! Get a load of that!”
Beauty — The best possible pirate address for a woman. Always preceded by “me,” as in, “C’mere, me beauty,” or even, “me buxom beauty,” to one particularly well endowed.
Grog — An alcoholic drink, usually rum diluted with water, but in this context you could use it to refer to any alcoholic beverage other than beer
Smartly — Do something quickly.September 19th has geeks around the world celebrating International Talk Like A Pirate... more
