The Ella Baker Center along with other community workers in the Oakland area have come up with five key points to fix our budget in California. They know that the old way of doing things in California is not working so they are working on providing real Solutions. The fact is that if you are poor or are a member of certain ethnic groups the chance of you going to jail is very likely. We have seen an influx in our prison population without rehabilitation. Creating huge profits for a few but with destruction to most of our communities. Real reform is needed and at least they are providing some Solutions to our problem. We have to move away from fear and work together to provide real solutions.

Solution #1: Replace the Death Penalty with Permanent Imprisonment
Converting death sentences to permanent imprisonment will ensure that we keep our communities safe without wasting critical resources. Experience has shown that permanent imprisonment works -- at a fraction of the cost. Five Year Savings: $1 billion

Solution #2: Close Division of Juvenile Justice Youth Prisons
California taxpayers currently pay $380 million each year to keep 1,624 young people locked up in youth prisons. Instead, youth should be sent to local facilities where they have access to effective treatment programs for the entire family. Five Year Savings: $1 billion

Solution #3: Keep the Response to Petty Drug Possession Local
We currently house 24,000 people in state prison for drug possession, at a cost of $1 billion a year. Instead, we should shift our response to non-violent drug crimes to the local level and provide effective drug treatment. Five Year Savings: $5 billion

Solution #4: Fix the Three Strikes Law
If we reform the Three Strikes Law to require that the most recent felony be a violent offense -- like every other state in the country -- we would save $1 billion that we now waste housing people in prison as a result of non-violent offenses. Five Year Savings: $5 billion

As our lawmakers return from their summer recess, the time is now to demand smart solutions to California's budget crisis. I hope to see you on Tuesday. Currently based out of Chicago, 25-year old Matthew Santos has established himself as one of the rare and striking voices quickly emerging from the Windy City's music scene. With a growing fan base hailing him for his ethereal voice, Santos has secured his place in music with his distinguished style and unique musical gift.

Native to Minneapolis, Santos discovered his passion for music at age six when he started playing piano and his inspiration for playing guitar began by the age of fifteen. At first Santos pursued the visual arts, but decided to dedicate his life solely to music and relocated to Chicago in 2001 to study music composition at Columbia College Chicago. He released his first independently produced album Change is Better in 2004 and EP As a Crow Flies in 2006. In November of 2007, Santos released an acoustic album Matters of the Bittersweet under Candy-Rat Records, with intimate video recordings available on YouTube. "The acoustic, folk-pop fare is a far cry stylistically from what Santos contributed to many tracks on Fiasco's latest album, "The Cool." However, the soulful underpinnings of his voice are what remain consistent, containing a versatility suitable for his singer/songwriter stylings as well as R&B." - Billboard Magazine

Santos' vocals are featured on multiple tracks on the Gold Record "The Cool" accompanying Grammy Award winner hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco. Their collaboration is best known on the successful chart climbing single "Superstar." Santos signed to Fiasco's 1st and 15th label under Atlantic Records in the fall of 2007.

This past year Santos joined Fiasco on his world tour, including appearances on MTV's TRL and Spring Break, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Late Show with Craig Ferguson and a debut talk show performance on David Letterman's first live show after the 2007 Writer's Guild of America Strike. They opened the 2007 mtvU Woodie Awards and performed on MTV's 2008 VMAs. While touring, Santos performed in the largest music venues and festivals in the world including Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapalooza and South by Southwest music conference. This past spring Santos and Fiasco opened Kanye West's international Glow in the Dark Tour.

In addition to performing with Lupe Fiasco, Santos is playing solo shows and headlining concerts with his full band featuring Aviva Jaye (vocals, keyboard), Robert Tucker (drums), Graham Burris (bass) and Matthew Nelson (keyboard). They were recently featured in the Chicago Sun-Times as one of the top ten bands in Chicago. Beyond touring, Santos and his band are currently recording and developing material for their forthcoming album.

It's a belief in something bigger than himself and his musical vision that motivates Santos as a singer-songwriter.
