Oregon is on the brink of ending the legal protection for parents who rely on faith healing instead of seeking medical care for their children.
On a 25-5 vote, the state Senate on Monday joined the House in passing a measure that was sparked by the heavily publicized deaths of children whose families belong to an Oregon City church, the Followers of Christ.
Under current law, spiritual treatment can be used as a defense against some charges. The bill would eliminate those defenses and parents choosing faith healing over medical treatment for a child who dies could face tough mandatory sentences.

My Faith: How I learned to stop 'praying away the gay'
Editor's Note: Don Lemon is a CNN anchor and author of Transparent, a memoir .
By Don Lemon, Special to CNN
"School day, time to get up, sleepy head. School day."
Although she's been gone since 1998, my grandmother's words ring in my head just about every morning of my life. That's how MaMe, as I called her, got me out of bed and off to my Catholic school when I was growing up and in her care.
But before I shuffled my way to the bathroom to begin my morning routine, I had to hit the floor on my knees to pray, just as I had the night before.
It was usually The Lord's Prayer ("Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name...") followed by asking God to watch and guide me through my day until I returned to the safety of my home that evening.
But MaMe (pronounced MAH-me) didn't know that at a very early age her favorite grandson had begun to pray, silently, that God would change him from being different, from having crushes on boys, from being more curious about boys than girls.
By age four or five, I was too young to sexualize my infatuations but I knew that everyone else, including my family and friends, would think it was wrong.
Perhaps it was the conversations I overheard from adults around my hometown of Port Allen, Louisiana, who'd mimic gay people, calling them "funny" or "sissy" or "fagots."
Perhaps it was Sunday mornings at our Baptist church, where preachers taught that liking someone of the same sex was a direct and swift path to hell. And that if that person would just turn to the Lord and confess his sin, then God would change him back into the person He wanted him to be - a person who only had crushes on the opposite sex.
All of which meant that, from a very early age, I began to think I was dirty and that I was going to hell. Can you imagine what that feels like for a kid who was just learning to read and perform basic arithmetic? It was awful.
And talk about guilt - I was a Baptist attending Catholic school!
I prayed the silent prayer for God to change me every chance I got until I started attending college in New York. That's when common sense began to take hold and I realized that no amount of prayer would change me into something that wasn't natural to me.
With my religious upbringing, I'd had the opportunity to study religious doctrine. But I learned from different perspectives, from Catholic Mass on Fridays to Baptist services on Sundays to vacation Bible school in the summer to Bible study with a Jehovah's Witness as a teenager.
As I got older I began to realize that all these people and institutions interpreted the Bible somewhat differently. I had a sort of epiphany: the Bible was about the lessons you learned, not about the events or words.
When I became old enough, intelligent enough and logical enough to discern the difference between metaphor and reality, everything changed. I realized that Jonah living in the belly of a whale was a parable written in the same vein as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. saying that he had "been to the mountaintop."
Neither Jonah nor King had actually been to those places. They were metaphors for lessons for those of us who cared to absorb them.
So many of us, especially in the black community and in churches, tend to think that religious teachings happened word for word as they were written in Scripture. I think that's naïve, even dangerous.
That type of thinking - or non-thinking - keeps many religious people enslaved to beliefs that they haven't truly stepped back from and examined.
That type of thinking causes people who are otherwise good to shun and ostracize young gay people.
It causes people to want to control and change people who aren't like them. And who wants to be like someone else?
Imagine if we had allowed Christian doctrines and teachings that supported slavery, segregation and the subjugation of women to pervade our society all the way up until the current moment. What kind of world would that be?
Instead, we got on our knees, just as I did as a little boy, and prayed that slavery, segregation and the subjugation of women would end. In the United States, at least, those prayers have largely been realized.
I'm no longer the member of any church but I do believe in a higher power.
It's time for us, especially black people, to stop trying to pray the gay away and to get on our knees and start praying that the discrimination of gay people ends.
What we're doing to our young gay people now is child abuse. It's plain old bigotry and hatred. And if African-Americans don't know what that feels like in America, I don't know who does.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Don Lemon.http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/05/22/my-faith-how-i-learned-to-stop-praying-away-th... more

Ruth B. Shrader, 50-year-old elementary teacher and associate pastor from Memphis, Tennessee has been arrested and faces a statutory rape charge.
Memphis police arrested Shrader on last Tuesday, accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage boy. In a court affidavit, sex crimes investigators contend that for two years beginning when the boy was 15, Shrader had consensual sex with the teenager. The relationship started when she gave him massages. She provided gifts and money and sent sexually-oriented text messages, according to the court document.
Police say they have evidence in the form of text messages Shrader exchanged with the boy.
Wednesday, a Memphis City Schools spokesperson said Shrader is a teacher at A.B. Hill Elementary School, but the victim is not a student. The authority that Shrader allegedly wielded involved roles as a godmother and the former acting assistant pastor of a church, according to the affidavit.

Chrissy Ann Dunn, 30-year-old woman from Corning,California, has pleaded pleaded guilty in accordance with a plea agreement to lewd act upon a child and oral copulation of a person under 16. Per the agreement, multiple other counts were dismissed.
Dunn was facing the charges of unlawful sexual intercourse, 20 counts; oral copulation of a person under 16, 10 counts; lewd act upon a child, 20 counts. She was arrested on a warrant last November and booked into the Tehama County Jail with bail set at $30,000.
The investigation of the case began when the boy's mother made a report of the abuse to the Corning Police Department. That case was dismissed at request of the Tehama County District Attorney's Office in the end of November.
"I am really upset my name has been ruined by that kid," Dunn stated at the time and added that she believes the boy lied because he had feelings for her which she did not reciprocate.
Tehama County District Attorney's Office refiled the case and Dunn was arrested again. She will be sentenced on June 21

As hard as the above video is to believe, the same thing happened to Infowars.com employee Michelle, her 8 year old and newborn. This whole TSA revolt started back in November of last year when DrudgeReport.com picked up Michelle’s account. Their coverage prompted others to share stories of abuse at the hands of TSA. This stuff really happens.
If you feel this acceptable and don't get even the slightest bit upset.... you have a problem.

What do Ashton Kutcher, Sean Penn, Justin Timberlake, the Old Spice man, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx all have in common? Big egos? Hot girlfriends? Well yes, but according to Demi Moore, Ariana Huffington and Eva Longoria they are REAL MEN because they don't buy girls for sex. Hmmm, the irony about this is too obvious to point out. Anyway. Am sure these guys have never used their money to actually pay for sex so instead they have agreed to all take part in Demi and Ashton's new charity campaign which is trying to raise awareness for child sex trafficking. The idea is good, I mean no one likes perverts who rape kids for kicks, and kudos to Kutcher and Moore for doing something about it. But unfortunately I can't help thinking that the faux macho situations these famous blokes are lending their faces and names to makes them look a bit dated and silly. I mean, we all know that Kutcher is a modern man who is all into eco stuff - would he really consider "doing the laundry" as chucking away a pair of socks and ripping open a new pack?Questionable. Have a look at the ads and make your own minds up. Oh and if you feel compelled to make a video yourself you can by heading to DNA's Facebook page.

Two French vegans are on trial after their 11-month-old baby daughter died from vitamin deficiency as she was only being fed breast milk. Sergipe and Joel Le Moaligou who are strict vegans called the emergency services in March 2008 after their baby Louise started sweating profusely and crying, and appeared to have no energy.By the time the ambulance arrived at their home north of Paris, she was already dead.Baby Louise weighed a mere 12lb, compared to an average 17.5lb for a child her age, and was deathly pale according to French media. An autopsy showed that she was suffering from a vitamin A and B12 deficiency, which experts say increases a child's sensitivity to infections.French prosecutors claim the vitamin deficiency may have been linked to the mother's diet, and also say that the couple failed to follow medical advice to hospitalise the baby who was suffering from bronchitis. The parents, who also have a 13-year-old daughter who didn't suffer from any vitamin deficiencies, became vegan after seeing "a television programme about how cattle were taken to abattoirs," said the mother's lawyer. The parents are still vegan and "are completely aware of the mistake they made," said the father's lawyer.
If convicted, the couple could face up to 30 years in prison.

It's not clear whether Valery Podsobinski, a 45-year-old mom from Talent, Ore., allegedly fed her children pot-laced snacks then beat them with household objects, or the other way around. Actually, it doesn't really matter. If police are right and she did either of those things, then she's unlikely to be seeing her kids any time soon.
The Oregonian reports that Podsobinski was indicted last week on charges of applying a controlled substance to a minor; felony possession of marijuana; felony possession of psilocybin mushrooms; two counts of felony assault in the fourth degree; two counts of misdemeanor assault in the fourth degree; and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.
Psilocybin mushrooms, you say? Indeed, when she was arrested she apparently had a big bag of shrooms on her.
As for the child abuse, police say she had been abusing her kids for months before she was arrested, slipping pot-infused food into their meals and later abusing them.
Her weapons of choice for beating her kids supposedly included belts, wooden spoons, paddles, and spatulas.
We've definitely heard of parents being booked for hitting their kids with all kinds of objects (in fact, sometimes they have the kids so well trained that they hit themselves) but getting them high first is a new one. It's not clear whether Valery Podsobinski, a 45-year-old mom from Talent, Ore.,... more

A 'mother' (of 4) sexually abuses her 2 year old baby on a live web stream (4 separate times!) & is only sentenced to 15 years & 20 years to be served CONCURRENTLY?!
Sorry but I think this sentence is just too lenient & the laws need to be changed! Sick people like this should never walk free again (if they should ever walk at all).
Thankfully her 4 children are now out of her care but who knows what kind of horrors they have endured & whether they will heal.
I hope there are decent & sane relatives who can take them in & provide a loving home for them. Poor children. :(

LIKE other eight-year-old girls, Britney Campbell loves dancing to Lady GaGa, is fond of fashion and enjoys putting on make-up.
But Britney's beauty regime goes way beyond playing with Mummy's lippy.
Once every three months, Britney climbs on a beautician's table and watches as mum Kerry prepares needles of Botox and fillers to be injected into her face.
Beautician Kerry, 34, from Birmingham, buys the substances online and injects them into her daughter's forehead, lips and around her eyes.
The beauty-pageant obsessed single mum also takes her to have her body waxed, in a bizarre bid to stop her growing hair when she eventually hits puberty.
Kerry says these shocking and potentially dangerous treatments will guarantee Britney becomes famous as a teenager.

A woman who sexually abused her own toddler daughter while streaming it live over the Internet was sentenced yesterday to 15 years in prison. "I never meant to hurt anyone in my family, and I have regretted it ever since," said Maine mom Julie Carr, 33. She was convicted of performing oral sex on her daughter on four occasions while streaming it to a teenager in Britain she had met on an Internet dating site, reports CNN.
Carr was convicted of producing child pornography, and gross sexual assault and exploitation of a minor. "When I see child-pornography, I ask myself: Where are the parents? Where are the people who are supposed to be protecting the child?'" said US District Judge John Woodcock. "Well, Ms. Carr, in your case, we know where the mother was."

(CNN) -- An estranged son of anti-gay Kansas pastor Fred Phelps said Wednesday that the spiritual leader of Westboro Baptist Church hit his wife and beat his children with a mattock handle until they bled.
"I think what he does out there is evil," said Nathan "Nate" Phelps, during an appearance on HLN's "Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell."
Nate Phelps is the seventh of the Westboro Baptist minister's 12 children. The younger Phelps severed ties with his family on his 18th birthday and said he hasn't had contact with his father in three decades. Nate Phelps is currently writing a book about his family.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that Westboro's practice of picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers with offensive placards is constitutionally protected free speech. The picketing, which includes chants and placards stating "God Hates Fags" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers," have enraged supporters of the U.S. military and the families and friends of slain soldiers.
Nate Phelps called his pastor father "one of the best reasons that America has been forced to get off the fence and address this issue (of gay rights)."
"But at the same time you can't ignore the fact that he's done a lot of damage," Phelps said. "He's hurt a lot of families, not only in the gay community, but the families of these soldiers."
The younger Phelps said his father also hurt his own family.
"He used his fists. He used his knees and he used ... the handle of a mattock," said Phelps, referring to a pick-like digging tool. "He used that in such a way that it split the skin on the back of the kid's legs so they bled."
"If they want to call that discipline, that's fine. But I call it abuse," Phelps said.
The son said Fred Phelps also hit his mother, but not with the handle of the mattock.
Phelps has also said his father abused prescription drugs when he was in law school. He didn't back down from the claim during the HLN interview.
Velez-Mitchell read a statement from Nate Phelps' sister, Shirley Phelps-Roper, denying the claim.
"Yikes. Hell no. His (Nate Phelps') imagination goes on and on," Roper wrote "This lie should not have come out of his mouth when he decided to reject the word of God. Nothing he can say will change the fact that God hates (homosexuals) and their enablers and therefore God hates America and America is doomed."
Nate Phelps responded that his sister "just cynically lies about what happened."
Likewise, Phelps said his father manipulates facts and circumstances to reach false conclusions.
"My father can make any connection to anything that anyone has done or hasn't done in their life and point to that to say that that's evidence they're damned and going to hell," Phelps said. "He's convinced that homosexuality is the ultimate sin against God.
"So since the United States is taking steps to move in the direction of equality for gays in America, he says that has doomed America," Phelps said. "So anyone who is connected to America, so anyone who is supporting America in any sense is subject to the wrath of God."
When asked what he would say to his father if he could, Nate Phelps replied, "I've never had a relationship with my father. I wouldn't know what to say to him."
There was no immediate public response from Fred Phelps to his son's televised remarks.

CLEVELAND, Texas — This old timber town of almost 8,000 in East Texas has become a tinderbox that some residents fear could be ignited by charges of racism, political chicanery and child rape.
Even before the alleged gang rape of an 11-year-old girl divided Cleveland, tensions were simmering.
Accusations of racism had been flying over the looming recall election of three black City Council members. Those targeted for removal have expressed concerns the election could be racially motivated, while their opponents accuse them of mismanagement and squandering tax dollars.
Meanwhile, Houston community activist Quanell X rolled into town Thursday evening and held a rally questioning the investigation resulting in 18 black men and boys being charged with sexually assaulting the 11-year-old Hispanic girl.
Quanell spoke before a standing-room-only crowd in a community building he rented after a predominantly minority church withdrew an invitation and law enforcement officials advised him to cancel because of “racial unrest between black and Hispanic groups.”

ARVADA, Colo. -- Arvada Police are defending the way they handled the arrest of an 11-year-old boy. The Arvada boy was arrested and hauled away in handcuffs from his home for drawing stick figures in school - something his therapist told him to do.
His parents say they understand what he did was inappropriate, but are outraged by the way Arvada Police handled the case. The parents did not want their real names used.
They say "Tim" is being treated for Attention Deficit Disorder and his therapist told him to draw pictures when he got upset, rather than disrupt the class. So that’s what he did.
Last October, he drew stick figures of himself with a gun, pointed at four other stick figures with the words "teachers must die."
The boy drew the pictures to let out angry emotions. "Tim," his parents, and his therapist say it was not a threat and that Tim would never hurt anyone.
He felt calmer and was throwing the picture away when the teacher saw it and sent him to the principal's office.
