Inside the mudslinging and smear tactics of the 2008 race.
Political mudslinging as a campaign tactic is as popular as it's ever been. Romney, Clinton, Huckabee, Giuliani, Obama - no one's managed to steer clear of targeted rumors and malicious gossip. NOW on PBS travels to South Carolina, the home of legendary no-holds-barred campaigner Lee Atwater, to see where negative stories come from, how they spread, and whether they can be effectively defeated with positive messaging.
"In South Carolina, we know how to run negative campaigns," Rod Shealy, a veteran campaign strategist who was convicted for violating campaign laws, tells NOW. "Your challenge as a campaign is to damage your opponent without getting caught doing it."

Now that stephen colbert has officially been rejected for the south carolina ballot, it's tme to look back on it. A LOT of people have given him extreme criticisms for what he did, saying he was ruining politics and the election process. A lot of people in the democratic party scorned him for possibly being able to upset democratic politics in Carolina. This is ridiculous. Stephen Colbert's short dream of running for president did something no other potential candidate has ever done: getting people who have never and will never have anything to do with politics interested, and getting more college students interested. Most of the candidates today do not have much of a voice in terms of college students and people that don't care about politics in general. Stephen Colbert was that voice. I personally care a great deal about politics and am actively engaged in them. But a lot of people aren't. And they weren't until Stephen Colbert showed up. Stephen would not have won. We all know that. But, he would've broadened the spectrum of people interested in politics. Shame on you, democrats. Now that stephen colbert has officially been rejected for the south carolina ballot,... more

"South Carolina Democrats squashed Stephen Colbert's fanciful White House bid on Thursday.
Colbert, who poses as a conservative talk-show host on the Comedy Central cable network, filed to get on the ballot as a Democratic candidate in his native South Carolina. His campaign paid a $2,500 filing fee just before the noon deadline, said state Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler.
However, after about 40 minutes of discussion by top party officials, the executive council voted 13-3 to keep the host of "The Colbert Report" off the ballot."why they be hating on him yo?

Stephen Colbert's presidential campaign is apparently no joke.
The host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" will file papers late Wednesday or early Thursday to put his name on South Carolina's Democratic primary ballot
The South Carolina native will not file papers as a Republican because the $35,000 required to get on the GOP ballot is apparently too high a threshold.
"They priced us out of range," a source told CNN.
The South Carolina Democratic Party only demands that a candidate pay $2,500 or garner 3,000 signatures to get on the ballot. Stephen Colbert's presidential campaign is apparently no joke.
