A new Violence Against Women Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday evening, with all of South Carolina’s Republican congressmen voting for it, including Dist. 1’s representative, Tim Scott.
This version of VAWA (H.R. 4970) doesn’t live up to its stated purpose, however, says Bobbie Rose, who is Scott’s Democratic opponent in the 2012 election year.
The House version distinctly differs from the one passed last month in the Senate (S. 1925), which removed the obstacles many immigrants regularly encounter when reporting abuse, and extended coverage to the gay, lesbian and transgender community. S. 1925 also addressed the high levels of abuse Native American and Native Alaskan women endure in their communities, expanding their independent prosecution of domestic violence committed in their own jurisdiction.
“Rather than reauthorize a bipartisan act, the House of Representatives chose to make a very partisan statement,” Rose says. “They decided that their female constituents would be best served if a group of GOP sheep determined which woman, which mother, which wife and which daughter should receive protection and aid from our government. They, in their infinite wisdom, determined that immigrant, Native American and LGBT women should be afforded no protections at all!”A new Violence Against Women Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday... more

Only once in the last half-century has South Carolina awarded its electoral votes to a Democratic presidential candidate.
A top Republican advisor is predicting that the Palmetto State could turn blue once again this year, however.
In a recent state-by-state breakdown, Karl Rove listed President Obama to have a three-percent lead in South Carolina over Mitt Romney, the apparent Republican candidate.

Evangelical Saddleback Church founder Rick Warren says that Christians have a disagreement with Mormonism because it “denies” certain fundamental Christian beliefs.
In an Easter Sunday interview on ABC, Jake Tapper noted that Mitt Romney, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was almost certain to be the Republican presidential nominee.
“Are Mormons Christians?” Tapper asked Warren.
“Well, the key sticking point for evangelicals and actually for many is the issue of the Trinity,” the evangelical pastor explained. “Orthodox Christians, Catholic Christians, Protestant Christians, evangelical Christians and Pentecostal Christians all believe in the Trinity; that’s the historic doctrine of the church, that God is three-in-one. Not three gods; one God in Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”
“Mormonism denies that. That’s a sticking point for a lot of Catholic Christians, evangelical Christians, Pentecostal Christians, because they don’t — they don’t believe that.”
“Now they’ll use the same terminology, but they don’t believe in the historic doctrine of the Trinity,” Warren added. “And people have tried to make it other issues. But that’s really one of the fundamental differences.”
Throughout the primary season, Romney has had a problem getting support from evangelicals. He lost the evangelical vote by double digits in Tennessee, Michigan, Iowa, Ohio, Georgia and South Carolina.

A Conversation With: Nikki Haley
By SHIVANI VORA
Nikki Haley is used to attracting more attention than your typical United States governor. At 40, the governor of South Carolina is the youngest in the country, and the first female and minority for South Carolina. The Sikh-born converted Christian is releasing her memoir, “Can’t Is Not an Option” this week.
The book traces her life from when she was Nimrata Nikki Randhawa, a young girl in the rural town of Bamberg, S.C., with her three siblings and parents who are immigrants from Amritsar, India. In the book she chronicles her ascent into politics, starting with her election to the state legislature, and her successful run for governor in 2010, when she was just 38.
There is drama along the way: the discrimination her family dealt with, her religious conversion to her husband Michael Haley’s faith, ex-Gov. Mark Sanford’s unexpected departure to Argentina, and the ugliness surrounding her race for governor. Ms. Haley won in the end, thanks in part to powerful backers including the Tea Party, Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney, whom she went on to endorse for his presidential run.
A year and change into office, Haley is seen as a rising star in the Republican Party, despite wavering support from some members in the Tea Party and criticism over proposed tax breaks for online retailing behemoth Amazon.com.
She lives in the governor’s mansion with her husband, an officer with the South Carolina Army National Guard and their two children Rena, 13, and Nalin, 10, but was in New York City this week to promote the memoir. Over breakfast, she spoke about changing her religion, her future in politics and the problem with Washington today.

On March 23, 2012 Humanist Press became the only publisher in the humanist/freethought/atheist market to offer new titles as ebooks, making the electronic format the main focus of the publisher. The move is part of an overall effort by Humanist Press to enter the rapidly growing ebook market.
Candidate Without a Prayer by atheist activist Herb Silverman will be the first title to be launched by Humanist Press as an ebook. This funny and witty autobiography covers Silverman’s journey from an atheist Jew living in South Carolina to his run for governor in the early ‘90s, despite the state’s constitution forbidding it because he lacked a belief in a “supreme being.”

After serving the first year of his term amid consistent ethics investigations and charges, Ken Ard formally resigned this morning.
Before a grand jury could release any statements on its investigation, which pertained to Ard’s providing false information in a settlement with the State Ethics Commission, the Republican lt. governor stepped down.
In a letter to Gov. Nikki Haley offering “a great apology,” Ard took sole liability for the multiple charges he’s faced.
“During my campaign, it was my responsibility to make sure things were done correctly. I did not do that. There are no excuses nor is there need to share blame. It is my fault that the events of the past year have taken place.”
In March 2011, Ard was charged by the SEC with 92 campaign finance violations, including use of over $24,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses. Included in the items Ard purchased in an eight-week period immediately after the 2010 election were a family vacation, clothing for his wife, a PlayStation, a flat-screen television and an iPod.

Republican hopeful Mitt Romney illustrated again on Friday why voters may find him harder to relate to than any other presidential candidate.
In a speech to the Detroit Economic Club at Ford Field, the former Massachusetts governor awkwardly praised Michigan and bragged about all the vehicles he and his wife owned.
“I actually love this state,” the candidate opined. “This feels good, being back in Michigan. You know, the trees are the right height, the streets are just right. I like the fact that most of the cars I see are Detroit-made automobiles.”
“I drive a Mustang and a Chevy pickup truck. Ann drives a couple of Cadillacs, actually. And I used to have a Dodge truck. So, I used to have all three covered,” he added.
Throughout his campaign, Romney, who is worth around $250 million, has made a series of tone-deaf attempts to relate to average Americans.
In June, he told a group of unemployed people in Florida that he was “also unemployed.”
Returning to Florida in September, the candidate claimed that he was part of the middle class.
Romney told a group of workers at a steel plant in November that federal employees made more than he did. He has also said that he knows “what it’s like to worry whether you’re going to get fired.”
During a January debate in South Carolina, Romney encouraged voters to send him to Washington because he had “lived in the real streets of America.”
Unlike many Americans, the former Bain Capital CEO has the option of living on the “real streets” at his California beachfront mansion, or one of his homes in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

....but he does it for Political Expediency: Read whole blog but here is gist.
Because I do know him, I also know he is not some anti-LGBT nut. He is no Rick Santorum. Frankly, I don’t think Chris Christie has an anti-gay bone in his body, however much I cannot say the same about his impending veto. His veto will be a brutally anti-gay act, pure and simple.
..
He won’t veto the bill because he’s anti-gay. He’ll veto the bill because the 2016 South Carolina Republican Presidential primary electorate is anti-gay. The Charleston Place is suing the Southern Republican Leadership Conference (SRLC), claiming the group booked nearly the entire venue for the weekend of the Republican primary and has since refused to pay its $227,872 bill. Under the terms of the contract, the hotel was to provide rooms, food and beverages, and other services for the group's stay, and payment of all outstanding charges was to be made at the conclusion of the conference.Charleston Place sues Republican conference organizers

I think one can safely say that the GOP primaries have been quite a show, so far. Not necessarily in a good way, but definitely in an entertaining way. Many years ago, during my time as a child and through young adulthood, I was immersed in the (sometimes solitary) lavish joys of nature in rural South Carolina. The memories of the steaming, dusty red clay roads and the smells of downstate piney-woods are now fading away, replaced by years of gritty urban life in Chicago’s inner-city. However, that doesn’t mean that now I’ve become completely blind to the beauty of rural landscapes. I just have to enjoy it from the comfort of a chair, in more climate-controlled conditions. So this video is pretty perfect for me.
“Yosemite HD” is an amazing four-minute time-lapse short art film, a collaboration between Sheldon Neill and Colin Delehanty. They made numerous trips to Yosemite National Park, where they captured the beautiful landscape it offers for visitors every year. Set to “Outro,” from M83′s lovely and stratospheric “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming,” this might be the best music video you could ask for. So stop whatever you’re doing right now, put this video in full-screen mode and breath very deeply during the film’s duration!
This piece includes colorful high-resolution photographs, as well as the exhilarating short film.

Last May, South Carolina enacted new law requiring registered voters to provide a state-issued photo ID in order to cast their ballots.
A review by the U.S. Dept. of Justice, required by the Voting Rights Act, overturned that law in December, however, on basis it would unfairly affect rural, disabled, elderly and minority voters.
The state quickly began its challenge to that overturn, though, claiming the restrictions this Voter ID law imposed were necessary. And as proof, State Atty. Gen. Alan Wilson stated records were found that indicate 900 deceased voters had their votes counted in recent elections.
Today, however, those claims by Wilson and his state Dept. of Motor Vehicles source were found to be rather dead themselves.
At a hearing before the House Election Laws Subcommittee, the State Election Commission revealed only six incidents of dead voter claims provided by the Atty. Gen.’s office. Sinking the argument further, not one of the incidents supported Wilson’s claims, according to data provided by SEC Exec. Director Marci Anderson.
In a press release, SEC offered the following review of those six incidents discussed in testimony this morning:
One was an absentee ballot cast by a voter who then died before election day;
Another was the result of an error by a poll worker who mistakenly marked the voter as Samuel Ferguson, Jr. when the voter was in fact Samuel Ferguson, III;
Two were the result of stray marks on the voter registration list detected by the scanner – again, a clerical error;
The final two were the result of poll managers incorrectly marking the name of the voter in question instead of the voter listed either above or below on the list.
As a result, not one of these six incidents – which were the only ones provided after Wilson claimed record of over 900 – indicates voter fraudulence.

Newt Gingrich's 12-point victory last night in South Carolina capped an extraordinary week in politics that taught us three things: 1) the GOP presidential race isn’t over; 2) Mitt Romney hasn’t closed the deal with conservative voters; and 3) this contest can change in the blink of an eye. Indeed, a week ago, it appeared that Romney was cruising to a win in the Palmetto State, that he was about to go 3-for-3 in the first three contests, and that conservatives and Republicans were beginning to unite around him. But as it turns out, Romney decisively lost South Carolina, he’s now 1-and-2 in the first three contests (after discovering he lost Iowa, too), and conservatives and Republicans -- according to last night’s exit polls -- are nowhere close to rallying around him. And now we move to Florida, where Romney has the ability to bounce back or where Gingrich can further upend this contest.

As the latest polls point to a Newt Gingrich victory in South Carolina, one unique group is hoping their support will keep Mitt Romney in position to become the Republican presidential nominee.
The group “Rich Kids for Romney” released an ad Friday backing the former Massachusetts governor all the way.
“Do we really want a president who isn’t rich?” one of the group’s members asks. “Mitt Romney took down his mansion, and in the same spot, built another mansion. That’s awesome!”
“Newt Gingrich is rich, but not Mitt Romney rich.”
