Last year the Madden NFL franchise finally came into its own. Expectations will always be high for the only football game on consoles but expectations will be even higher for the upcoming Madden NFL 11. The big features that will be appearing in Madden NFL 11 include GameFlow, new running controls, and more online modes including a 6 player co-op. Last week I was able to get my hands on Madden NFL 11 and was able to play an entire game using GameFlow. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to play online co-op but what I saw from playing against another player and CPU has me optimistic for the new Madden but also a little bit worried.Last year the Madden NFL franchise finally came into its own. The Medal of Honor series is one of the most well known franchises in video gaming. This franchise is home to many prestigious awards, world records, and die-hard fans around the world, but this once best selling title for Electronic Arts has fallen on hard times in recent years with under-performing titles across several gaming platforms. Medal of Honor recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and what a better way to celebrate it than to create a new game in the series; Electronic Arts however took it another step further. This is Medal of Honor, reborn, rethought, and redesigned with a new time and war in mind, modern day Afghanistan.
Being a long time fan of the Medal of Honor series it was interesting and somewhat disappointing to see the esteemed series move from its well set roots of World War II to a modern setting, but optimism for something fresh and new was to overwhelming to resist. Over forty individuals primarily composed of American and European community leaders came to EA’s Los Angeles studio to be some of the first outside of the studio and major media outlets to see and play Medal of Honor. The summit began with a bit of disappointment as there was to be zero hands on time with the singleplayer component of the game. Several great presentations flowed through the first day nevertheless, as the lead developers working on the new re-imagined Medal of Honor gave us an in-depth look at the key components of the game. The first of these presentations would be a broad singleplayer story overview, then a look at the artistic values and environmental inspiration, then an in-depth technical explanation of the new animation and artificial intelligence system, then a listen to what we can hear in Medal of Honor’s audio to finish up the first day.The Medal of Honor series is one of the most well known franchises in video gaming.... more

Electronic Arts plans on aggressively taking over the first-person shooter market, and is "not going to be happy" until it has taken leadership back from Activision, describing a complete takeover as "an important strategic priority" of the company for the immediate future.
When asked about the company's expecations for the upcoming Medal of Honor revival, CEO John Riccitello was bullish, saying that "we're not going to be happy until we've taken the leadership back in the first-person shooter category."
"The tip of the spear is the combination of Battlefield: Bad Company and Medal of Honor," said Riccitello. "So we fully expect [Medal of Honor] to be a succesful title this year. We're using a lot of the same technology between the two, the multiplayer game that is part of Medal of Honor this year is in fact built by our DICE Studio, which builds the Battlefield: Bad Company and Battlefield franchises for us. And we think it's a particularly strong title."
"So, we've made great strides with Battlefield: Bad Company, and we expect to make further strides with Medal of Honor, and we have strong plans for years to come. This is an important strategic priority inside of our company, taking market share precisely here."Electronic Arts plans on aggressively taking over the first-person shooter market, and... more

CFD!'s Scott Thompson has commanded and conquered his way through the final chapter of EA's classic RTS franchise. Does Tiberian Twilight close the venerable franchise on a high note? Sadly, it doesn't look that way...
"If reports are to be believed, then after 15 years the Command & Conquer series is coming to an end. With the release of Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, EA has decided to lay one of real-time strategy gaming’s forefathers to rest. Unfortunately for us, Grandpa C&C decided to get a little cosmetic work done for his last outing, and the areas of injection are all too noticeable. After years of proudly delivering its own RTS style, C&C4 has gone and aped the finer elements of games around it, forging some only slightly enjoyable mishmash of a game."

When EA announced that they were bringing back NBA Jam and only on the Wii, like everyone else I was a little skeptical. I was afraid they would try to take the license and create something new that deviated from the classic gameplay. Thankfully as the development team said themselves “if we couldn’t create a game that had the same feeling as the classic NBA Jam, then we wouldn’t have made it at all”. That sums up my experience with NBA Jam on the Wii. The controls are different, but the gameplay brings to mind all the quarters I spent in the mythical places known only as arcades. The team at EA Sports Canada has captured the feel of the classic title like no other game has since the original game released by Midway. When EA announced that they were bringing back NBA Jam and only on the Wii, like... more

My next Vanguard special due out Dec 2, is called Remote Control Warfare. Without giving too much away the premise is simple. As warfare evolves its becoming increasingly sophisticated, and now technology is allowing us to conduct over the horizon warfare in a way we never could before. One of the technologies we look at is the Predator drone. The Predator is becoming an increasingly famous player on the battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But one of the interesting things I found when I was researching this story, with producer Lauren Cerre, is that the Predator is actually being employed in over a dozen countries right now. And sure enough it related to two of my old stories, Pirates and Mogadishu. They are using the predator to patrol over 2.1 million square miles of ocean in the Gulf of Aden which has become a hotbed of maritime piracy.
What Lauren and I found on our journey around the country looking at the changing face of warfare, was that war is rapidly is starting to more and more resemble a video game. In one scene we even go to a military recruiting center that uses video games to solicit tech savvy gamers into the Army to fight future wars. Since the Predator is kind of the mother of all remote control technologies, and they are actually employing it against pirates right now, I couldn’t help but think that the gaming industry cant be far behind. There is actually a blurring of the line between actual war, and video games that depict it. Although I'm not a gamer at all (as is very obvious in the story as I crash about everything they have me play), I am pretty sure that a counter-piracy video game would be pretty cool, and realistic too. So, pirates, video, games, remote control warfare; that’s got to be a winning combination. Thank you EA, you know where to send the commission check to.

Everyone knows the old saying – “Two heads are better than one.” For the most part, it’s true. Get more people thinking about something, and everyone benefits – you get more and different opinions that might help you shape the way you think about… well, anything. It’s with this mindset that we go into our Two Brains review, where Molotov Cupcake and Snarkasaur have had a meeting of the minds to discuss Dante’s Inferno for the both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

CFD!'s Sage Knox takes a look at Pandemic Studios' final release - The Saboteur:
"Let’s face it: The Saboteur wasn’t on anyone’s immediate radar until creators Pandemic Studios got canned in late 2009. With virtually no hype and no marketing campaign, the circumstances surrounding the game’s final stages of development were more intriguing to most than the notion of actually playing the studio’s last project.
While the Pandemic brand lives on, the majority of its staff rushed to finish The Saboteur on time, only to be laid off days before its release. Some employees even went so far as to place a countdown clock in the building which predicted their job eliminations while others shook one last fist at the company who shook them off. Of course, the ultimate question was whether or not The Saboteur would be the doomed studio’s swan song or yet another of their current-gen disappointments."

CFD!'s Associate Reviews Editor Rob Rich has taken another tour of the galaxy on the Normandy and lived to tell the tale. Check out his review for BioWare's epic sequel, Mass Effect 2:
"It’s always something.
It’s seems almost immediately after Commander Shepard and company defeat Saren and put a stop to the Geth attack on the Citadel, a new threat to the galaxy pops up. Thousands of human colonists have been disappearing from settlements throughout the Terminus Systems. The Alliance isn’t doing jack about it either, which forces Shepard to look for help elsewhere. That elsewhere turns out to be Cerberus, the shadowy organization with very questionable ethics which was the source of many of the Commander’s woes throughout first game. But like any galactic savior worth their legendary reputation, Shepard sucks it up, joins forces with an ex-enemy, and sets out to find out the culprit behind this new threat.
And then kill it."

Once Major Nelson tweeted those NPD numbers on Twitter, it sparked an argument in our office. Which lead to this podcast. But then Edward V interjected by saying that Mass Effect 2 is not a system seller...Once Major Nelson tweeted those NPD numbers on Twitter, it sparked an argument in our... more
