Chinese conservationists have traded their birkenstocks and lab coats for giant fluffy panda costumes to help prepare captive-born cubs to survive in the wild. The researchers are anxious to ensure the endangered animals have as little contact with humans as possible. By dressing up as giant pandas the researchers hope that the newborn cubs will have a better chance to survive amongst wild pandas in the future.
Funnily the costumes look just like the hilarious "Never Say No To Panda" cheese ads - but luckily these mama pandas don't have such a temper.
Most pandas born in captivity are hand-reared but these little ones are being brought up by their "mothers" in a piece of protected woodland. The researchers are never far away, and the cubs every move is monitored by CCTV. Their vigilant keepers can see in a moment if they need medicine or a health check-up. Keepers at the Hetaoping Research and Conservation Centre in western China don't want the cubs to get used to seeing humans and believe the costumes are vital if the cubs are to survive when finally released into the wild. In 2006, Xiang Xiang, a five-year-old male, was freed after spending three years being taught survival skills such as foraging for food and marking his territory. After initially appearing to be adjusting well, he died after getting into a fight with a group of wild pandas. They are thought to have sensed something different about the human-reared interloper. With fewer than 2,500 giant pandas living free in China, conservationists are desperate not to take any chances with the next group facing life in the wild.

Do not let that happen!
"LONDON - Conservationists should “pull the plug” on giant pandas and let them die out, according to BBC presenter and naturalist Chris Packham.
“Here’s a species that, of its own accord, has gone down an evolutionary cul-de-sac,” Packham told Radio Times magazine.
The 48-year-old believes that money spent on conserving the panda would be better invested in other animals as the species is not strong enough to survive alone.
“It’s not a strong species. Unfortunately it’s big and cute and it’s a symbol of the WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature) — and we pour millions of pounds into panda conservation.”
“I reckon we should pull the plug. Let them go, with a degree of dignity ...”
Giant pandas are confined to forest areas high in the mountains of southwestern China and have to consume large quantities of bamboo to survive.
They number around 1,600 according to the WWF (www.wwf.org.uk), and are threatened by agriculture, logging and China’s increasing human population."

Giant pandas cost too much to protect and should be allowed to become extinct, television presenter Chris Packham has declared.
The wildlife expert thinks the millions of pounds spent on trying to save the species could be better spent on other environmental projects.
Last year he was quoted saying: "I'd eat the last panda if I could have the money we've spent on panda conservation back on the table for me to do more sensible things with."

"More than 60 percent of the wild giant panda population in China's Sichuan province was affected by the powerful quake that rocked the region and killed thousands in May 2008, a study said Monday.
Ecologists also found that the massive 8.0-magnitude earthquake, which triggered huge landslides across the region's mountainous terrain and left nearly 87,000 people dead or missing, destroyed nearly a quarter of panda habitat close to the tremor's epicenter.
"It is probable that habitat fragmentation has separated the giant panda population inhabiting this region, which could be as low as 35 individuals," said Weihua Xu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, the lead author of the study published in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.
"This kind of isolation increases their risk of extinction in the wild, due in part to a higher likelihood of inbreeding.""More than 60 percent of the wild giant panda population in China's Sichuan... more

Conservationists studying the endangered giant pandas, long known for being near-impossible to mate in captivity (and bad enough at it in the wild), may finally have hit upon a simple way to get them horny. A rare cold snap in Thailand seems to have got the country's famously celebate pair in Chiang Mai zoo into the mood, sparking hopes that a cub could be on the way. This latest unexpected success follows experts attempts with a number of bizarre and failed techniques, including diets, sperm donation and even panda pornography.Conservationists studying the endangered giant pandas, long known for being... more
