Excerpt: "Labor groups are predicting that hundreds of Chicago-area fast-food and retail workers will walk off the job for a one-day strike on Wednesday, just weeks after similar strikes hit New York City.
"The would-be striking workers are affiliated with the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago, which has launched a campaign calling for a living wage of $15 per hour in the city's fast-food and retail stores. Many such workers earn the Illinois minimum wage of $8.25 per hour or close to it, often without health care coverage or sick days due to scheduling practices that leave them with too few hours to qualify for those benefits.
"The workers in Chicago are not directly linked to the earlier strikes in New York, but their expected protests on Wednesday are part of a broader campaign by labor groups to raise standards in low-wage service-sector industries that traditionally have a weak union presence.
"In New York, the campaign has focused on fast-food eateries like McDonald's, Burger King and Taco Bell, while the Chicago protests are expected to include fast-food employees as well as workers from major retail chains and department stores. Low-wage workers who previously went on strike in New York said they'd been inspired by high-profile walkouts at Walmart stores around Black Friday last year."Excerpt: "Labor groups are predicting that hundreds of Chicago-area fast-food and... more
We traveled to the largest refugee camp in the West Bank to meet some of the Palestinian youth, and to find out if the Palestinian Authority's commitment to non-violent struggle against the occupying Israelis was a national consensus. While there, we experienced the extremes of violent and non-violent protests, from hunger strikers to jihadists.

North Korea has revealed its plans to strike targets in Hawaii and the continental United States in photos taken in Kim Jong-un's military command centre.
The photos appeared in the state-run Rodong newspaper and were apparently taken at an "emergency meeting" early on Friday morning. They show Kim signing the order for North Korea's strategic rocket forces to be on standby to fire at US targets, the paper said, with large-scale maps and diagrams in the background.
The images show a chart marked "US mainland strike plan" and missile trajectories that the NK News web site estimates terminate in Hawaii, Washington DC, Los Angeles and what is thought to be Austin, Texas.
The meeting of Pyongyang's senior military leaders was called after two US B2 bombers, flying out of bases in Missouri, carried out simulated bombing raids on North Korean targets on an island off the coast of South Korea.

Every time Hostess Brands, Inc. changed names, was acquired, merged or re-organized, there was additional debt accumulated, that added nothing to operations or production, piled on to the the balance sheet. This is similar to adding second mortgages onto a house where the proceeds are used for vacations and not home improvement. The concessions from the union in the previous bankruptcy were paying for this unproductive debt load.

The Stew has reported on the evils of Walmart in the past, and it even landed on our Worst of the One Percent list. Workers are now pushing back against one of the largest global corporate offenders. Yep, you heard right. Walmart workers are on strike in an effort to change their work environment, and stop company retaliation against them for speaking out against the practices within the company — and the strike is spreading.

A bitter dispute between Chicago public school teachers and mayor Rahm Emanuel may escalate into a strike on Monday in a showdown over education reform that has national implications.
Nearly 30,000 public school teachers and support staff represented by the Chicago Teachers Union have vowed to walk off the job starting at 12.01am on Monday if an impasse in contract talks with the city is not broken.
Emanuel, former White House chief of staff to President Barack Obama and a speaker at this week's Democratic national convention, has made reform of Chicago's troubled public schools a top priority. Emanuel cut short his trip to the convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, to deal with the teacher crisis.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African police opened fire Thursday on a crowd of striking miners that charged a line of officers trying to disperse them, killing some and wounding others in one of the worst shootings by authorities since the end of the apartheid era.
Police declined to offer casualty figures after the shooting at the Lonmin PLC mine near Marikana, a dusty town about 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg. However, police ministry spokesman Zweli Mnisi acknowledged late Thursday some of the miners there had been killed as more police and soldiers surrounded the hostels and shacks near Lonmin’s shuttered platinum mine.
The shooting happened Thursday afternoon after police failed to get the striking miners to hand over machetes, clubs and other weapons.
Some miners did leave, though others carrying weapons began war chants and soon started marching toward the township near the mine, said Molaole Montsho, a journalist with the South African Press Association who was at the scene.
The police opened up with a water cannon first, then used stun grenades and tear gas to try and break up the crowd, Montsho said.
Suddenly, a group of miners rushed through the underbrush and tear gas at a line of police officers. Officers immediately opened fire, with miners falling to the ground. Dozens of shots were fired by police armed with automatic rifles and pistols.

BBC News - Thousands of health and education workers in northern Ireland are on a 24-hour walkout in protest at budget cuts.Thousands of health and education workers in northern Ireland are on a 24-hour walkout in protest at budget cuts.
The department of health said that 2,400 appointments or procedures have been cancelled as a result of the action.
Most of the hospital appointments cancelled in Northern Ireland are for outpatients but some day procedures and elective surgeries have also been postponed.
The majority of outpatient clinics and elective surgery scheduled for Wednesday will not take place, but cover for emergencies will be in place.
Mr Poots said the strike action was "avoidable and unnecessary".
Patricia McKeown of Unison said the situation was "critical" and needed to be put under the spotlight.
"Many of the people taking industrial action are doing so for the very first time in their lives," she said.
"They've kept the services going in some very, very severe conditions and they are coming to the end of their tether, and they are saying, if we're going to have something here in four years' time when these massive budget cuts have all kicked in, it's not going to look the way it does today."Thousands of health and education workers in northern Ireland are on a 24-hour walkout... more
