American Nurse Talked British Man Into Suicide For Web Thrill

A former US nurse who got off on encouraging depressed and suicidal people in chat rooms to kill themselves have been found guilty of two counts of aiding suicide - including that of a British man. William Melchert-Dinkel surfed the internet posing as a depressed woman planning her own death and looking for others who might want to form a suicide pact.He took part in online chats about suicide with up to 20 people at a time and entered into fake suicide pacts with about 10, five of whom he believed killed themselves.Among those he contacted was Mark Drybrough, 32, from Coventry, who hanged himself in 2005.In 2008 an 18-year-old girl called Nadia Kajouji from Ottawa jumped into a river in 2008 wearing ice skates. Her body was found more than a month after she was reported missing.Nadia Kajouji had told Melchert-Dinkel in an online chat of her plan to make her death appear like an accident.The 48-year-old, who was charged in April with two counts of aiding suicide, had declined a jury trial and was found guilty by a judge in Faribault, Minnesota.Lawyer Paul Beaumaster said Melchert-Dinkel told police he did it for the "thrill of the chase".The judge said: "The defendant never tried to discourage either victim from committing death by suicide."Rather, the facts indicate repeated and relentless encouragement by defendant to complete the suicide."A British woman who used a chatroom where people discussed suicidal thoughts warned Minnesota police in March 2008 that she suspected an online predator of encouraging suicides. She later said she suspected Melchert-Dinkel.A police investigation found emails from at least six others who had been advised by him on how to commit suicide by hanging, including tips on knot-tying.Melchert-Dinkel asked one potential victim to use a webcam to record her hanging and told a man to practice beforehand to ensure a successful hanging.His lawyers accepted his actions were "sick" and "abhorrent" but argued the victims were predisposed to committing suicide and their client didn't sway them by making statements online.He faces up to 30 years in prison when sentenced on May 4.

'Dexter made me kill my brother': Teenager jailed for murdering boy, 10, claimed he was inspired by hit TV show

A teenager who strangled his 10-year-old brother because he was inspired by the TV series Dexter was today sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Andrew Conley, 18, who escaped the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of the killing, showed no emotion as he was jailed for strangling younger brother Conner at their home in Rising Sun, Indian.
The teenager told investigators that he identified with the character from the hit TV series about a serial killer and that he had wanted to kill someone for years.

He said his urge to commit murder was like someone who was hungry and had to eat and had he had also fantasised about murdering his father.
Conley told police he had been messing around with his brother Conner when he locked his hands around his neck.
He told police he strangled the 10-year-old with his bare hands for 20 minutes to make sure he was dead.

He stuffed his body in a rubbish bag and dumped him in a park near their home in Rising Sun, Indiana, and later drove to his girlfriend's home where they watched a film.
Conley confessed to killing his brother saying he had an uncontrollable urge for murder and wanted to model himself after the TV serial killer Dexter.
In a court affidavit he said: 'I feel just like him'. He also likened his urge to kill to someone craving a hamburger.
The hit TV series stars Michael C Hall as a blood splatter expert working for Miami Police who also doubles as a serial killer dispatching his victims in a grisly way.
Hall won a Golden Globe for his portrayal but the show was criticised in the U.S. for its violent theme by the Parents Television Council.
Lawyers for Conley had expected to claim he was insane at the time of the killing last November.
But on the opening day of his trial Conley changed his plea to guilty.
Prosecutor Aaron Negangard told the court: 'It's disturbing that a 17-year-old would want to kill under any circumstances, let alone his own brother.'
He described Conley as 'emotionless' when he was interviewed by police.
This is the second murder that was allegedly inspired by Dexter.
In 2008, a 29-year-old Canadian man Mark Twitchell mimicked a storyline from the drama when he allegedly killed 39-year-old Johnny Altinger.
