Is Marvel's movie universe about to skip over the dull parts of each character's history? A new rumor about the villains in The Avengers suggests that Iron Man, Thor and Captain America's movie incarnations will leap eight years' worth of stories in a single bound.
Comic Book Movie is amongst various websites and media outlets to have received rumor that Marvel's 2012 Avengers movie will not follow comic continuity by having Thor's half-brother Loki (accidentally) be responsible for the formation of the team, but instead find itself jumping all the way to the Kree-Skrull War storyline from #89-97 of the original comic via a brainwashed and rampaging Hulk that may offer moviemakers a chance to avoid working with Ed Norton again.
For those not well-versed in Avengers history, the Kree-Skrull War sees Earth caught in the middle of an intergalactic war between two alien races, the relatively noble and occasionally-blue-skinned Kree and the untrustworthy shapeshifting Skrulls, who would later go on to invade Earth again in 2008's Secret Invasion mini-series. According to the rumor, the Skrulls would be the central villains in the Avengers movies - and, yes, that's plural, because the rumor states that the Skrulls wouldn't stand revealed until the end of the first movie, with the Kree-Skrull War itself taking center stage in an as-yet-unannounced-but-are-you-really-surprised sequel.

ou can’t keep a good Predator down. Or bad Aliens. Or both the humans running for their lives from said aliens and predator. Good news for fans of the series, because rumor has it that the third installment in the battlin’ aliens franchise is, in all likelihood, will happen over at 20th Century Fox. Or at least that’s the word according to a scooper who told Shock Til You Drop, a horror movie site, so I don’t know what they’re doing covering sci-fi, but I ain’t complain’.
An anonymous source over at 20th Century Fox got in touch with us over the weekend to relay the news another Aliens vs. Predator sequel is a "certainty" at this point. If you recall, the brothers Strause - who helmed the Christmas release Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem - stated Fox was going to take a "wait-and-see" approach to a third chapter, furthermore, that the story would have to continue in space (details). "AvP-R" grossed a worldwide total of $128.8 million; $41 million domestically. It hits DVD on April 15th (specs and art). No word yet if the Strause brothers will return to the franchise.
I guess $128 million, not including DVD sales, which should add a nice chunk of change to the final total, is good enough for a sequel. I still haven’t seen the second one, though…

On paper, some book-to-movie adaptations seem doomed from the start. Others seem like they've got a chance, especially when the book is strong. So why don't they always work out? Peter Sorel Cameron uses Fernando Meirelles’ new film “Blindness” as an example of a movie that sounded good, but fell short of expectations. He says this can happen when films try too hard to not stray from a book's complex plot line - you can fit more in a five-hundred page book than a two-and-a-half-hour long movie. Or maybe some books just cannot become movies - they have sulbtlties that cannot be translated onto the screen.

Peter Parker can catch all sorts of villains in his webs, but the one thing Spider-Man couldn't bring to Sony Pictures was a workable script -- and budget -- for the $2.5-billion franchise's fourth installment, derailing one of the most lucrative movie series in Hollywood history.
Less than a week after the studio said it was postponing production on the fourth web-slinger movie over story problems, Sony on Monday pulled the plug on the project as it was being conceived with director Sam Raimi after he told the studio he wasn't comfortable moving forward with the sequel, originally scheduled for release in May 2011.
Star Tobey Maguire, who has played the arachnid superhero in the previous three "Spider-Man" films, is also bowing out, as is his on-screen love interest, Kirsten Dunst. The studio said it would hire a new star and director and re-boot the movie as a story about Parker's early life as a "teenager grappling with contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises." Because Sony is essentially starting from scratch, the studio has pushed the picture's release to 2012.
The resulting film is expected to be far less costly than the production Raimi had envisioned for his version. Sony wanted to make the picture for about $230 million, which the director thought was not enough given his ambitions.
" 'Spider-Man' will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," Sony Chairman Michael Lynton said in a prepared statement. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films."
The studio declined to elaborate on the decision. But several people familiar with the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter said Sony hopes to find a new director and actors quickly, with filming expected to begin before the end of the year. Screenwriter James Vanderbilt ("Zodiac") has been hired to write the script, and "Spider-Man" veterans Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin will return as producers, the studio said.

James Cameron’s Avatar is Disney’s Pocahontas?
Well, we all know the similarities between “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Forrest Gump,” but what about the latest record-breaking 3D epic from James Cameron?
I thought it was the sci-fi version of “Dances With Wolves” (or maybe “FernGully: The Last Rainforest”) but Matt Bateman makes a pretty good argument for James Cameron’s “Avatar” actually being the same film as Disney’s “Pocahontas.”

Digital Rights Group (DRG), a leading distributor of content in the UK, has signed a development deal for the television comedy series Blowout with Filmaka members Michael Kinney and Max Herholz. They were discovered through Filmaka's Hard Times competition, which DRG sponsored. Now, fresh from that success, DRG is pleased to offer another opportunity for Filmaka members to have their ideas heard. They are partnering with Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC), Canada's national public broadcaster. This time, the competition is . . . to invent a competition.
Send us a pitch for a reality or game show you think might be the next international craze - the next Deal or No Deal, Dancing With the Stars, or The Weakest Link. We'll fund five of them to be turned into pilots, and those pilots will be considered by professional television development executives. If they think you've got what it takes, they may approach you about further development. If not, you'll all be voted off the island.

Skxawng!
When James Cameron’s science-fiction opus “Avatar” comes to the screen this month, audiences will witness meticulously conceived alien characters — speaking a meticulously conceived alien language.
.............................................................................................................................................
It is in these linguistically credible interactions that “Avatar” may make its biggest contribution to science fiction. In her foreword to “The Encyclopedia of Fictional and Fantastic Languages,” Ursula K. Le Guin mocked the conventions of pulp sci-fi perpetuated by films like the “Star Wars” franchise: “the permanent hegemony of manly, English-speaking men, the risible grotesqueness of non-English languages and the inviolable rule that pretty women have musical names ending in ‘a.’ ” The linguist Harold F. Schiffman has similarly noted that alien languages in films are primarily designed to “confuse and amuse,” with little or no attention paid to the nuances of cross-linguistic communication. Our sci-fi heroes may still be buff English speakers, but a little sensitivity across the human-alien divide could help them seem less like skxawngs.
