Along with their colleagues in the House and Senate, the politicians who will get a status report from General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker have as much as $196 million of their own money invested in companies doing business with the Department of Defense, the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics has calculated. From aircraft and weapons manufacturers to producers of medical supplies and soft drinks, the investment portfolios of more than a quarter of Congress—and of countless constituents—include holdings in companies paid billions of dollars each month to support America's military in Iraq and elsewhere.
According to the most recent reports of their personal finances, 151 current members of Congress had between $78.7 million and $195.5 million invested in companies that received defense contracts of at least $5 million in 2006. In all, these companies received more than $275.6 billion from the government in 2006, or $755 million per day, according to FedSpending.org, a website of the budget watchdog group OMB Watch.
Lawmakers' investments in these contractors yielded them between $15.8 million and $62 million in income from 2004 through 2006, through dividends, capital gains, royalties and interest, the Center found. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), who are two of Congress's wealthiest members, were among the lawmakers who earned the most income from these contractors between 2004 and 2006, with Sensenbrenner making at least $3.2 million and Kerry reaping at least $2.6 million.

Add this to the divisive debate over race in the presidential campaign: Whites who said race was important in picking their candidate have been about twice as likely to back Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton than Sen. Barack Obama.
Exit polls of voters in Democratic primaries also show that whites who considered the contender's race - Clinton is white, Obama is black - were three times likelier to say they would only be satisfied with Clinton as the nominee than if Obama were chosen.
The figures shed some light on race's effect on a competition that moves to the April 22 primary in Pennsylvania, which has a slightly greater proportion of whites than average. The numbers also underscore the challenge Obama could face in the general election, when whites will comprise a larger share of voters and tend to be more conservative than those participating in the Democratic primaries.Add this to the divisive debate over race in the presidential campaign: Whites who... more

Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton debuted her first ad targeted specificaly at the Indiana primary. One of two key elections following Pensylvania and one of the largest remaning states in the democratic contest. The ad features Hillary's campaign cochair and a man many consider Hillary's presumptive pick for the vice presidency Sen Evan Bayh, the former Governor of Indiana and the son of popular Sen Birch bayh who ironicaly the author of the constitutional amendment which reduced the voting age to 18 and has had such an impact on this election in favor of Obama. In the ad the senator speaks about jobs and electability two concerns toping the minds of democrats in this closely contested election. Hilary has also recieved the endorsement of the previous democratic Governor of Indiana Joe Kernand and his wife. "House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders are saying that Iraq's government needs to spend more of its own money on reconstruction now that the United States has spent more than $45 billion. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., says future U.S. reconstruction payments should be in the form of loans, not grants — resurrecting a proposal that died in the Republican-controlled Congress at the start of the war five years ago.
Nelson, a member of the Senate committee that oversees spending legislation, says it's not fair for the United States to pay for reconstruction when Iraq's oil revenue could be $60 billion or more this year because of record prices. Nelson said he planned to offer an amendment to the Iraq spending bill that would require Iraq to pay back future reconstruction aid as well as money approved by Congress but not yet spent."
I don't know about you, but proposing loans sounds to me like another structural adjustment debt disaster waiting to happen. Whenever the next President decides to withdraw combat forces, we should still be helping Iraq fix the infrastructure that we have been responsible for decades for destroying. I assume at that point congressional oversight on wasteful spending and corrupt or inefficient contracting will still be sorely needed."House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders are saying that... more

Hillary Clinton’s campaign says the candidate will stop telling the story of an uninsured pregnant woman who lost the baby and died after being denied medical care, following a hospital raising questions over its accuracy.
Clinton has frequently told the emotional story of the woman from rural Ohio since late February. In the speech, Clinton said the woman made minimum wage working at a local pizza restaurant, without insurance, when she became pregnant. Clinton said the woman ran into trouble and went to a hospital in a nearby county but was denied treatment because she couldn’t afford a $100 payment.
In the speech, Clinton said the woman later was taken to the hospital by ambulance and lost the baby. The young woman was then taken by helicopter to a Columbus hospital where she died of complications.
As recently as Friday night in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Clinton said, “As I was listening to this story being told, I was just aching inside. It is so wrong, in this good, great and rich country, that a young woman and her baby would die because she didn’t have health insurance or a hundred dollars to get examined.”
But an Athens, Ohio hospital is questioning the accuracy of the story. While Clinton never named the hospital in her speech, the woman she was referring to was treated at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens. The hospital said the woman did indeed have insurance, and at least at their hospital was never turned away.

Hillary Clinton has agreed to a Sunday, April 27, primetime debate in North Carolina, which would be "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric's first turn to moderate a presidential debate.
Now all that remains is for Barack Obama, who previously accepted CBS' offer of a debate April 19, to agree to the new date.
"It is more than passing strange that in the year when you have the first serious woman candidate and the first serious African American candidate, the only woman anchor hasn't had a role," said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. "That should change. CBS does need that break and Katie needs that break." Hillary Clinton has agreed to a Sunday, April 27, primetime debate in North Carolina,... more

Hillary alluded to it. Obama is aware of it. So that just leaves millions of democratic "john and jane Q public" in the dark.
The media from ABC to CNN to WKTZ has been very good about leading voers to water-cooler arguments over superdelegates. However, what they haven't told you is that even you so-called "pledged" delegates are not obligated to vote according to primary or caucus results.

"Five times to my face (Richardson) said that he would never do that," a red-faced, finger-pointing Clinton erupted. The former president then went on a tirade that ran from the media's unfair treatment of Hillary to questions about the fairness of the votes in state caucuses that voted for Obama" (edited per smorrissey's suggestion)
"The Bill Clinton who met privately with California's superdelegates at last weekend's state convention was a far cry from the congenial former president who afterward publicly urged fellow Democrats to 'chill out' over the race between his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Barack Obama," the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
"It was one of the worst political meetings I have ever attended," one superdelegate said.
According to those at the meeting, Clinton - who flew in from Chicago with bags under his eyes - was classic old Bill at first, charming and making small talk with the 15 or so delegates who gathered in a room behind the convention stage.

What can we learn from examining the spiritual beliefs of public figures? In the case of Hillary Clinton, a complex, seemingly conservative disposition is revealed, according to an article by Kathryn Joyce and Jeff Sharlet in Mother Jones.
"Clinton's God talk is more complicated -- and more deeply rooted -- than either fans or foes would have it," write Joyce and Sharlet, "a revelation not just of her determination to out-Jesus the GOP, but of the powerful religious strand in her own politics. Over the past year, we've interviewed dozens of Clinton's friends, mentors, and pastors about her faith, her politics, and how each shapes the other. And while media reports tend to characterize Clinton's subtle recalibration of tone and style as part of the Democrats' broader move to recapture the terrain of 'moral values,' those who know her say there's far more to it than that.
"Through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as the Fellowship. Her collaborations with right-wingers such as Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) grow in part from that connection. 'A lot of evangelicals would see that as just cynical exploitation,' says the Reverend Rob Schenck, a former leader of the militant anti-abortion group Operation Rescue who now ministers to decision makers in Washington. 'I don't....there is a real good that is infected in people when they are around Jesus talk, and open Bibles, and prayer.'"

Howard Dean told an AP reporter that he has on several occasions told both the Obama and Clinton camps that their attacks have crossed the line and may end up damaging the party's base support.
I have seen this in the rancor of attacks that each side throws at each other. And I fear that if it does continue we will end up with another warmongering Republican in office. Someone (cough, Hilary) needs to do the honorable thing and bow out so that the party can concentrate on taking the White House back and begin fixing the last eight years of foreign and domestic policy disasters, abandonment of treaties, economic fuckster Ben Bernanke and the rest of the disastrous Bush & Cheney legacy.
Will the Dems lose their chance if this is not resolved soon? Howard Dean told an AP reporter that he has on several occasions told both the Obama... more

The prospect of a Hillary Clinton victory in Pennsylvania's April 22 Democratic primary isn't swaying some of the state's superdelegates, who are hanging back while they calculate whether rival Barack Obama might prove a stronger draw at the top of the ticket in November.
While the New York senator is leading in polls, some undecided superdelegates -- elected officials who get an automatic vote on the party presidential nomination regardless of the primary's outcome -- say they are concerned that her nomination would motivate greater numbers of Republicans to turn out in November to vote against her, and other Democrats too.
``If we nominate Senator Clinton, it is possible we are going to stir up the passions of people on the far right who otherwise would not be very excited about this election,'' said Representative Jason Altmire, a freshman Democrat in a competitive re-election race. ``And I do have that concern.''The prospect of a Hillary Clinton victory in Pennsylvania's April 22 Democratic... more
