"If the International Space Station and a Toyota Prius were to mate, the Wired LivingHome would be its offspring - a mix of space-age technology and earth-friendly design that makes the effort to save the planet seem, at first glance, a little less austere.
The five-bedroom, four-bathroom house is a joint project of Wired Magazine and the architectural firm LivingHomes and was constructed out of eleven glass and steel prefabricated modules on a sloping canyon lot in the exclusive Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The concept is to show that connectivity and sustainable living don't have to be mutually exclusive. "
That's cool and all, but at a whopping $4.3 million, by the time I save enough to buy the damn thing the Earth will be over and done with anyway."If the International Space Station and a Toyota Prius were to mate, the Wired... more

You probably don't need to be told that the threat of climate change is real. If you're concerned about the issue, it's fairly easy to conjure the apocalyptic scenes of widespread drought, frequent deadly storms, mass hunger, and wars over natural resources like oil and water. Much harder to come by are examples of positive actions that can avert these disasters and ease the crisis in places where they are already in play. So let's skip the litany of catastrophes that await if global warming is not controlled. Instead, why not focus on some solutions? None are perfect or complete, but each offers a model of positive change that is more than theoretically possible -- it is already happening. You probably don't need to be told that the threat of climate change is real. Tainted toothpaste? Toxic tomatoes? Killer toys? Controversial health scares over tainted products have led many of us running for the preservative-free hills.
It's changing the way we buy produce, pet food and paint, so it should come as no surprise that the beauty industry is responding. Sales of organic personal care items reached $350 million last year, an increase of $68 million over 2005, according to manufacturers data compiled by the Organic Trade Association, an industry group.

Freedom is late.
Since 2003, a colossal barge called the Freedom Ship, of debatable tax status, should have been chugging with majestic aimlessness from port to port, a leviathan rover with more than 40,000 wealthy full-time residents living, working and playing on deck. That was the aim eight years ago when the project first made headlines, confidently claiming that construction would start in 2000.Freedom is late.

A few weeks ago I read what I believe is the most important environmental book ever written. It is not Silent Spring, Small Is Beautiful or even Walden. It contains no graphs, no tables, no facts, figures, warnings, predictions or even arguments. Nor does it carry a single dreary sentence, which, sadly, distinguishes it from most environmental literature. It is a novel, first published a year ago, and it will change the way you see the world.
Cormac McCarthy's book The Road considers what would happen if the world lost its biosphere, and the only living creatures were humans, hunting for food among the dead wood and soot. Some years before the action begins, the protagonist hears the last birds passing over, "their half-muted crankings miles above where they circled the earth as senselessly as insects trooping the rim of a bowl". McCarthy makes no claim that this is likely to occur, but merely speculates about the consequences.A few weeks ago I read what I believe is the most important environmental book ever... more
