Fascinating article which questions why the green movement seems to reluctant to actually support big technological programs that could solve the problem of climate change.
The author's conclusion: the environmental movement is at its core misanthropic and Luddite; too busy hating humans to formulate rational or progressive policies.

It is absolutely fascinating, not to mention inspiring, to see a group of people that care so much about their profession. Especially in the Western world, as we view garbage collectors as a low-intellect job.
Could you imagine if we had these motivated and hard-working 60,000 sorting through the trash in New York City every day? How much would we save? How would this group change the impact of our wasteful daily lives?
I hope they find a way to remain relevant in Egypt and to ensure the continued recycling there. I especially love it when the woman tells them to stop going through the recycling bins - they are so excited about the town, talking about how hard they would work if they were there. Imagine...

what a surprise: a protest, a response to the protest, a protest against the response to the original protest, and on and on they go. i'm not taking a stance on whether the trees should get cut down or not, just amused by the silly goings-on at Berkeley. random fact: did anyone know it the proper pronunciation is Barkley? Those Berkeley kids, think they're so smart and don't even know how to pronounce the name of their own city/school properly.what a surprise: a protest, a response to the protest, a protest against the response... more

Nature lovers can take solace in the idea that the planet will thrive once we've finally destroyed ourselves with global warming. But Weisman takes the fantasy one step further: Let's not wait for climate change, he says. Let's start depopulating right now.
Instead of burning down our numbers with oil and gas, we might follow the advice of the founder of the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement, who tells Weisman that everyone in the world should stop having kids all at once. Weisman isn't up for quite so drastic a measure, but he makes his own pitch, moderate in comparison: Let's cut the birth rate to one child per couple, for a few generations at least.
Could population control be the next big thing in green culture?Nature lovers can take solace in the idea that the planet will thrive once we've... more
