Japan to require cognitive tests on old people before they can drive

Old people on the road can be dangerous. I'm not saying as a blanket rule, but the older you get, sometimes your reaction time slows down appreciably. My host parents in Japan weren't such a case. Despite the fact they were in their 70s, both of them could drive just fine -- apart from my host father's open bottle of whiskey in the glove compartment.

So, I find it interesting and good of the Japanese government to require people 75 and older to measure their "cognitive level," in order to reduce the number of accidents involving old people. The test will cost 650 yen, and will consist of the following criteria:

Elderly drivers will first be asked to write the current date and time. They will then be shown 16 illustrations, for example of animals, for a short time and asked to describe in writing what they have seen. They will also be asked to draw a picture of a clock indicating a particular time.

And once they've passed the test, that's not all there is. Then the elderly need to sit through an hour and a half lecture on safe driving. I think at that point the old people would just be fed up with the whole process. It must be frustrating. According to the results from the test they did over the summer, only two percent of the people they tested were declining in cognicity, while 24 percent had only a slight decline. The rest of the people tested were doing just fine.

I think that it's a great step, albeit somewhat troublesome for the elderly, We just have to remember that driving cars is a privelege, not a right. There comes a time when we're not capable of controlling our death machines, and that we may need to give up control of it one day.

In light of millions of baby boomers turning 65 in the next few years, I strongly encourage this in the States also. I have seen countless acts of reckless driving by old people who think they're entitled to the road because they're older than fucking dirt.

I was once driving down the road (under the speed limit by about 10), an Eat n' Park was on my right and some old lady was coming towards me in the opposite lane. At the last second she veers in front of me and I slam on my bakes while simultaneously shitting my pants. I look up at her and instead of looking apologetic or confused or stupid, she points her finger at me, glares and purses her lips like it was my fault she's a psycho bitch. There wasn't even anyone behind me so it's not like she was squeezing in before a long line of traffic.
