Playing with children's lives: Big Tobacco in Malawi

Sickly and malnourished, Kirana Kapito began his working life on a large commercial tobacco estate in Malawi's northern region. The farms sell their produce on the country's auction floors directly to international corporations including Limbe Leaf Tobacco, majority owned by the Swiss-registered Continental Tobacco Company and U.S.-based Alliance One Tobacco.

Kirana is one of 250 million children across the world involved in work that is damaging to their mental, physical and emotional development. Some 57 million of these endangered children live in Sub-Sahara Africa. And with an estimated 1.4 million child laborers, the small, southern African nation of Malawi has the highest incidence of child labor in southern Africa, according to the Olso, Norway-based, FAFO Institute for Applied Social Science.

Kirana was eight years old when he first went to work in the fields. Estate owners transported him and his parents from their home village, Mulanje, along with 45 other families. The truck journey covered more than 1,000 kilometers and ended in the tobacco fields in Rumphi in northern Malawi.

Kirana's mother, Jane Kapito, 45, says the family left home seeking a better life. “Four years later, my whole family is still struggling with poverty. My son has to work as hard as everyone else if we have to afford the basic necessities. The money that my husband and I receive from the tobacco estate is not enough,” she says.

Now 12, Kirana has never been to school. For the past six months, his health has been failing and he can no longer work as hard as he used to. His mother says her little boy is malnourished and therefore contracts different infections easily. The family often goes without a proper meal for up to three days.

“Just in the past two months, Kirana has been afflicted by malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia,” Jane Kapito said. “He's my only child and I am so scared of losing him.”

TV is GOD! Kill your Television or Not.

I really like this photography studio called Institutional Green, their slogan is "finding beauty in the dissonance."

I really love this image because it really sums up what I am feeling about what mainstream television and network news and reality TV is all about.

People in this world have latched onto television as though it were the de facto truth teller. If its on the network news its got to be true. Which also means that if it's not on the network news, ah then it must be at the very least a lie and better yet a conspiracy. These people are watching this tube and they are doing everything it tells them to do; it creates confusion in their minds so they are always asking themselves "what do I do?" It exploits all their fears and vulnerabilities in order to assault their senses and manipulate their minds; to control their thoughts.

It demands obedience by showing us why we aren't happy and how to make ourselves happier if only we consume. It constantly is telling us that we are not good enough because we have body odor, we don't pee enough or we pee too much, we don't have enough hair or it isn't shinny enough, our bodies are too fat, we are ugly, we are over worked and need a vacation, we need to buy life insurance because we are definitely going to die some day, etc, and etc, and etc. I am sure many of you can think of dozens of commercial examples that would have demonstrated these things.

Television has become the god, the mighty oracle that validates reality for millions of people all over the world. It is the most powerful medium because it can speak volumes in seconds. It can make or break anyone at any time. There are but a few who control and wield such power and they are the corporations that own the airwaves and they ultimately decide the reality they want us to accept.

However on Current TV we have something entirely different than that so I don't entirely agree with the statement "kill your TV" because I can see that TV is the most powerful medium and what we need are more voices, more channels of communication. We need more current TV channels so more voices can be heard through this medium.
