Some people seem to think illegal immigration isn't a problem, not to sound like a bitch but you wouldn't if you or your parents were illegals and if they weren't your grandparents. And what's with everyone saying that this country was built on the backs of immigrates, i didn't know slaves migrated to this country it was built on slavery and free labor that's the truth. Wanting a better life is great but it's hard to say i want better life and can't get to where i come from and then claim you deserve to be a citizen because all you want to do is work and have a life for your family and kids. What about the guy who's family knows nothing else besides America and also wants a better life but can't achieve that because someone says i'll do the work cheaper and longer with no health coverage and no benefits, cash only.
In no other country can illegal immigrates demand anything, only in the great USA, so i say give them their citizenship, you want to claim to be true American citizen then pay taxes, you believe you have a right to the same health care and rights then you should pay for it. If we registered every illegal immigrate and then taxed them out the ass, set in place laws that had harsher penalties like actual jail time instead of a free trip home, i bet you people would think twice about running across the border or coming to America for vacation and staying. I'm just wondering why people feel if you say "you don't deserve shit and the fact you get taken advantage of is your own fault", their a racist and that America and should be open for any and everyone.
But it is your fault you get paid low wages and have no health care and get taken advantage of, since when is anything in this world for free..? why do you think that what you go through in your country gives you a right to come to another and make it hard on another man. Mexico's president even stated to the world "that illegals take the jobs that not even blacks want"
and he's damn right we've worked them since 1506 for FREE and the little bit of minimum wage blacks fought and died for won't go up cause someone with no papers will work for anything. Rules are set in place for a reason, they might suck but you can't make a change if your willing to be happy eating shit all you do is make it stink for the rest of us.
Not only would it help us out with our hugh debt, create jobs and force us to over haul the entire system cause you know someones gonna get mad and swear a great injustice but wheres the justice for us actual tax paying, social security card carrying citizens...?
i love George Lopez but he's an idiot to think that illegal immigration only upsets white people as if AMERICANS don't need a job. He represents his country to the fullest yet we as Americans don't have the same right?. If we flooded his country and under cut his fellow men, push them out of jobs then tell them you really don't want to work this job let me do it as well as stressed the medical system and basically did what we wanted in Mexico they claim the capitalist Americanos were destroying his homeland and we'd just continue to be the big mean super power.

An estimated 4,000 Zimbabweans cross into South Africa every day, as it becomes more and more difficult to find jobs on their home turf. Federal agents opened fire Tuesday on three vans carrying at least 70 people suspected of being illegal immigrants when the drivers of the vehicles tried to crash through a California border crossing that is considered the busiest such crossing in the world, officials said. Four people were injured.
The border was closed for several hours after the incident, which occurred at around 3:25 p.m. local time at the San Ysidro crossing. Federal immigration and customs agents fired their guns during the incident, officials said. Three passengers in the van were injured and taken to local hospitals, and a passenger in a separate vehicle was also injured. No agents were hurt, and none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
The San Diego Police Department is investigating the shooting. Federal agents are questioning the passengers, who have been detained.Federal agents opened fire Tuesday on three vans carrying at least 70 people suspected... more
Now, we don't really know what to think about this one, considering how many rumors are swirling about upcoming Apple devices at the moment, but make of it what you will. An online survey currently being conducted by Borders bookstore lists the "Apple iPAD (large screen reading device)" in one of its questions about e-readers.
There along with the Amazon Kindle, the Kindle DX, the Sony Reader and the Plastic Logic Reader is the option to check "I plan to buy an Apple IPAD this year." It's safe to say that there are two options here: either Borders has access to some privileged Apple tablet / Kindle killer info that we, the wondering masses, do not (and yet is still making blunders like "Blackberry" and "Apple iTouch") -- or they're just assuming that there must be some truth to all the fuss. And hey, who could blame them?
Like we said, we're not going to put too much stock in it, but go ahead and hit the read link to take the survey for yourself -- but be forewarned: you're going to have to dish on your opinion of Dan Brown before you get to the good stuff. Now, we don't really know what to think about this one, considering how many rumors... more

When the Foot and Mouth epidemic hit Britain in 2001 it seemed like nothing could stop it. The government slaughtered millions of animals and we could even smell the smoke from burning pyres in our classrooms. Friends were stuck on their farms, the countryside was clsed and the tourism industry was badly hit. Scared and angry, we were determined to find out all we could about Foot and Mouth disease. The more we researched, the more we learned about how fear about Foot and Mouth created far more damage than the disease itself. "Fires Over England" is about communication and sharing knowledge. Dialogue is essential in order to create real security and to protect our way of live in rural England.
"Fires Over England" is one of eleven short films in the "Beyond Borders: Personal Stories from a Small Planet" series.
What do youth fear most in their lives? How do they overcome those fears? 'Beyond Borders: Personal Stories from a Small Planet' is a creative burst of defiance and hope by teenagers who are overcoming the huge obstacles and ignorance that have defined their lives. It's an inspiring compilation of nine short films written, shot and edited by teenagers who weave documentary filmmaking, animation and archival footage to tell personal stories on fear and security. With mentorship from professional filmmakers, youth produced films that are powerful, startling and awe-inspiring.
With stories from Afghanistan, Argentina, Colombia, England Jordan, Korea, Guatemala, Sierra Leone, Ukraine and the United States, these youth-produced films will challenge audiences to redefine fear and the priorities we make in a post 9/11 world.Featuring: Daisy Badger

The state of Texas spent $2 million in federal grant money to install 14 Webcams along its border with Mexico. After its first year, the crowd-sourced surveillance program is out of money and has only yielded 11 arrests, according to published reports.
Texas’ “BlueServo,” dubbed a “virtual stake-out,” was supposed to be revolutionary. Why hire border guards when the eyes of the Internet could be harnessed to prevent unauthorized border crossings?
Texas officials predicted that their planned 200 cameras would lead to the capture of at least 4,500 border-jumpers and roughly 1,200 drug-related arrests.
Results, however, fell far short of the program’s goals, according to the Associated Press. The cameras have deterred about 300 attempting to cross illegally, the state said. Of the 11 arrests made, just three came within the program’s first six months.
While some 125,000 individuals registered to become “virtual Texas deputies,” many appeared to do so out of mere curiosity. And though numerous comments were left by the site’s users, they rarely pointed out illegal activity. The state of Texas spent $2 million in federal grant money to install 14 Webcams along... more

Eran Riklis has that knack: He can depict people confronting government intransigence and bureaucratic ineptitude without lapsing into mawkish sentimentality or strident speechifying. In THE SYRIAN BRIDE, he depicted the hell that ordinary people can face just trying to cross a border; now, in LEMON TREE, he shows how a Palestinian woman with an emotional stake in her family’s lemon grove (played by the great Hiam Abbass) faces down an entire government that wants to raze the plants for the sake of national security.

Alex Rivera felt that there was more that could be explored in cyberpunk. He looked at the idea of humans jacking into cyberspace, and saw a way that corporations could get their cheap labor without making the workers go through the whole, messy business of crossing the border. Thus was born SLEEP DEALER, a science fiction adventure in which a hapless, Mexican cyberhacker falls afoul of the U.S. government (you don’t mess around with anyone who sponsors a TV show dedicated to relaying live feeds from armed drones), and winds up in Tijuana laboring away in a “sleep dealer,” otherwise known as a virtual factory.
With a mostly Latino cast and a vision of the future that treads the line between BRAZIL-like absurdity and disturbing possibility, SLEEP DEALER makes for one unique indie project. I sat down with Rivera to explore how he pulled it off.Alex Rivera felt that there was more that could be explored in cyberpunk. He looked at... more
“On the day of its first foreign policy discussions with Mexico, the Obama administration remains mum on whether it will honor a campaign promise to alter a Bush administration policy establishing a massive fence along the U.S.-Mexico border, including in federally protected areas.”
So far, the Department of Homeland Security has erected about 613 miles of new pedestrian fencing and vehicle barriers to thwart illegal border crossers and drug smugglers trying to enter the United States.
While President Obama voted for the 2005 Secure Fence Act as an Illinois senator, he pledged on the campaign trail last year to review the Bush administration's fortification efforts, in part due to concerns about environmental impacts.
"I think that the key is to consult with local communities, whether it's on the commercial interests or the environmental stakes of creating any kind of barrier," Obama said last year at a debate in Austin, Texas.
While acknowledging that some areas may need fencing, Obama said deploying new surveillance technology and stepping up patrols would "be the better approach."
Yet almost three months into the new administration, neither Obama nor Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano are addressing the issue. Meanwhile, construction is beginning on two new sections of the fence, one through the Rio Grande Valley near Brownsville, Texas, and another in the Otay Mountain Wilderness in California's San Diego County.“On the day of its first foreign policy discussions with Mexico, the Obama... more
I went down to the US/MX border in order to embarrass the US Government into completing the new walls, and enforcing the laws on the books. What I found after traveling on both sides of the US – Mexico border is that the walls we have don’t work, if the ones we have do not work, why put new ones up? Also, we need to pass immigration reform and let more immigrants in legally (decriminalize them). That will stop illegal immigration as quickly as decriminalizing drugs will stop, or greatly reduce drug smuggling and take much of the profit out of both drug smuggling and people smuggling.
This is the epiphany, or change of heart that I had after learning all the facts, not just the one sided, racist bordering rants on right-wing talk rants on talk radio. Please believe that I am sincere in this change of heart, and will prove it with some additional footage from some of the interviews, which I will be posting here in the near future. Another reason for the change of heart is the numerous folks that I interviewed who were stuck in Mexico after growing up for 20 years in the US. They did not come voluntarily; they were brought by their parents.
I am sorry if the main clip on this web page and You Tube seems middle of the road, but the current clip on this page was made before my epiphany. However, if you read between the lines, while not obvious, it points out that walls do not work, and immigration reform is sorely needed.I went down to the US/MX border in order to embarrass the US Government into... more
Zouheir Alnajjar, a Collective Journalism contributor who lives in Gaza, takes us through the secret tunnels that connect Gaza and Egypt - a common route for smuggling under the border.
The tunnels beneath the Egyptian border have become a common way for Palestinians to attain items that they cannot due to the Israeli restrictions on imports into the Gaza Strip. Some of these items, like medicine or cigarettes, are relatively innocuous, but weapons and rocket parts are also smuggled through the tunnels, making them a target for Israel's IDF forces.

Do we really need to spend millions more on a fence right now? Thanks to the US economy, immigrants are leaving the US via the southern border, not trying to get in illegally.

"Congress has set aside $2.7 billion for the fence since 2006. But there's no estimate how much the entire system — the physical fence and the technology — will cost to build, let alone maintain."

After two failed tries, an unmanned aircraft expected to be the first to patrol the northern U.S. border completed a flight from Arizona to North Dakota.
U.S Customs and Border Protection officials said the Predator B drone touched down Saturday at the Grand Forks Air Force Base after a six-hour flight from Libby Army Airfield in Sierra Vista, Ariz.
"The aviators all brag about the perfect landing," said Michael Corcoran, deputy director for air operations at U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine office in Grand Forks. "I guess we'll brag about this one, as well," he said.
The drone is scheduled to begin patrolling the northern U.S. border in January. Its flights will originate from the Grand Forks base.

The regional director of Homeland Security, Customs, and Border Protection was charged today with repeatedly hiring illegal immigrants to clean her Salem home after one cleaner wore a wire during an undercover investigation.
Lorraine Henderson is the director of the Port of Boston, overseeing 190 armed federal officers who patrol major airports and shipping terminals in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
"She’s supposed to be deporting aliens, not hiring them," said Assistant US Attorney Brian T. Kelly, chief of the public corruption unit.
Agents arrested Henderson at her Salem home at 8 a.m. Standing this afternoon in US District Court in Boston, she wore jeans and a gray sweatshirt and did not enter a plea to a charge of encouraging an illegal immigrant to remain in the country. If convicted, she faces as much as 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Wow, I didn't know Borders was having trouble! I go there all the time; in fact, I just came home from the store!!

US-based bookseller Borders has said it is no longer for sale despite reporting widening third-quarter losses.
It posted a net quarterly loss of $175.4m (£113m), or $2.90 per share, as against $161.1m, or $2.74 per share, in the third quarter of last year.
But it said applying a range of restructuring measures in the past year will allow the company to stand on its own despite the downturn.
"We have smiles on our faces," Borders chief executive George Jones said.
Like-for-like sales dropped 12.8% in Borders superstores, with revenue falling to $693m from $765m during the same quarter last year.
The news sent Borders share down 52% in after-hours trading.
The Michigan-based bookseller is still considering selling its stationery business to Pershing Capital Management for $65m.
In March, Borders said it had been evaluating a sale of its core business after facing increasing difficulties in accessing funds.
Since then it has cut staff, sold some business units and dramatically reduced unsold stock.
