The identity of the Poe Toaster is unknown, and the ritual has drawn national attention. For the second straight year, the myserious figure apparently failed to materialize. My experience with the Poe Toaster dates to 1983. I’d heard about the tradition before arriving in Baltimore to attend University of Maryland Baltimore County. The identity of the Poe Toaster is unknown, and the ritual has drawn national... more

About 1,000 black birds fell from the sky over Beebe on Friday night, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said in a news release Saturday. Around 11:30 p.m., the commission began receiving phone calls about the birds, most of which were dead and fell over a 1-mile span, the release said.

Why the Heene family of Colorado thought pretending to lose their son in the basket of an airborne helium balloon was a good idea is unclear. But as they contemplate possible criminal records for conspiracy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, they can at least take comfort in the fact that they have distinguished company when it comes to balloon hoaxes.
On 13 April 1844, the New York Sun published a breathless account of a great step for mankind: "The air, as well as the earth and the ocean, has been subdued by science, and will become a common and convenient highway for mankind . . . The Atlantic has been actually crossed in a balloon . . . and in the inconceivably brief period of 75 hours from shore to shore!"
In a precursor of the reality shows to which the Heenes apparently aspired, the Sun ran excerpts from the faked diary of the Victoria's navigators, which ended just after their "sighting" off the coast of South Carolina. (In reality, the Atlantic would not be crossed by a balloon until 75 years later, when the rather less romantically named British dirigible R-34 landed in New York City after an 108-hour flight.)
The account was cooked up by Edgar Allan Poe, a hoax-lover in an age of hoax-lovers; he perpetrated five others. Poe seems to have rather enjoyed the fuss: "On the morning (Saturday) of its announcement," he later wrote in the Columbia Spy, "the whole square surrounding the Sun building was literally besieged, blocked up from a period soon after sunrise until about two o'clock PM . . . I never witnessed more intense excitement to get possession of a newspaper. . . I tried, in vain, during the whole day, to get possession of a copy."Why the Heene family of Colorado thought pretending to lose their son in the basket of... more

Edgar Allan Poe is about to get a proper funeral, 160 years after his death and burial in Baltimore.
When the great Gothic poet and mystery writer was buried a pauper, only 10 mourners showed up. To rectify such a slight, several hundred people have snapped up tickets to two grand funeral services Sunday at the Westminster Burying Ground, where Poe rests, the Associated Press reports.
Fans are traveling from as far away as Vietnam to pay tribute to the author of such classics works as The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Fall of the House of Usher.
But don't expect a Halloween parade of his skeletal remains.
Tomorrow, the anniversary of Poe's death in 1849, a replica of his 40-year-old corpse will lie in repose at the Poe House for 12 hours, followed by an all-night vigil at his grave. All comers can deliver their tributes.
Come Sunday morning, a horse-drawn carriage will take the corpse from his former home to the graveyard for the two sold-out, 350-mourner services. The master of ceremonies is well known to a certain generation — Gomez Addams (a.k.a. John Astin), the patriarch of the creepy, kooky, ooky Addams Family TV show.
"It's sort of a way of saying, 'Well, Eddie, your first funeral wasn't a very good one, but we're going to try to make it up to you, because we have so much respect for you,'" said Astin, who performed a one-man Poe show for years.Edgar Allan Poe is about to get a proper funeral, 160 years after his death and burial... more

Every year at meetings weary, experts ponder fame and theory, over many a quaint and curious request for honor on a stamp.
Who should they pick for honored postage: arts or science, famed youth or great age?
The answer's here. The coming year will feature a man of mystery.
Writer Edgar Allan Poe will be featured on a U.S. postage stamp early in 2009, the U.S. Postal Service said Thursday.
The 42-cent stamp will mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of poet and mystery writer Poe and will be issued Jan. 16 in Richmond, Va.
The Poe stamp is one of several issues for early in 2009 announced by the post office.
Other new postage announced included commemorative stamps marking Alaska and Oregon statehood, lunar new year — the year of the Ox — and a postal card marking the bicentennial of Miami University of Ohio.
Also announced was a set of stamps honoring a dozen civil rights leaders, which will go on sale Feb. 12 with ceremonies in New York. Included in that set are:
_ Mary Church Terrell, 1863-1954, advocate for racial justice and women's rights in America and abroad.
_ Mary White Ovington, 1865-1951, journalist and social worker, a founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
_ J. R. Clifford, 1848-1933, the first black attorney licensed in West Virginia; attacked racial discrimination in education.
_ Joel Elias Spingarn, 1875-1939, endowed the Spingarn Medal, awarded annually since 1915, to highlight black achievement.
_ Oswald Garrison Villard, 1872-1949, one of the founders of the NAACP and wrote the "Call" leading to its formation.
_ Daisy Gatson Bates, 1914-1999, mentored nine black students who enrolled at all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957.
_ Charles Hamilton Houston, 1895-1950, lawyer and educator and a main architect of the civil rights movement.
_ Walter White, 1893-1955, a leader of the NAACP who made daring undercover investigations.
_ Medgar Evers, 1925-1963, NAACP official in Mississippi until his assassination in 1963.
_ Fannie Lou Hamer, 1917-1977, a Mississippi sharecropper who fought for black voting rights.
_ Ella Baker, 1903-1986, a skillful organizer who encouraged women and young people to assume positions of leadership in the civil rights movement.

We’re coming up on the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s 1849 death, which is rather fitting since we’re coming up on Halloween. I know; Poe was more than the Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven, but undoubtedly he is best known for his chilling tales. But I thought we’d delve a little deeper into Mr. Poe to celebrate his upcoming deathday. I somehow think he would prefer that people celebrated that instead of his birthday anyway.
