The protests in Myanmar started about a month ago after the military government instituted drastic increases in the price of gas. At one of the protests, soldiers fired over the heads of a group of monks who were participating. Myanmar is devoutly Buddhist, so the action against the monks changed the focus of the protests to be against the government in general, although the monks were careful to keep the tone of events peaceful and religious rather than political. The demonstrations today were the biggest the country has seen in almost 20 years - since the military killed tons of people in a crackdown in 1988 (some say hundreds were killed, other reports indicate it could have been thousands). So far, there has not been a violent response from the government, but that is always a possibility. The protests in Myanmar started about a month ago after the military government... more

The NATO run International Security Assistance Force freed 2 Italian soldiers who were kidnapped in western Afghanistan on Saturday, but not without a lot of shooting that killed all their captors (up to nine) and left the two soldiers injured, one seriously. But, I suppose injured and free is better than healthy but in captivity. Later in the day, in the same region, an explosion hit a Spanish convoy, killing 2 soldiers and wounding 2 more. The NATO run International Security Assistance Force freed 2 Italian soldiers who were... more

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has demanded that the U.S. release an Iranian taken into custody on Thursday. Talabani says the man was part of a commercial delegation that the government was aware of and had given permission to be in the country, while the U.S. says the man is suspected of smuggling roadside bombs and foreign terrorists into Iraq. Iran is threatening to close it's borders with Iraq in response to the detention, raising trade concerns during the Ramadan month. It's confusing when the things the U.S. seems to want for Iraq (ie: from most reports, it seems closing the borders between Iraq and Iran would be a good thing to stop the flow of weapons/insurgents) turn out to be things that Iraq doesn't actually want. Maybe that's why our soldiers are still under fire constantly.Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has demanded that the U.S. release an Iranian taken... more

Mattel is making history, folks! For the first time in recalls-from-China history, the company that issued the recall of goods manufactured in China has now admitted that there was a design flaw in the recalled toys that was their own fault, not that of their Chinese manufacturers. Mattel has now apologized to the "Chinese people", which sounds a bit dramatic, but which is fitting the historic nature of these events.Mattel is making history, folks! After months of deliberation, Chile's Supreme Court decided to allow the extradition of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori. Fujimori will be tried on charges of human rights abuses and corruption during his time in power throughout the 1990's.
Human rights adcovates are saying the Court's decision sets an important international precedent for extradition cases of former heads of state wanted for atrocities in other countries by allowing requests to go directly to the courts, rather than through mediators or governments. After months of deliberation, Chile's Supreme Court decided to allow the... more

According to the 2nd in command of U.S. forces in Iraq, violence levels are down to where they were before the bombing of a mosque in 2006 that triggered sectarian killings. But, Lieutenant General Raymond Odierno acknowledged that civilians were still dying at too high a rate.
Um, thanks Captain Obvious. Last I checked, anyone dying should be considered too high a rate. This is starting to feel like one of those situations where we've gotten used to things being so horrendous that when they're only really terrible, that's considered a good thing. I can't wait til we get back to the point where the good news we get out of Iraq is that things are actually good, rather than that they're not as bad as they've been.According to the 2nd in command of U.S. forces in Iraq, violence levels are down to... more

First, Al Qaeda's number 2 guy lets loose an 80 minute documentary style video saying the U.S. is losing in Afghanistan, Iraq, and pretty much everywhere we face al Qaeda. The video starts with audio of Mohammad Atta from American Airlines Flight 11, the first to crash into the World Trade Center, saying that everything would be ok (I think he and I have different definitions of "ok").
But wait, there's more! Banners on the site where Ayman al-Zawahri's vid was released promise a new vid from the top dog himself. Be on the lookout for a new message from Osama bin Laden, declaring war on Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf and the Pakistani Army. Sounds like it's not a good time to plan a visit to Pakistan.First, Al Qaeda's number 2 guy lets loose an 80 minute documentary style video... more

Almost 3 weeks ago, I put up a posting about how Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf had agreed in talks with exiled Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto to give up his post as General of the Army. Now, according to a government lawyer, he's revising that statement just a bit. Musharraf is now saying he'll give up his army ties only after being re-elected President (but before being sworn in). He's seeking another 5 year term in an election on October 15th, with his current term set to end on 11/15.
Cutting his ties to the military removes a major objection to his proposed re-election, but he still faces a bunch of other legal challenges - a panel of judges took up 6 petitions aiming to disqualify him as a candidate yesterday.Almost 3 weeks ago, I put up a posting about how Pakistan's President Pervez... more

Germany extended 34 million euros ($46.48 million) in financial aid to Syria on Tuesday, marking an improvement in ties after two years of strain, Syrian officials said.
The package, which is divided between a soft loan and grants for infrastructure and development projects, is the first such German aid to Syria since the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri in Beirut, they said.Germany extended 34 million euros ($46.48 million) in financial aid to Syria on... more
