According to this story, most, if not all, military contractors will leave Iraq if this new law is passed. Contractors do not want their men subject to arrest by the Iraqi police or military which they feel is corrupted by the "enemy". US personnel believe this will be a huge blow to our efforts, but it is pointed out that this may be the first time the Iraqi Parliament will pass something they can all agree on. Sounds like progress to me. What do you think?According to this story, most, if not all, military contractors will leave Iraq if... more

According to the AP, Turkish helicopters bombed abandoned villages inside Iraq (though why destroying abandoned villages helps against the PKK rebels is unclear to me). 4 Turkish soldiers were killed in a clash today, taking the toll of Turkish troops killed since September about 50.

Former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto was formally arrested Friday and served with a three-day detention order after she attempted to slip past a security cordon around her residence to attend a protest rally in adjacent Rawalpindi.
'She had attempted to escape with her secretary Naheed Khan but was spotted by some policemen and was again sent back to her residence,' a police official told reporters, adding that now she had been 'formally arrested'.
Earlier Friday, Bhutto was confined to her residence but was not served a detention order. After this was done, police blocked off Bhutto's Zardari House and declared it a sub-jail.

The military announced the deaths of 5 more soldiers today, killed by IEDs in 2 separate incidents.
So, with almost 2 full months left in this year, 2007 has already become the deadliest year in Iraq for U.S. soldiers, even with the sharp drop in deaths in October (39 soldiers died, as compared with 65 in September and 84 in August).
The total killed so far in 2007: at least 852. That's just this year.
And that's just Americans. There've been about 19 Iraqis killed for every American that has lost their life.
It breaks my heart. The military announced the deaths of 5 more soldiers today, killed by IEDs in 2... more

Rice, speaking to reporters on a Mideast trip, said the U.S. will review aid to Pakistan, but indicated it would not suspend aid wholesale.
The U.S. has provided about $11 billion to Pakistan since 2001, when Musharraf allied his presidency with Washington after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
"Some of the aid that goes to Pakistan is directly related to the counterterrorism mission," Rice said. "We just have to review the situation. But I would be very surprised if anyone wants the president to ignore or set aside our concerns about terrorism."
The secretary, who said she had not spoken directly with Musharraf since the crackdown, denied charges that the Bush administration has "put all its chips" on Musharraf.
She also decried Musharraf's "extraconstitutional moves," including suspending the constitution, ousting the country's top judge and deploying troops to fight what he called rising Islamic extremists.
"I'm disappointed in his decision, sure," Rice said. "I think his decision sets Pakistan back in the considerable progress it made toward democratic change."
