Watch out Ellen MacArthur there is a new kid in town. Jessica Watson set sail on 18 October 2009 in her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo non-stop and unassisted around the world.
I have enormous respect for her already. Simply getting to the start line is an staggering feat of endurance. On the day Brit 17-year-old Mike Perham became the world's youngest person ever to sail around the globe single-handedly, an even younger whipper-snapper from Holland has announced she wants to steal Mike's crown and try a bit of single-handed circumnavigation herself.
13-year-old Laura Dekker's wish to sail around the world on her own has whipped up a storm of controversy - and a legal battle - in Holland. Concerned that Laura's parents support her marathon voyage, the country's Social Services have asked the courts to grant them custody of her.
Laura's lawyer, however, argues that she won't be alone for longer than three weeks at a time during the whole voyage, saying this should suffice for her to be allowed to attempt the challenge.

An attempt to set off a world record 110,000 fireworks in under 60 seconds failed miserably in Bournemouth. Instead of going off as planned, the barge carrying the fireworks appeared to blow up and burst into flames.
No rockets shot into the skies and just six seconds in, the whole thing crashed and burned. Around 175,000 who had turned up to watch the Roar on the Shore left disappointed and faced severe delays in getting home.
Ruth Downing took some pleasure in seeing the flaming barge: "It looked like the barge just exploded and then caught fire. It was very disappointing not so much a roar as a growl. We thought it would be rockets exploding in the sky in this amazing fireworks display, but instead if you blinked you would have missed it. It was just a big bang, a blinding flash and then flames. That was probably the most exciting bit because it looked like the barge was on fire."

Poor Efel the pet chicken needed a bit of egging on for her latest effort. It took her a week of preparation and half an hour of pushing before she could unleash her creation on the world: an egg three times the size of a regular egg and one of the biggest ever recorded.
Her owner, 11-year-old Gabrielle Needler, from Reigate, Surrey, was shocked when she saw the egg in the coop. She said: 'Efel didn't lay for a week and we wondered why. Then she laid this massive egg so she was obviously saving it all up. It took her half an hour to lay this one - normally it only takes about five minutes.'
The egg weighed in at 194 grammes, or about 7oz. The family have written to Guinness to see if it is a record breaker, but have since learned that the biggest ever recorded was an egg-tastic 340grams, from an English hen in 1896.
Gabrielle's mother, Kim, said: 'I can only imagine it was a giant hen - or the poor girl must have suffered horribly. I reckon ours must at least be the biggest in the country for a century. Gabrielle is so proud she won't let anyone else hold it.'
Gabrielle plans to blow out the yolk for a giant fried egg then decorate the shell.Poor Efel the pet chicken needed a bit of egging on for her latest effort. It took... more

A man has survived plunging 55 metres over the Niagara Falls, becoming the second person in over 100 years to live after going over the edge with no protective gear.
Said to be distraught, he jumped into the rapids above The Horseshoe Falls, one of Niagara's three waterfalls, and after surviving the impact, resisted rescuer's attempts to help him by swimming away from them and climbing out of a sling dropped by a helicopter.
"He was on a suicide mission, I assume," said Mr Hafen, the pilot. "I've never, in my career, seen someone so tough, swimming between the ice."
The man's now in a critical condition in Niagara Falls hospital, with hypothermia and a head injury.A man has survived plunging 55 metres over the Niagara Falls, becoming the second... more

Reporting from Washington -- For vast swaths of Americans, election day has already come and gone thanks to a record level of early voting -- a big transformation of the way Americans exercise their most fundamental right as citizens. In three swing states -- North Carolina, New Mexico and Colorado -- the number of voters who have already cast their ballots has reached more than 70% of the number who voted there in 2004.
That may represent the beginning of a tidal wave of voting participation that could match or break a record set a century ago, when two-thirds of eligible voters went to the polls for the 1908 presidential election.
The influx in many places seems to be favoring Obama, as Democratic early voters outnumber Republicans in all but one state that keeps track of party affiliation, according to data compiled by the U.S. Elections Project at George Mason University.
Michael P. McDonald, director of the project, predicts that some 30% of all ballots this year will be cast before election day. That would be up from 20% in 2004 and from 7% in 1992.
"These early numbers are startling, far outpacing what would be expected at this stage in the election," said McDonald.
It remains to be seen whether the wave of early voters portends a big increase in final turnout figures. But analysts see signs that it will. The number of voters registered nationwide increased about 2.5% to include 73.5% of the eligible population -- the highest level at least since women won the right to vote in 1920, according to an estimate by the Center for the Study of the American Electorate.
"The level of voter enthusiasm and excitement indicates that this is a 100-year storm of elections," said Paul Gronke, director of the Early Voting Information Center at Reed College in Portland, Ore."

And who said you needed professional equipment to catch a whopper.
David Hayes expected a chilled out day fishing with his 3-year-old granddaughter Alyssa, maybe catching a few tiddlers and then heading home, but oh how wrong he was.
When Alyssa asked Grandad to hold her rod whilst she nipped to the little girl' room, he thought little of it, until as he so expertly put it: "the cat hit the cricket and took off."
When his granddaughter returned to see him clutching her 2.5ft pink Barbie rod bent over double she thought the rod was about to snap, but the Barbie fishing gear stood the test of time and after 25 minutes he netted a record breaking 21 lbs,1oz catfish, 3lbs over the existing record and measuring 2inches longer than the rod itself.
