Dear Keith,
I am writing in regard to the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007, which has been passed in the House and is now under consideration in the Senate. I find the language of this bill to be highly troubling considering on the vague definitions and broad findings. For example:
"(3) HOMEGROWN TERRORISM- The term `homegrown terrorism' means the use, planned use, or threatened use, of force or violence by a group or individual born, raised, or based and operating primarily within the United States or any possession of the United States to intimidate or coerce the United States government, the civilian population of the United States, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives."
I find the distinction "force or violence", to be extremely chilling considering that if we look at the dictionary definitions of force that do not include violence we find this:
"mental or moral strength or power"
This bill simply cannot be dismissed as creating a benign commission considering the track record of previous Congressional witch-hunts, the vagueness of the definitions and findings in this bill, and the intellectual dishonesty exhibited by the expert testimony solicited by the house committee that crafted this bill. Experts such as Mark Weitzman who made the case to Congress that groups such as Architects and Engineers for 9-11 Truth should be lumped in with Al-Qaida websites and be equally considered the target of this bill for such subversive activities as questioning the official government reports and demanding an independent investigation. Regardless of one's opinion on the 9-11 truth movement and the veracity of their claims, they should not be lumped in with terrorists seeking to bring down the country through violent means.
While I do realize that this act in and of itself does not carry any immediate legislative danger do our civil liberties, it is not a door I wish to be opened as I believe it will do nothing to curtail real terrorist threats and will primarily serve as a mechanism for marginalizing critics and stifling free speech in general.
I would highly appreciate it if you could help illuminate the public to the dangers posed by this bill and end the media blackout on its progress in the Senate.
Sincerely,
Me

The Senate Intelligence Committee has released the long-delayed final phase of its report on prewar intelligence, highlighting the Bush administration's misuse of that intelligence to lead us into war in Iraq. Richard Clarke, former counterterrorism advisor to both the Clinton and Bush administrations, appeared on Countdown with Keith Olbermann to discuss the implications of the report.
Clarke stated unequivocally that figures in the administration lied then and that Senator John McCain is not telling the truth now when he defends them. "Someone should have to pay in some way," Clarke emphasized. "I just don't think we can let these people back into polite society."
"The report does not use the word 'lie,' Olbermann began. "Are there lies?"
"There certainly are," Clarke replied. "This is a big report, but what it says is 'statements by the president were not substantiated by intelligence ... statements by the president were contradicted by available intelligence. In other words, they made things up ... that people in the intelligence community at the time knew were not true. ... To say that this is only something we could have known years later is just not true."
"What are we to make now of Senator McCain's ... remarkable claim that every intel assessment of the time was screaming 'WMD'?" asked Olbermann.
"Senator McCain's statements are contradicted by the facts, too," Clarke replied firmly. "He's also now justifying the intelligence statements of the president. ... We have the proof, four years too late, that those statements were flat out wrong."
"Prominent Democrats said today that impeachment was not a remedy to this," Olbermann continued. "Is there some other kind of remedy?"
"There may be some sort of truth and reconciliation commission process," Clarke said, referring to the system used in South Africa to expose and resolve the atrocities of the apartheid era. "If you come forward and admit that you were in error ... then you are forgiven. Otherwise, you are censured in some way."
"I just don't think we can let these people back into polite society," continued Clarke, "and give them seats on university boards and corporate boards and just pretend that nothing ever happened, when there are 4000 American dead and 25,000 Americans grievously wounded. ... Someone should have to pay in some way for the decisions that they made to mislead the American people."
Clarke concluded by pointing out that even former White House press secretary Scott McClellan is now expressing remorse for his role in the administration's deceptions. "He asked me to forgive him, and I think we do have to forgive people who ask for forgiveness," Clarke stated. "But first they have to admit they lied."

On "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" Thursday Scott McClellan sat down for a nearly hour-long interview with the MSNBC host to discuss his new book, "What Happened". The wide-ranging interview covered everything from the CIA leak to Fox News to McClellan's critics to the possibility of military action in Iran.
Towards the beginning of the interview Olbermann noted a passage in McClellan's book where he says Bush's foreign policy view was grounded in a "philosophy of coercive democracy." Olbermann noted, "it's a marvelous phrase, but is it an oxymoron?" McClellan said it was:
"[C]ertainly those [policies] have tarnished the reputation of the United States in a very negative way. And I think that has been harmful over the long term. But in terms of the coercive democracy, that was -- and you bring up a very good point about the oxymoron there -- but that was always the strategy for going into Iraq in first place. And I think that is what really drove the president's motivation to push ahead and rush into this. When I think that there were probably other options -- there were definitely other options available to him. He didn't have to box himself in. But when he went to the United Nations he said, either he disarms and the U.N. -- if he doesn't, then the U.N. goes in, or the security council authorizes it, or we will do it ourselves."On "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" Thursday Scott McClellan sat down for a... more

My favorite part:
"When you boil it all down, in determining the Democratic Party‘s presidential nominee, only one vote really matters. The 50-something conservative registered Democrat who‘s not independent but not a part of the base, and skipped college so they can go straight into teaching rather than become a casino worker, who votes on domestic issues but not in the primary or caucus and in a big state that doesn‘t border Illinois, that has elected female governors and members of Congress, but didn‘t vote Republican in 2004, won‘t vote Republican in 2008, and didn‘t vote for Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988 during an all day vote except between the hours of 7:00 and 7:15 p.m. Oh, they don‘t object their vote being overruled by superdelegates."

Last night on "Countdown," Keith Olbermann tore apart President Bush's speech on the economy, fact-checking each claim and dismantling Bush's case point-by-point. It was reminiscent of this clip from February, where Keith presented a detailed timeline of the Bush administration's political exploitation of the terror threat.

Suggests Cheney, Rice, Powell and other White House officials committed war crimes.
In the 1990s, Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor and constitutional expert, was a strong advocate for impeaching Pres. Bill Clinton because Clinton lied about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky while under oath in a deposition for a civil lawsuit.
The issue today is far more serious. According to ABC News, starting in 2002, senior Bush officials, including Vice President Cheney and Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice, who was then the national security adviser, were involved hands-on in drafting torture guidelines for the CIA. Because torture is illegal under U.S. and international law, Jonathan Turley says he believes the drafting of these guidelines was a war crime. (See video above from MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” on April 10.)
Late Friday afternoon, George Bush confirmed to ABC News that Cheney, Rice and the other officials — including then-Sec. of State Colin Powell, then-Attorney Gen. John Ashcroft, then-Sec. of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, then-CIA Director George Tenet and their aides — were working at his behest.
This new development — the president’s admission that he commissioned alleged war crimes — is being ignored completely on cable news on Saturday. It will be interesting to see if it makes it onto the Sunday political shows, including even ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopolous.”

A Missouri woman who suffered brain damage in a car crash must reimburse Wal-Mart $470,000 for medical expenses because of an insurance settlement.
The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Debbie Shank's appeal. A federal appeals court in St. Louis had found that Shank must repay everything Wal-Mart's insurance plan paid, even though the settlement with the insurer of the truck driver who hit her falls short of that amount.
Shank, 52, now living in a nursing home, was a Wal-Mart employee at the time of the crash.
As if things couldn't get worse for Debbie, her 18 year old son recently died in combat in Iraq. A Missouri woman who suffered brain damage in a car crash must reimburse Wal-Mart... more

Yesterday, Keith Olbermann heatedly assailed Hillary Clinton during a "Special Comment " segment on his television program, accusing her of passively sanctioning an increase of events in her political campaign that have emitted racist attitudes. He argued that more and more people are coming to see a pattern of racist remarks connected with her, that "False or true, they see it."

First time targeting a Democrat - - On last night's "Countdown," Keith Olbermann announced that tonight he'd be delivering another of his "Special Comments" — his impassioned, angry monologues fueled by outrage and usually addressed to President Bush and the Bush administration. Tonight, his special comment will be directed at Hillary Clinton — and, for the first time, his special comment will be directed exclusively at a Democrat.
