Former US vice-president Al Gore has hit out at Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, accusing it of "an abuse of power" by forcing his liberal TV station off air in Italy because it did not fit in with the media giant's "ideological agenda".
In an interview with the Guardian, Gore said the Current TV news and documentary channel was told unexpectedly three weeks ago that it could no longer be carried by Sky Italia because of its decision to hire a US left-leaning commentator often critical of Murdoch's company.
He added that the decision reflected how News Corporation operated worldwide. "News Corporation is an international conglomerate with an ideological agenda. It seeks political power in every nation they operate. They wield that power to shut down voices that disagree with the agenda of Rupert Murdoch," Gore said.
The decision, he added, was "a complete shock" but Current TV executives were told "off the record that the decision was taken on News Corp instructions from New York". The primary reason, he said, was "because Current is launching Keith Olbermann next month".
Olbermann – who styles himself as a leftwing alternative to the rightwing shock jock journalism of Fox News – worked at rival cable news network MSNBC until he left abruptly in January. This came after he was briefly suspended by MSNBC in November for making donations to three Democratic candidates in the midterm elections without seeking prior approval, in breach of company rules. "Olbermann has often been critical of News Corporation," Gore added.

ESPN wasn't truly the worldwide leader in sports until Keith Olbermann came along. Brilliant, combustible, and allergic to authority, he revolutionized its flagship program—and started a countdown clock for his ugly exit the moment he walked in the door. An exclusive excerpt from a new ESPN oral history
by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales Illustration by Ward Sutton
Have Keith Theodore Olbermann spend a few seasons working at your television network and see how you feel. Sort of like Kansas after a twister. If Olbermann hadn't been so brilliant and talented, few would have put up with him. But Olbermann has a talent that can't be taught. He can relate to people on the other side of the camera and, indeed, relate to the camera itself in a way that comes across as second nature. And yet he once told an interviewer that on some level, he's always making fun of television: "Like, 'Look how ridiculous this is, me sitting here and you sitting on the other end, watching me—what are you doing that for?' I think that's always been my attitude." Olbermann agreed to come to ESPN in the spring of 1992 as an anchor for the 11 p.m. SportsCenter. In the last year of his contract with KCBS Los Angeles—which the station chose not to renew—he had been making $475,000. His starting salary in Bristol would be just over $150,000.

When I was at CNN, we used to look at ESPN as our comic relief, because for a long time, in terms of sports news, CNN was a ten-times-better product than ESPN. I used to look at my old friend [Chris] Berman sweating away in the studio without a teleprompter, trying to read his notes. I thought, Thank God that there's somebody on the air in worse shape than we are. And then I finally figured out how they survived for nearly a decade with no funding: They were in the middle of nowhere. Across the street was a McDonald's, what was always reputed to be a toxic-waste area, and cows. So unless you're a freelance dairyman, there was no place else to go.

THIS IS A SPECIAL COMMENT FROM KEITH OLBERMANN ON THE DEATH OF OSAMA BIN LADEN.
President Obama announced late Sunday that the al-Qaida leader was killed by U.S. special forces in a firefight inside Pakistan, and that U.S. officials have possession of the body.
“On nights like this one we can say that justice has been done,” Obama said in a late-night address to the nation.
The attack was carried out earlier Sunday, reportedly by Joint Special Operations Command forces working with the CIA. No U.S. forces were killed during the operation.
The White House alerted media officials late Sunday night that Obama would be making an announcement later that night dealing with national security. The news that Bin Laden had been killed broke shortly thereafter, prior to the president’s remarks.
Cheering crowds gathered outside the White House to celebrate the death of the man responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks. Similar celebrations reportedly broke out in other parts of the nation, including in New York City.http://bcove.me/mcjwz6z0

Current TV says Keith Olbermann will return to the air on June 20.
Current said Tuesday the title of the weeknight news-commentary hour will be "Countdown with Keith Olbermann." "Countdown" was the name of the program Olbermann hosted on MSNBC until his heated departure from that network in January.
Less than a month later, he signed with Current TV, the public affairs channel launched in 2005 by former Vice President Al Gore and Joel Hyatt.
A liberal lightning rod, Olbermann has often clashed with his former bosses and with the corporate culture of General Electric, until recently MSNBC's majority owner. By contrast, Current bills itself as America's only independent news and information TV network.
Current is available in 60 million households in the U.S.

Where is Keith Olbermann?? I get tired of TV personalities who want to be in the fight for the future of this nation who then disappear when they are needed. Keith, we miss your voice, we need your voice. Get the heck on the air now not in June. Tell Current if they want to be taken seriously they need to get in the fight now. And PLEASE when you write future contracts cross out that section that says you have to be off the air until such and such a date. We need smart people to just say to the TV networks I'm either on the air or not. If on fine, if not then I am free to walk to someone who will put me on the next day and not have to wait until a year later to get back in the fight. The issues, the country, is too important for smart voices to be sidelined by silly clauses in contracts. We needed your voice in Wisconsin, we needed your voice in the defense of unions, in defense of Medicare and Medicaid So tell Current to prempt whatever silly rerun is on at 5PM and get you on the air.
If other agree with this please write current TV and let's get something started here.Where is Keith Olbermann?? I get tired of TV personalities who want to be in the fight... more
