Memphis, Tennessee -- The King of Rock ‘n Roll paid a visit to Graceland on the 34th anniversary of his death, bringing with him some advice for America’s current top pop star, Lady Gaga.
“I’m making more in a day as a ghost than most performers earn in a lifetime,” Elvis told a wide-eyed group of visitors to Graceland who were taking the 3:15 tour. “So I know a thing or two about pleasing the crowd and keeping every body happy over the long haul.”
Presley began with what he called his most important recommendation, advising Lady Gaga to stay true to her musical roots.
“In her case, that means singing, dancing, and even dressing like Madonna,” Presley said.
“My mama used to tell me that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” Elvis continued. “And as all those Elvis impersonators out there have shown, there can be big bucks in in it as well.”
The King of Rock proposed to the Queen of Schlock that she more carefully study videotapes of Madonna concerts and television appearances.
“Gaga goes off the rails when she tries to channel her inner originality,” Presley said. “My tip here is: don’t try to change the channel, honey, because that station is off the air.”
Asked his opinion of Lady Gaga’s singing ability, Elvis replied: “It’s nothing that cranking up the Autotune dial a few more notches wouldn’t fix. In my day, we didn’t have Autotune. We had talent.”
Elvis did praise Lady Gaga’s skills as a “note bandit,” capable of appropriating the right tune at the right time. “She knows a good song when she steals one.”
Before disappearing into the ether, Elvis provided his view on Lady Gaga’s publicity stunts. “That meat dress got her some attention. Who doesn’t like a rare skirt steak? But what is she going to do for an encore? I suggest a peanut butter and banana sandwich dress. Gaga can play the part of the white bread.”Memphis, Tennessee -- The King of Rock ‘n Roll paid a visit to Graceland on the... more

The Republicans won control of the House and picked up seats in the Senate in the midterm election on nebulous promises to slash spending and reduce the size of the federal government. House Speaker John Boehner has pledged to reduce spending to 2008 levels, as per the GOP’s campaign manifesto, known as the “Pledge to America.”
But as Andy Kroll reports in Mother Jones, while the Pledge calls for a 21.7% reduction in spending on non-security discretionary programs, it doesn’t commit to any specific cuts. Medicare and Social Security are safe from this round of cuts because they are not discretionary.
The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities tried to give a glimpse of what the federal government might look like if all eligible agencies took a 21.7% budget cut across the board. As Kroll notes, it’s more likely that some programs will be spared, some trimmed, and some eliminated entirely.
However, the CBPP’s analysis gives a stark picture of the magnitude of the proposed cuts, Kroll writes:
What it found was grim, with middle class Americans set to lose the most.
K-12 education funding, the CBPP found, would drop by $8.7 billion, and food stamps for at-risk pregnant women, infants, and young children would lose $1.6 billion in funding. State- and local-run housing programs would lose $6.9 billion, and children and family social services would lose nearly $2.2 billion.
Already pinched state budgets would take massive hits as well, losing out on $31.6 billion in federal funding.
Cuts to state budgets mean even deeper cuts to education and social services that benefit working families. Starving the states is also a strategy to force state governments to default on their pension obligations to unionized public sector workers.
But the magnitude of these cuts might be giving the GOP cold feet. In January, Speaker Boehner told Brian Williams at NBC that he couldn’t name a single program that he planned to cut.
Inequality is personal
Paul Buchheit points out on AlterNet that if middle- and upper middle-class families had the same share of the economic pie that they did in the 1980s, they would be making $12,500 more per year. In other words, the economy has become vastly more productive over the last 30 years, but the extra wealth has become overwhelmingly concentrated in the hands of the very richest Americans at the expense of working families.
U.S. GDP quintupled since the 1980s, but most of the extra wealth has gone to the top 1% of earners. Nobody begrudges entrepreneurs a healthy return on their capital, but what about the 99% of earners who provided the labor. Where’s the return on their investment?
With looming government spending cuts to domestic programs, the middle- and upper-middle classes will face an even bigger hit to their real standard of living. Local and state governments are cutting back on services while hiking taxes and fees.
The richest 1% won’t feel these cuts as acutely as middle class families. If you have your own private swimming pool, you may not notice that the public pool is closed because the city can’t afford lifeguards. If you send your kids to private universities, you won’t be biting your nails over potential tuition hikes at public universities.
MLK’s legacy
The nation honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday. Roger Bybee of Working In These Times points out that, while King is remembered as a civil rights leader, he was also deeply committed to economic justice for all Americans. The politicians who praised King’s legacy on Monday should remember that Dr. King’s last great crusade was on behalf of sanitation workers in Memphis, public employees struggling for a decent standard of living.
Beck sets sights on 78-year-old CUNY prof
Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! interviews Frances Fox Piven, a 78-year-old distinguished professor of political science at the City University of New York, who may be the first person to inadvertently spark prime time conspiracy theory in the pages of a Media Consortium outlet. Right wing talk host Glenn Beck has identified Piven as the co-author of a violent blueprint to crash capitalism itself.
As Piven explains to Goodman, the bile stems from the suggestion made by her and her co-author Richard Cloward in a 1966 article in The Nation that social activists should help poor people access the benefits they were already legally entitled to. At that time, Piven recalls, the welfare system denied benefits to more than half of its eligible recipients. She and Cloward believed that the poor would become a more politically powerful and visible part of society if society suddenly had to make good on its promises of aid.
In July, Richard Kim of The Nation explained how an obscure 40-year-old article was recast as the “Rosetta Stone” of lefty politics, the blueprint to usher in an economic crisis which the left could exploit to bring about socialism.
Since Beck seized on Piven’s work and labeled her a violent revolutionary, she has been the target of death threats by commenters on Beck’s website. Political operatives posing as students came to her home to interview her. The interview later showed up on Andrew Breitbart’s conservative website.
Piven seems both concerned and bemused that her brief for reforming the welfare system of the 1960s has been labeled as a blueprint for destroying the capitalist system.

A controversial Employment Non-Discrimination Ordinance (ENDO) created to protect LGBT people from discrimination when applying for jobs with the city council of Memphis, Tennessee, has been withdrawn – at the request of a local gay rights group.
According to eyewitness news, the group, which is called the Tennesse Equality Project (TEP), requested that councilwoman Janis Fullilove withdraw the ordinance when it "became clear" that it would not get a fair hearing when read before city council.
ENDO was set for three readings in Memphis City Council, but Michelle Bliss, vice-chair for the Shelby County TEP said: "It became very apparent that it was being treated differently, and it became very, very apparent we were not going to get a fair hearing from the majority of the council members."
Local religious leaders had already expressed their views against the ordinance. Bishop Edward Stephens from Golden Gate Cathedral said: "It was a subtle move to desensitise what's taking place as a way to ease in a lifestyle and to cause everyone who's against it to agree with it."
Bishop Stephens also said that he felt the move would have "opened the floodgates", adding, "the ultimate question is where – does all of this end? From here, then to the school[s], to the teachers. Where does this really stop?"
Ms Fullilove expressed her regret at the failure of ENDO bill, which she reportedly claimed was due in part to "closed-minded" council members and lack of support from the Mayor of Memphis, A.C. Wharton.
TEP said that they would bring the issue before the mayor and city council again when they felt the ordinance had a chance of being taken seriously and fairly by the city's leaders.A controversial Employment Non-Discrimination Ordinance (ENDO) created to protect LGBT... more

Alongside the "Memphis Queen" lies a small, but powerful, piece of machinery...
Captain William Lozier started his airboat tours for the people who wanted to get up close and personal with the river. He takes you on a tour of the back channels of the Mississippi River, jumping sand barges and turning donuts. It's more of a thrill ride than anything, but you also catch one of the most unique perspectives of Memphis in the process. Capt. William pilots the Memphis Queen, tow boats, and crew boats, but the airboat fulfills his childhood race car dreams.

It started in 1993 as a way for Eric Friedl (aka Eric Oblivian) to put out some singles, and has grown and mutated ever since. Goner Records has been first on the scene with music from such acts as the Oblivians, Impala, Guitar Wolf, Harlan T. Bobo and many others. It’s original narrow brand of garage punk has expanded to embrace everything from the fractured theatrical pop of the Barbaras to the Aussie rock of Eddie Current Suppression Ring.
In 2003, Eric Friedl and partner Zac Ives took over Greg Cartwright’s (aka Oblivian) Legba Records to create the Goner Record Store, which has become a Cooper-Young institution. 2003 also saw the first Gonerfest, the four-day, fall gathering of the punk and garage faithful from all over the world that, after Gonerfest 2 was immortalized by Live from Memphis, has turned into one of the year’s most-anticipated music festivals. This year's Gonerfest, to be held from September 24-26, is expected to be the biggest yet. Not bad for a bunch of punks.

Alicia Trout’s first band was the Clears, a storied synth pop outfit led by Shelby Bryant (who would, years later, serve as the model for DJ Qualls’ mousy keyboardist in Hustle and Flow). Next up was the Lost Sounds, a seminal Memphis band whose unique sound made an impact that is still being felt, and which launched the career of Jay Reatard. Currently, Trout plays with Mouserocket, the River City Tanlines, and her solo project, Black Sunday.
The one constant of all of those recording projects is the great production that Trout brought to the table, despite the fact that very few of them were recorded in an actual studio. Trout’s production skills have been brought to bear on dozens of albums, including the Reigning Sounds’ Too Much Guitar (much of which was recorded at the Goner Records store). That’s the Memphis DIY ethic in a nutshell: if the resources aren’t available, make music with what you’ve got.
