The most popular article on this site so far has been “this is the way to experience life – 100 goals in 100 weeks”. I have decided to follow Ian Ushers lead and write my list of 10 endurance events I want to complete before I die. So no more excuses, it’s time for me to take action!
And in the process to ask for your help. Can you help me reach any of these goals ? Do you have any of the same ambitions ? Would you like to do one of them together ? Do you have the skills or experience to guide, teach or advise me and help me to reach any of them? I’m keen, hungry and willing to learn. The most popular article on this site so far has been “this is the way to experience... more

Does running a marathon push the body further than it is meant to go?
The conventional wisdom is that distance running leads to debilitating wear and tear, especially on the joints. But that hasn’t stopped runners from flocking to starting lines in record numbers.
Last year in the United States, 425,000 marathoners crossed the finish line, an increase of 20 percent from the beginning of the decade, Running USA says. Next week about 40,000 people will take part in the New York City Marathon. Injury rates have also climbed, with some studies reporting that 90 percent of those who train for the 26.2-mile race sustain injuries in the process.
But now a best-selling book has reframed the debate about the wisdom of distance running. In “Born to Run” (Knopf), Christopher McDougall, an avid runner who had been vexed by injuries, explores the world of the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico, a tribe known for running extraordinary distances in nothing but thin-soled sandals.
Mr. McDougall makes the case that running isn’t inherently risky. Instead, he argues that the commercialization of urban marathons encourages overzealous training, while the promotion of high-tech shoes has led to poor running form and a rash of injuries.
Marathon running is not easy at the best of times. Running a marathon every day for 99 days is mindblowing. Throw in running barefoot and you have a distance running challenge of epic proportions. This video is about Tellman Knudson, a novice ultra marathon runner who is 33 days into a 99 day barefoot run across continental america. Hats off to the man. I really hope he makes it. He is raising money for homeless youth so please support him.

Cheetahs are the fastest land mammal! Capable of reaching speeds in excess of 70mph they are an amazing animal, unfortunately we are not working fast enough to save them in the wild. It is estimated their numbers globally have declined by over 90% in the last 100 years!
Namibia is one of the last refuges of the remaining world Cheetah population. A quarter of all the remaining cats are found in Nambia. A local thorn bush species is invading the savannah in the country, causing over US$90 million each year in lost revenue to Namibian farmers, whilst also destroying the native habitat of the fastest of the cats. Now the Cheetah Conservation Fund has pioneered a scheme to clear the thorn bush and turn it into cheap fuel briquettes. The project is creating jobs at the same time as helping to restore the hunting ground of the endangered cheetah.
It's the latest trend in footwear: barefoot shoes.
Several companies — Vibram, Nike, Terra Plana — are creating shoes that look sort of like gloves for your feet. They're minimalist, with a little pocket for each toe, and they're catching on with a small but passionate community of runners who shun fancy, highly-engineered shoes and prefer to run as our shoeless ancestors did.
Guy Raz tried out a pair of Vibram's "FiveFingers" shoes on the National Mall, a popular jogging spot in Washington, D.C.
Tourists stared in amusement as Raz ran down the gravel path, dressed in his work suit and a bright blue pair of FiveFingers shoes, chased by a producer carrying a big, fuzzy microphone.
"It actually feels pretty good running in these barefoot shoes," Raz reports. "It almost feels like my feet know what to do intuitively."It's the latest trend in footwear: barefoot shoes.

...but there has to be some kind of economic incentive; companies would have to incorporate it into their practice somehow. Let's say a company has 500 people, and every day 400 of them spend at least 30 minutes on the hypothetical power generating machines (machines which, when combined, generate even more electricity, the way a supercomputer brings together smaller components to do big tasks). that would create how much electricity? companies who give back substantial power to the grid would be rewarded with tax breaks. Individuals with both mental and physical skills would be favored over those with only physical or only mental attributes. Natural Selection restored. Health would be all encompassing and self-bolstering, from individual to company to grid......but there has to be some kind of economic incentive; companies would have to... more
Kelly Gneiting, a 430lb rig-driving 'gentle giant' from Rigby, Idaho, set out on a clear direction 6 years ago: To become the most feared and respected heavyweight sumo wrestler in the United States. Mission accomplished. Kelly has won the US Sumo Championship every year since 2004 and some feel he could very well be one of the best in the world if he continues to train.
Earlier last year, however, his warrior confidence may have gone to his head. Noticing that his trucking route (and yes, he does haul potatoes) took him through Los Angeles at the very time the LA Marathon was taking place, he did the only thing an overly-confident sumo champ would do - he registered and ran.
Never having run more than 7 miles in his entire life, Kelly shifts gears and digs deep to find the heart and courage it will take to complete the 26.2 mile jog. Will he run out of gas, or fulfill his dream of finishing a marathon?Kelly Gneiting, a 430lb rig-driving 'gentle giant' from Rigby, Idaho, set out on a... more

Although Usain Bolt may have hit the sporting headlines as the world's fastest man, Savannah Sanitoa is not standing in the shadows. The 90kg shot putter competed in the World Championships in Berlin, not with her traditional sport, but in the 100m sprint.
She failed to make the qualifying distance in the shot putt, but was offered a last minute wildcard place in 100m sprint.
She completed the distance in 14.23 seconds but this still put her ahead of two other competitors.
Just shows that even weighing in at 14st you can still beat people much lighter!Although Usain Bolt may have hit the sporting headlines as the world's fastest man,... more
