Jim Hansen is the 'grandfather of climate change' and one of the world's leading climatologists. In this rare interview in New York, he explains why President Obama's administration is the last chance to avoid flooded cities, species extinction and climate catastrophe
"I have been described as the grandfather of climate change. In fact, I am just a grandfather and I do not want my grandchildren to say that grandpa understood what was happening but didn't make it clear," Hansen said last week. Hence his warning to Barack Obama, who will be inaugurated as US president on Tuesday. His four-year administration offers the world a last chance to get things right, Hansen said. If it fails, global disaster - melted sea caps, flooded cities, species extinctions and spreading deserts - awaits mankind.
"We cannot now afford to put off change any longer. We have to get on a new path within this new administration. We have only four years left for Obama to set an example to the rest of the world. America must take the lead."
After eight years of opposing moves to combat climate change, thanks to the policies of President George Bush, the US had given itself no time for manoeuvre, he said. Only drastic, immediate change can save the day and those changes proposed by Hansen - who appeared in Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth and is a winner of the World Wildlife Fund's top conservation award - are certainly far-reaching. In particular, the idea of continuing with "cap-and-trade" schemes, which allow countries to trade allowances and permits for emitting carbon dioxide, must now be scrapped, he insisted. Such schemes, encouraged by the Kyoto climate treaty, were simply "weak tea" and did not work. "The United States did not sign Kyoto, yet its emissions are not that different from the countries that did sign it."
Thus plans to include carbon trading schemes in talks about future climate agreements were a desperate error, he said. "It's just greenwash. I would rather the forthcoming Copenhagen climate talks fail than we agree to a bad deal," Hansen said.Jim Hansen is the 'grandfather of climate change' and one of the... more

Exodus 16:14-24 indicates that MANNA was definitely a MUSHROOM. It was a small round thing in the morning dew, it bred larva, and would melt to mush if not dried.
Fly's eggs cause larvae/worms in mushrooms. Daniel 5:3-5 with Exodus 16:32 and Hebrews 9:4 indicates that the mushroom was a DRUG. Those who drank from the cup containing MANNA had visions within the hour. Psilocybin takes 30-40 minutes to induce visions.
Hebrews 9:4 makes it clear that MANNA was the most holy thing to Israelites, kept in A POT OF GOLD in the ARK OF THE COVENANT, in the MOST HOLY OF HOLYS. Psalm 78:24-25 calls MANNA FOOD OF ANGELS, just as MAYAN/INCA PRIESTS from Meso-America called it TEONANACATL FOOD OF THE GODS. Coca and Tobacco Leaves found in Pharaohs tombs suggest it was ancestors of Mayan/Inca Priests who brought MUSHROOMS to Egypt.
MANNA is an Egyptian word, not Hebrew or Aramaic, meaning: The BREAD OF GOD. This is what Moses called it in Exodus 16:15. BREAD OF GOD equals: FOOD OF GOD, equals: TEONANACATL.
John 2:6-9 indicates that Jesus made water into wine by boiling mushrooms (Mushroom-Tea), the waterpots were made of stone, not clay, (stone pots were used for cooking, clay pots used for storing water)...
These pots already contained 2-3 firkins of a substance before the pots were filled with water. A "Firkin" is an Old-English measurement meaning a fourth part. Half to three-quarters of fresh mushrooms with water makes a potent tea. Tea is the safest way to consume field mushrooms, killing dangerous bacteria like E. Coli.
In the Atharva Veda, the Hindus called this Tea SOMA. Greeks called mushroom jelly AMBROSIA. Exodus 16:14-24 indicates that MANNA was definitely a MUSHROOM. It was a small round... more

Who would of though that these folks had better sense that the rest of the country.
Arkansas has been the scene of drug reform activism, mainly around marijuana, for several years now. Initiatives making adult marijuana possession offenses the lowest law enforcement priority passed by two-to-one margins in Eureka Springs in 2006 and in the college town of Fayetteville this month. State drug reform groups like the Drug Policy Education Group and its predecessors have also been tilling the ground in the Razorback State. Reform bubbles up in the most surprising places, and these poll results suggest Arkansans may be more receptive than most people imagined.Who would of though that these folks had better sense that the rest of the country.... more

In the light of recent events that have taken place in the state of California, many people have decided that it’s time to take matters into our own hands. We will not sit back and let the rest of the world decide what we can and cannot do in America the Free.
We have borrowed from the Chicano movement and modified their "Day without a Mexican" into "Day without a Gay."
This concept is simple, but makes a huge impact.
On December 10th, 2008 we ask that all people in the LGBT community and all of our supporters call in sick to work and do not attend school. We ask that you do not purchase anything that day. We want California to see how many of us there are, and that there may be a person in their life that they didn’t know was gay.
Please join us. I know, personally, how extremely difficult it can be to come out and be open about yourself. I have overcome my fear, and I hope that all of you are able to as well.
We need to stand strong in California, and around the country. We need those that oppose us to know that we are strong and that we will NEVER GIVE UP.
Join us, and gain your equality. **this is not restricted to California**

While everyone is fighting for the rights of gays in California lets not overlook Arkansas where they have really blown a gasket and not only barred gay marriage but also adoption.
"BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS:
Section 1: Adoption and foster care of minors.
(a) A minor may not be adopted or placed in a foster home if the individual seeking to adopt or to serve as a foster parent is cohabiting with a sexual partner outside of a marriage which is valid under the constitution and laws of this state."
This means that no same-sex couples AND single persons (regardless of sexuality) can adopt. Also, cohabiting couples who do not want to get married for personal reasons (I have many friends who have no desire to formally marry but have been happily cohabiting for over 15 years) can also not adopt because they are not fit to be parents apparently. This coming from the state where homicide is the leading cause of death for children aged 1-14...most of which died due to negligence or violence at the hands of a parent. Arkansas is also above the national average for child abuse and mistreatment....and since there are only about 400 children living in same sex homes in Arkansas, I doubt that they are contributing much to this number.
Arkansas already has three times as many children needing foster care and adoption than it has available families to take them in. So this law will keep hundreds of children from finding the loving parents simple because of bigotry. While everyone is fighting for the rights of gays in California lets not overlook... more

A Guardian article from 1958, headlined An Asian in Arkansas, shows just how much the United States has changed in the past 50 years.
Great gearshifts of history like Barack Obama's election to the US presidency throw up some interesting fragments, half-forgotten memories which suddenly acquire new significance in the light of current events.
Here's a fascinating example of the yellow newspaper cutting variety, sent to the Guardian this week by Jeremy Gunawardena, whose email address suggests he is an academic or administrator at Harvard.
He writes: "In the light of the excitement provoked by the presidential election in the USA, I wonder if you would be interested in re-publishing the article below from the Manchester Guardian of 50 years ago.
"It was written by my father, Charles Gunawardena (sometimes spelled Gunawardene, as below), who was then news editor of the Ceylon Daily News and an International Press Institute Fellow in the USA.
"My father would not have expected, on the basis of his reports from 1958, the complexion of the current US presidential race. I thought your readers might appreciate a voice from the past showing how much, in certain respects, the United States has changed.
"I transcribed this from an old xerox copy of the Manchester Guardian Weekly, June 12 1958."
Using Gunawardena's transcription the Guardian's researchers had no difficulty in tracing the original article in the digital archive.
Here it is, presenting what is in many ways a more nuanced and complex picture of race relations in the 1950s – both in the segregated American south and in Britain.
As an educated foreigner ("you are like us") the journalist is treated more courteously by whites than was usually the case for non-white locals, including educated ones. But the now-familiar sense of hurt is all too evident.

WASHINGTON — Federal agents have broken up a plot to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and shoot or decapitate 102 black people in a Tennessee murder spree, the ATF said Monday.
In court records unsealed Monday, federal agents said they disrupted plans to rob a gun store and target a predominantly African-American high school by two neo-Nazi skinheads. Agents said the skinheads did not identify the school by name.
Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the two men planned to shoot 88 black people and decapitate another 14. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.
The men also sought to go on a national killing spree, with Obama as its final target, Cavanaugh told The Associated Press.
"They said that would be their last, final act _ that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama," Cavanaugh said. "They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying."
An Obama spokeswoman traveling with the senator in Pennsylvania had no immediate comment.
The men, Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of West Helena, Ark., are being held without bond. Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.
Attorney Joe Byrd, who has been hired to represent Cowart, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.
Cowart and Schlesselman are charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms from a federally licensed gun dealer, and threatening a candidate for president.
The investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible, Cavanaugh said.

An Arkansas television anchorwoman died Saturday, several days after she didn't answer her wake-up call and was found beaten in her home, hospital officials said.
Anne Pressly, 26, died at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Margaret Preston said.
In a statement released by the hospital, Pressly's parents, Guy and Patti Cannady, asked for privacy as they grieved.
"It was our hope, as was yours, that Anne would overcome the injuries inflicted upon her in the brutal attack at her home," the statement read. "We were with her in her last moments, and although our hearts are broken, we are at the same time comforted by our faith knowing that Anne is now with our heavenly father."
Pressly was beaten around the head, face and neck. She had been unable to communicate with her family or police while being kept sedated in the intensive care unit.
The anchor's death came only a day after a doctor said he was encouraged that her vital signs were stable while she remained in critical condition. Dr. Clifton R. Johnson told reporters Friday that swelling in Pressly's brain had gone down since being hospitalized and that doctors had slowly been reducing her sedative dosages.

Lorri Rye, 35-year-old mother from Van Buren, Arkansas was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Gary R. Cottrell to 10 years in prison and a consecutive 10-year suspended sentence after being convicted by a jury of raping her three-year-old son.
Rye's conviction relied upon her videotaped confession to Van Buren Sgt. Daniel Perry and former Detective Keith Lindley.
Rye will register as a sex offender once released from prison. While serving the 10-year suspended tag-along sentence, Rye will be prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with her son. The jury wanted to make sure that the boy was at least 18 before Rye had unrestricted access to him. As a minimum, Rye will have to serve seven years of her prison term before she is eligible for parole.
Helen Hawthorne, who was the child's baby-sitter and is Rye's sister-in-law, testified that in October 2007, the child had asked if she wanted to play a game, and when she agreed, he asked if she wanted to perform sexual acts on him, including putting his genitals in her mouth.
Hawthorne told Chief Deputy Prosecutor Robert Presley she said, "I don't do that," to which she said the boy replied, "Well, Mommy does."
The next day was the child's fourth birthday, and Hawthorne said she agonized over what to do before going to police the day after his birthday because she didn't want to "destroy" his birthday.
The same day Hawthorne went to police, Oct. 19, 2007, Rye was brought in for questioning. The jury was shown a tape of her interrogation where, after repeated denials, she separately told Van Buren Sgt. Daniel Perry and former Detective Keith Lindley that she had performed oral sex on the child on two occasions.Lorri Rye, 35-year-old mother from Van Buren, Arkansas was sentenced by Circuit Court... more

CINCINNATI - Facing a third straight day without power, residents across the Midwest snapped up batteries, generators and coolers as they waited for crews to restore electricity knocked out by the remnants of Hurricane Ike.
In other parts of the Midwest, residents warily eyed rising rivers while other waterlogged communities began cleaning up the wet, stinky mess left behind by floodwaters. Flood warnings remained in effect Wednesday across the region.
As much as 10 inches of rain fell in Indiana, Illinois and Missouri after Ike hit Texas over the weekend. Hurricane-force wind blew in Ohio and Kentucky and a tornado in Arkansas damaged several buildings.

"A proposal aimed at effectively banning gays and lesbians from becoming foster or adoptive parents was cleared Monday to appear on this fall's ballot in Arkansas."
Hooray for more bigotry!
If homophobes are so worried about marriage and children, why don't they start with themselves? Let's:
- Ban Divorce
- Ban giving children up for adoption
- Ban having a child out of wedlock
- Make it a law that you must have a child within the first 2 or 3 three years of your marriage. Marriage is for children ONLY.
- A widow or widower must remarry within the first year of their spouse's death if you had children. A child NEEDS a mother and a father at all times!
That's just a quick list of things I can think of to get things rolling. "A proposal aimed at effectively banning gays and lesbians from becoming foster... more
