The results of forensic tests indicate that the bullet that killed 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos, and sparked this week's rioting, appears to have entered the youth's body directly. This casts doubt on claims by the 37-year-old policeman charged with the boy's murder that the bullet had been fired as a warning and ricocheted.
Here's an interview with a friend of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, in which he described what happened the night of Alex's murder.

On the night of December 6th, police shot 15-year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in cold blood in the Eksarhia district of Athens. Since that night, Athens and tens of other greek cities have been burning.
On the same night, up to 10,000 people took the streets of Athens on a spontaneous demonstration, burning and smashing banks, ministries and multinational shops. Ever since, tension has been increasingly escalating: universities are occupied, as are most of the high schools in the country. Barricades are being put up around Athens; clashes with the police are constant.
The cop has been charged with murder. Alex was killed in Exarchia, which has a reputation for being an anarchist neighborhood, and was the home to the Polytechnic uprising that brought down the Regime of the Colonels. His death was a catalyst for the riots, not the cause. Revolutionary fervor spread to Corfu, where a female protester was killed earlier this year. Actions have spread across Europe with the Greek embassies in London and Berlin being stormed and held by leftists and anarchists.
I believe the Berlin consulate is still in the people's hands but I am not 100% sure.
Also, the PM and Minster of the Interior have urged the people to calm down. But, there is talk (from BBC) they may call in the army. Which would just anger more people in this country that has a history of military rule. I predict that if the government doesn't totally collapse, then there will be a lot of resignations. On the night of December 6th, police shot 15-year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in cold... more

The financial crisis is only one of multiple crises that will affect every country, rich and poor alike.
There's also the global poverty crisis. Tens of millions of people across the developing world are expected to fall into extreme poverty and joblessness as a result of an economic mess originating in the United States. This is bad news for workers everywhere, as it means even more brutal competition in the globalized labor pool. The financial crisis is only one of multiple crises that will affect every country,... more

Bali/Jakarta, Indonesia — Greenpeace today condemned the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), for failing to take action against member companies who continue to destroy Indonesia’s peatlands and forests at the conclusion of its 6th annual meeting in Bali. "The rapid loss of forests in Indonesia and the current climate crisis needs strong leadership from the global business community. However the RSPO has failed dismally to take up the challenge. "'Sustainable palm oil' continues to be a farce while RSPO stands exposed as a weak and ineffectual industry body." said Bustar Maitar, Greenpeace Southeast Asia Forest Campaigner.Bali/Jakarta, Indonesia — Greenpeace today condemned the Roundtable on... more

In November, one or the other of the corporate candidates will win, and then, as always, it will be what the people do, not the politicians, that counts.
A video report on the protests that occurred in connection with the Democrat and Republican National Conventions, Ground Noise & Static is a manifesto. We went to Denver and St. Paul to take the pulse of the movement. Corporate media would cover the platitudes and posturing of the politicians, we were interested in something else, a story hidden in plain sight, captured in the now-classic street chant, “This is what democracy looks like.” In November, one or the other of the corporate candidates will win, and then, as... more

As the Republicans gathered last month in St. Paul to nominate John McCain for president, so did a group of protesters determined to stop them. We follow self-proclaimed anarchist Somorra and her friends as they successfully lockdown a highway off-ramp, blockade the streets, and clash with police in an attempt to shut down the Republican National Convention. Hear an insider's thoughts on anarchy, cops, and American culture and see why Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher called September 1 "eight hours of chaos."As the Republicans gathered last month in St. Paul to nominate John McCain for... more

The Anarchist Ice Cream Truck provides cool snacks for a summer day. They offer all the traditional flavors. They also offer information on 'knowing your rights', 'the Patriot Act', and the 'Black Panthers.'
The truck is stocked with things to help demonstrators: first-aid kits, ponchos, and cameras to document police brutality.
The driver, Aaron Gach, calls the truck "the alter ego of a police mobile command unit.”

Over the past two weeks in Denver and St. Paul, thousands of anarchists and other folks have come together to protest the conventions being held by the two wings of the Corporate Party. These protests were the culmination of almost two years of organizing. Organizers arranged not just protests, but many other events as well. Their efforts were met with severe and significant police repression, with over 800 people being violently arrested by the authorities and many others being violently attacked and terrorized. In response to these events, the police, the corporate media, and others have said many things about anarchists involved in these protests. While many of the comments on numerous Internet discussion boards have been supportive of anarchists and critical of the police, there have also been many lies and misconceptions said and written about anarchists. This FAQ is an effort to address and rebut those anti-anarchist words. Over the past two weeks in Denver and St. Paul, thousands of anarchists and other... more

Did you know that anarchists killed several police officers during the 1999 anti-WTO protests in Seattle?
No, you don't know that, because it never happened. But this is the kind of thing that many rank-and-file police believe who have been trained to police summit protests, including the ongoing anti-RNC protests happening this week in St. Paul, Minnesota. There were riots and lots of police violence in Seattle in 1999, but nobody was killed during those protests. Yet, police officers doing anti-protest policing in many American cities have been told this lie about anarchists.
This is probably not the only lie about protesters and anarchists that are indoctrinated into the police. Those who attend protests and those who have been arrested can attest to hearing incredible anti-protester beliefs coming out of the mouths of the police. Numerous online message boards have seen comments about protesters that come from police officers. Did you know that anarchists killed several police officers during the 1999 anti-WTO... more

At both the DNC and RNC, anarchists showed themselves to have seized the initiative to determine the character of street demonstrations. The US anarchist movement has survived several years of repression and attempted co-optation, proving that the upsurge associated with the anti-globalization era was not a flash in the pan: if anything, we are stronger today than ten years ago.At both the DNC and RNC, anarchists showed themselves to have seized the initiative to... more

DENVER COLISEUM -- The Iraqi Veterans Against the War took the stage and read an open letter to Barack Obama demanding he solidify his commitment against the war as the crowd chanted "U.S.A! U.S.A!"
Then Rage Against the Machine came onstage, gave the vets a military salute and burst into the explosive set that has made their live shows legendary. Kicking off with "Guerrilla Radio," the band blasted through crowd-pleasers like "Bulls On Parade."
Wayne Kramer of the MC5 soon joined them for the anthem "Kick Out the Jams." Before they started, Kramer reminded everyone why they were here.
"Forty years ago we went to Chicago to protest an illegal war we were lied into. Today we're in Denver to protest an illegal war we were lied into," he told the crowd.
The Coliseum is sweltering at this point in the midday heat and filled with the smell of sweaty bodies dancing and moshing to the music.

The same anarchist protesters who Monday night blocked off a downtown street and clashed with officers in riot gear say on their Web site that they plan a similar disruption tonight at the Pepsi Center aimed at stopping delegates from reaching the arena.
The Web site of DNC Disruption 08 says that protesters are to take two different tactics tonight - "snake marches" and blockades.
"Two snake marches will leave from two locations north and south of the Pepsi Center, making their way through downtown in a raucous, festive manner (bring your noise makers!) to delegate entrances at the Pepsi Center," the site reads. "Should one or both of the marches not reach the security perimeter, the marches will fall back to secondary goals."
The time and exact locations were not revealed. As of midafternoon, the area around the arena was mostly calm. Shortly after 2:30 a small group of protesters approached the Pepsi Center perimeter, but were pushed back by police.
The site says the group Unconventional Denver is calling out to other uncommitted "affinity groups" for help.

The protesters, 100 or more who range in age from their teens to their 50s, have been cordoned into an area of 15th Street between Cleveland and Court places by dozens of police in riot gear. The standoff started in the park and then quickly moved, said Brandon Brown, a volunteer medic from Seattle, Wash. Brown was carrying a bottle of water and offering it to the journalists and protesters who had been sprayed by officers. Many coughed from peppery haze near the steps of the Wellington Webb Municipal Building. When the crowd reached 15th, the officers formed a wall with their bodies.
The protest, which began about 7 p.m. in Civic Center Park, was an unpermitted event designed to "Disrupt the DNC," as a series of anarchist protests organized by Unconventional Denver have been labeled. According to literature reviewed by the Rocky Mountain News, attendees were told to "come ready for quick, decentralized actions spanning the downtown area at a variety of risk levels."
Almost immediately, said protester Magi Belknap, 21, police fired pepper spray at the protesters, causing them to flee across the park and onto 15th Street, where numerous officers blocked them into a pair of parking garages. "The police started hitting people," Belknap said. "We only walked for like a block" before the confrontation, she said. Protester Honey Traiman, 55, said the police action was unprovoked. "It was a very peaceful little march," she said. "They came from every side."
"They came from all around," said a young woman wearing a bandanna over her mouth after she made it past a wall of officers who had blocked her inside with their batons. "I tried to get out, but it was only when I started crying that they met me out." The woman declined to give her name. Some observers said it appeared demonstrators may have hidden dozens of protesters inside the parking garages on 15th Street. "I think they were hiding in the garages," said John Chodkowski, who lives on Capitol Hill and said he was there to watch the events unfold after being caught in them while on a bike ride. "This is pretty crazy."
Information officer Jim Shires of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said he hadn't heard of anyone being injured in the scuffle. Shires said officers were separating those behind the barrier and interviewing them. He said he didn't know if anyone had been detained. Pete Nelson, 23, of Denver called the scuffle a "police riot," as he held a video camera, filming the wall of riot police.
"The cops were being brutally violent," he said. "They weren't doing anything but chanting." The crowd continued chanting "let them go" and singing songs nearly a half-hour after the crowd rushed to 15th. But by 8:15 p.m., the protest seemed to die down.
