Most Say They Would Not Heed Palin Endorsements

CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.

Almost half of American voters continue to view Sarah Palin unfavorably and most would not heed her political endorsements, a new CBS News/ New York Times poll shows.

The former vice presidential candidate's favorability rating has declined slightly since August, with 46 percent of surveyed voters viewing her unfavorably and 21 percent viewing her favorably. Thirty-two percent of voters said they were either undecided or hadn't heard enough to have an opinion, according to the poll, conducted Sept. 10-14. Last month, 23 percent of voters viewed Palin favorably, whereas 40 percent viewed her unfavorably and 35 percent didn't know.

However, Palin continues to enjoy support among Republicans, conservatives and - in particular - Tea Partiers: 56 percent of Tea Party members, 50 percent of Republicans and (a net positive of) 38 percent of conservatives said they have a positive opinion of Palin.

Democrats (68 percent) and Independents (a net negative of 45 percent) said they had a negative opinion of Palin.

Many voters said they would be less likely to vote for Palin-endorsed candidates, the poll indicates. Twelve percent of all voters said a Palin endorsement would make them more likely to vote for that candidate, while 37 percent said it would make them less likely to do so. But 48 percent said it made no difference.

And although 36 percent of Tea Partiers and 33 percent of Republicans said they would be more likely to vote for a Palin-backed candidate, most indicated that such an endorsement wouldn't affect their decisions: Fifty-seven percent of Tea Party supporters and 61 percent of Republicans said Palin's endorsement wouldn't make a difference in their vote. (Six percent of Tea Party members and five percent of Republicans said the former governor's endorsement would make them less likely to vote for a candidate.)

Two in three voters overall said they believe Palin's endorsements are motivated more by a desire to stay in the public eye than an interest in electing conservative candidates, but Republicans and Tea Party members are more divided. Among conservatives, 29 percent think she is more concerned with electing conservative candidates, while 53 percent think she mostly wants to stay in the public eye.

Of the 43 candidates Palin has endorsed, 25 have won primaries, 11 have lost and 7 have not had to face a primary, according to the Washington Post.

Meanwhile, all voters struggled to pinpoint a strong Republican leader: When asked which public person best represents the Republican party today, 62 percent of those surveyed - including 51 percent of Republicans - could not name someone. Among those who did, Sarah Palin was the top mention with just six percent, followed by John McCain (five percent) and Newt Gingrich (four percent). Among just Republicans, six percent named Palin, three percent named McCain, eight percent named Gingrich, and one percent named both Boehner and McConnell.

Talk show host Glenn Beck is pursuing the owner of the domain name glennbeckrapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com, charging trademark violations and claiming rights to the domain. Now, the anonymous owner responds, telling an arbiter that "only an abject imbecile" could mistake the site for one of Beck's own.

Conservative yakker Glenn Beck hasn't (yet) been rounded up and sent to a secret FEMA prison camp, which has given him time instead to send his lawyers after the owner of the satirical glennbeckrapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com. Beck has reached deep inside to find a hitherto hidden well of respect and affection for foreign international organizations, and he has taken his case to the domain name dispute center at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. The site, he says, is defamation, and it violated his trademarked name.

But the anonymous website operator who has been targeted by Beck today stepped up, identified himself, and found a lawyer to file a response (PDF)—and what a response it is. How many legal documents have you seen that throw circumspection to the four winds and tell a WIPO arbiter that "only an abject imbecile could believe that the domain name would have any connection to the Complainant." And that's before the "HOMOSEXUAL BLOOD ELF" even makes an appearance.

Glennbeckrapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com turns out to be run by one Isaac Eiland-Hall. Eiland-Hall had discovered a Fark thread in which commenters picked up on a Gilbert Gottfried routine about Bob Saget raping and murdering a teenaged girl (it's, er, a bit funnier in context than it sounds [NSFW]). They adapted it for Beck to highlight what they perceived as his habit of forcing people to explain away completely baseless charges—as when Beck interviewed Muslim Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) and opened with this gem: "And I have to tell you, I have been nervous about this interview because what I feel like saying is, sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies. And I know you're not. I'm not accusing you of being an enemy. But that's the way I feel, and I think a lot of Americans will feel that way."

How better to give Beck a taste of his own medicine than by wondering publicly why he has never addressed the rumor that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990?
