Whale Wars
Fridays at 9 PM e/p, starting November 7
Captain Paul Watson founded his Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 1977 because he believed his new organization had to go even further to eradicate whaling, poaching, shark finning and habitat destruction — and to uphold international conservation laws on the high seas — than the Greenpeace group he had co-founded.
For several years, Watson's group of staff and volunteers have engaged in a campaign almost every winter to find and stop Japanese ships that hunt whales in the name of research, attempting to stop them by any non-violent means necessary. The eclectic group — labeled activists, heroes and/or eco-pirates — leave port in Melbourne, Australia for a two-month campaign that is dangerous, controversial and has garnered international media attention. Sea Shepherd's dedicated, international crew have spent their holiday the last several years and risked their lives at the bottom of the Earth to save whales.
In the Spotlight
During the 2007-2008 campaign, Animal Planet captured the intensity of Sea Shepherd's mission and the trials and tribulations of the crew in a new seven-part, hour-long weekly series Whale Wars, premiering Friday, November 7 at 9 PM. The series draws attention to this global conservation issue that has caused friction between several nations over the practice of whaling in oceanic territories. This year's campaign was particularly eventful with multiple engagements, capsizing, possible hostage taking and alleged shooting, and Animal Planet crews were onboard to document it as it unfolded.
Highlighting both the controversial whaling trade and the tactics that Sea Shepherd and its staff and volunteers use to attempt to cripple it, the series documents the group's three-month sojourn across the icy Antarctic waters at the far end of the globe. Each week on Whale Wars, Animal Planet will take viewers on a powerful and adrenaline-fueled adventure and spotlight how the group takes action against alleged illegal whaling operations.
Aggressive Tactics
The Society's fight to eradicate Japanese whaling on the high seas — where international laws are interpreted by different countries and organizations in different ways — utilizes some aggressive techniques, including ramming and disabling whaling ships; disrupting whale carcass processing; engaging in physical entanglement; and boarding and dispersing fleets of whaling vessels. For the campaign this season, Sea Shepherd christened its vessel in honor of the iconic conservationist Steve Irwin with the blessing of his wife Terri, both of whom support the organization independent of Animal Planet.
"Whaling has no place in the 21st century," noted Watson. "Sea Shepherd will not stop until the killing ends." Whale Wars

The cable industry is offering up a bevy of alternatives to the Super Bowl's halftime show featuring Tom Petty. Some of the options include...
1. FX: grown men stuffing themselves with eggs and ham
2. Oxygen: Deion Sanders skirmishing with his wife over household chores
3. Animal Planet: kittens squaring off on a football field
Both FX and Oxygen are starting their halftime shows once the whistle is blown ending the first half on FOX. Animal Planet will be broadcasting the "Puppy Bowl" and the "Kitten Bowl" will take place at halftime (aimed to be timed closely to the Super Bowl).

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/11/071101-lemur-relative.html NEWS PEG
Lemurs are primates found only on the African island of Madagascar and some tiny neighboring islands.
Lemurs make up the infraorder Lemuriformes and are members of a class of primates known as prosimians.
These range in size from the tiny 30 gram (1 oz) Pygmy Mouse Lemur to the 10 kilogram (22 lb) Indri.
The larger species, some of which weighed up to 240 kg[3], have all become extinct since humans settled on Madagascar, and since the early 20th century the largest lemurs reach about 7 kilograms (15 lbs).
During mating season, male lemurs battle for dominance by trying to outstink each other. They cover their long tails with smelly secretions and wave them in the air to determine which animal is more powerful.
Ring-tailed lemurs live in groups known as troops and Unlike most other primates, lemur species have a Matriarchal societyhttp://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/ring-tailed-lemur.html LISTEN... more

?Eres lo que lees?. You are what you read. The sentence, written with dog food, was displayed on the white wall of an art gallery. Close to that wall, an abandoned and diseased street dog was left tied to a rope and a wire string. An incense burner was placed nearby where, allegedly, crack and cannabis was burnt during the inauguration. Without food and water, the animal died in the gallery during the next day.
It happened in Nicaragua. It was an ?installation? by artist Guillermo Vargas, known as Habacuc.
The situation, documented with several images, received a lot of attention on the web and originated an online petition against it?s author that gathers, as I write these words, close to 50.000 signatures.
The widespread perplexity for this gesture committed in the name of art launched a fiery discussion about its limits. The question isn?t new. People have been debating what art is since Duchamp signed an urinal and entitled it ?La Fontaine?. The centennial joke seems, however, to have lost its funniness. In the society of cultural relativism the grotesque has become a new critical endeavour. From cows cut in half and conserved in monoliths of fibberglass to diamonds engraved on human skulls, contemporary art production lives hostage to the trends of time. Art has become a place for the execution of function and aesthetic gesture. All is performance.
That art has to submit to all kinds of degradation is a sad consequence of its desperation for visibility. An art acquitted of any design other than the capture of attention. Moralism cloaked as irreverence and critique.
Here is, then, Habacuc, the great moralizer. On his own words, he states that ?the important to me was the hypocrisy of the people: an animal becomes the focus of attention when I put it on a white place where people go see art, not when he?s on the street dying of hunger?. Questioned on the reason why he didn?t use a different form of expressing his message, the inhumanity is complete. ?I remember what I see? The dog is more alive now than ever because people are still talking about it?.
It doesn?t take an animal lover to understand the intellectual grotesque of the whole thing. The display of a dog?s death in the name of a useless gesture. Habacuc against the world, in his prejudiced eyes where we are all hypocrites
Intending to change the world, and change us all, famous tyrants promoted the greatest genocides in history. To Habacuc, against our hypocrisy, was left the power to kill a miserable dog of the streets of Managua. As for art, well, maybe it died a long time ago.
