Here they go again.
The folks at Candy Dynamics say there's too much lead in a batch of their Toxic Waste Short Circuits Bubble Gum. So the marketer of tongue-torturing sour confections is recalling a bunch of the stuff (Lot #15070SC12 to be precise) sold from early in January until March 18th.
The affected gum was sold in 3.2 ounce packages. Food and Drug Administration tests found 0.189 parts per million of lead, a truly toxic metal. That amount is almost twice the FDA limit for lead in candy — 0.1 parts per million.
Just to be perfectly clear, the company says there haven't been any reports of anyone getting sick from the gum, which was sold all over the United States. But too much lead can pose a health hazard for babies, small kids and pregnant women.
Earlier this year the Indianapolis-based company, which imports the gum and other candies from Pakistan, recalled all flavors of its Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge Chew Bars for having too much lead. Then and now, the company said it was doing so "out of an abundance of caution."
Candy Dynamics says it will keep selling unaffected Short Circuits Bubble Gum.Here they go again.

Boffins claim they've cracked the secret which will enable them to create Willy Wonka style sweets which replicate three meals in a single stick of gum.
Scientist Dave Hart, from the Institute of Food Research, says he can turn Roald Dahl’s eccentric gourmet gum invention into reality -- and luckily, without the unpleasant side effects!
Working with a team from the National Science & Engineering Competition he says nanotechnology can be used to encapsulate and release flavours in a precisely controlled way.
Hart and his team are currently experimenting with boiled sweets which have different flavour layers separated with a tasteless gelatine and contain a final desert taste at the centre, encapsulated in a high-tech gel called Gellan.
While he says a chewing gum might be a few years away, it he proclaims his boiled sweets a success -- and he hasn't even turned any children into blueberries, or so he says.
Speaking of his work, Hart said: "Wonka’s fantasy concoction has been nothing but a dream for millions of kids across the world.
"But science and technology is changing the future of food, and these nanoparticles may hold the answer to creating a three course gourmet gum.
"The mechanism exists but the technique and flavours need perfecting. In the meantime, I’m working on the idea of a boiled sweet version which uses a much older scientific technique.”

According to the press, scientists have made a break through in gum technology, which would see the flavour changing gum featured in the Roald Dahl classic.
Turns out the microcapsules used in the gum was developed for medicine that could deliver the meds to different parts of the digestive system, but no it is instead perfect for making gum change from roast dinner to blueberry pie.
""There are a number of groups here at the Institute who have been working with these capsules to provide a new way of delivering drugs to the colon, which means they have to be able to survive passing through the rest of the digestive system.
"Researchers in America have been looking at using these capsules as a way of delivering flavour in food. So using it in this way would allow us to provide new experiences for people when eating. Iowa teen Elizabeth Rasmuson and her boyfriend Jordan Weaver are getting ready for Garner's prom next weekend.
They already have one main part down...the outfits.
Elizabeth said, "I heard about somebody making a dress out of duct tape or something one time so I just was like what's something cool and I've always liked the colors of the "Five" gum."
That's right...she's going to prom in her very own hand-made dress that's made out of gum wrappers.
The idea started after making a jacket of wrappers last year and after that she decided to be unique with her dress for prom as well.
Elizabeth said, "we started collecting like the specific colors like at the very beginning of the year in August."
And of course they wanted to have the matching vest. So, Weaver started working on his piece of the outfits.
If you're wondering how many of these gum wrappers it takes for the dress, Elizabeth stopped counting after 200.

Chews your poison...
These Ten Strange and Unusual Japanese Chewing Gums are really not bad as chewing gum goes - some are actually quite good!
Japanese chewing gum differs from American chewing gum in many ways, and that probably is a result of the practical way Japan looks at chewing gum. Since it's merely chewed for a while and then disposed of, it just makes sense for chewing gum to serve some function, ANY function before being spat out. This way of thinking can produce some VERY strange and unusual types of chewing gum, and from them we've assembled this Top Ten list! Now then, let's get down to the good, the bad and the sticky!

A 14 year-old boy collapsed after chewing 45 sticks of Nicorette gum in 24 minutes. The gum was handed out by counsellors at his school. 45 sticks is the equivalent of 180 Marlboro Light cigarettes. He was rushed to the hospital with stomach pains after he collapsed in the playground.
The boy's mother is furious with the school, Menzies High School Science College in West Bromwich, which allows students as young as 12 to get up to a week's supply of the gum without parental consent.
His mother said: ‘I couldn’t believe that this gum can be given out like this without parents knowing. t is then being passed around the playground. The doctors said that he could have died and he had to be kept in for 24 hours for observation. I know what my son did was stupid, but if anything it proves that these kids can’t be given responsibility for taking medication that could do serious harm.’
Paul Harris, deputy head at Menzies School, said: ‘We have older teens in school who have issues with smoking and work directly with Decca, which offers support. This is low-strength nicotine gum and there is nothing stopping youngsters from the age of 12 buying it over the counter. Decca does not have to inform pupils’ parents about this.’

Hamas suspects that Israeli intelligence services are supplying its Gaza Strip stronghold with chewing gum that boosts the sex drive in order to "corrupt the young," an official said on Tuesday.
"We have discovered two types of stimulants that were introduced into the Gaza Strip from Israeli border crossings," Hamas police spokesman Islam Shahwan told AFP.
"The first type is presented in the form of chewing gum and the second in the form of drops," he said.
The Islamist movement that has run the densely populated and impoverished Palestinian territory for the past two years said it has detained members of a gang that helped to bring in the products.

Good news for A-cuppers, bad news for guys with moobs. Apparently there's a new gum on the market (from Japan, not surprisingly) that promises to give you the big boobs of your dreams. The recommended dose is 6 pieces per day, and it's full of all sorts of questionable chemicals and health warnings ("should not consume during pregnancy, breastfeeding, menstruation, or if you have been diagnosed with medical conditions of the ovaries, uterus, or breast.") Sorry, but anything meant to boost your bust size that also could cause serious problems for anyone with mammary glands or a uterus sounds pretty sketchy to me.Good news for A-cuppers, bad news for guys with moobs. It is an environmental scourge that saddles local government with clean-up bills running into hundreds of thousands of pounds. But today the world's first biodegradable chewing gum is arriving on British supermarket shelves, potentially putting to an end the sticky mess caused by the conventional product.
Chicza Rainforest Gum is manufactured in Mexico by Consorcio Chiclero - a consortium of 56 co-operatives employing some 2,000 chicleros (gum farmers) and their families. The workers extract natural gum from the sap of the chicle tree, which is then used to make the product.
Unlike conventional chewing gum, which contains petrochemicals, the organic chewing gum does not stick to clothing or pavements. And once disposed of, it will crumble to dust in about six weeks, dissolving harmlessly in water or being absorbed into the soil.
this is an amazing new product! I think that it'll lead to less annoyance of people who get gum stuck on the soles of their shoes...or the odd case hair.
What do you think? do you think that it's a safe product? Would you switch from regular gum that contained petro-chemicals (who knew) to organic gum?It is an environmental scourge that saddles local government with clean-up bills... more
