A baby born on a London bus has been given the middle name Dennis, after the vehicle's manufacturer.
Olatidebe Dennis Agboola, weighing 7.5lbs, is believed to be the first birth aboard one of London's buses after he arrived at the back of a No394 in Hackney last Thursday.
Pauline Jacobs, the driver, alerted controllers to dispatch an ambulance as Emiloju Fatima Lawal went into labour.
She parked the single-decker bus near Mare Street to help the pregnant woman, and was assisted by passenger Carole Allen, 60, a switchboard supervisor at Homerton Hospital.
Miss Lawal, 37, of Hackney, who has three other children and who was gave birth on Tuesday, a day early, said: "A man asked if I was OK, I said 'No, I'm in Labour.'
"A few minutes later he came out and I said 'Excuse me, the baby is here'."
Miss Allen said: "he just flew out onto the floor. I didn't feel panicked, just relieved."A baby born on a London bus has been given the middle name Dennis, after the vehicle's... more

"I used to dread the rain when I lived in London. But in a town like L.A. where you rarely get a season change, you kinda embrace the moment. The only problem is, unlike the famously written pavement sign in this photo, neither of us looked right after that day."
If only teleportation and time-travel were real. You could go back and fix mistakes. You could re-live moments. But the sad fact is that you have to accept reality and often times it’s heartbreaking no matter how hard you try to alter it. This is about a girl and guy who try and make a place something it’s not and in the end it breaks both of their hearts. It Begins:

"The Scottish Labour Party is calling for trains and buses to offer free Wi-Fi, following the tradition of parties not in power of calling for impractical, but populist, measures.
The idea is to get people out of cars by improving public transport, and skips over the fact that public transport in Scotland is run by private companies who make their own decisions about internet connectivity, not to mention the basic impossibility of providing back-haul for every bus in Scotland.
Not that these problems faze John Park, Economy and Skills spokesman for Scottish Labour, who is quoted by the BBC as saying: "This is a sensible measure that would be good for the economy and good for the environment."
The quoted article isn't very impressed but i quite like the idea, especially free Wi-Fi on trains which can often be long journeys and would be a bit more interesting with a decent internet connection.

At least 22 people died and another 31 were injured in eastern Peru when a bus plunged off a mountain road, news reports said Monday.
The state-run Andina news agency had reported 19 dead Sunday, just hours after the early morning accident in the Andes Mountains.
The bus, which carried foreign tourists, was only eight minutes away from arriving at the town of Quichuas on Sunday morning, Andina news said. It was traveling from the town of Ayacucho to Peru's capital, Lima, news reports said.
Most of the passengers were students and staff from the University of Huamanga, said Radio Programas del Peru, known as RPP. Three students and a professor were among those killed, RPP said.
Two of the dead were Colombians, RPP said.
The vehicle came to rest more than 100 meters (328 feet) below the road, in the rocky Mantaro River, Andina said.
Officials were still investigating the cause of the accident Monday. The bus was operated by the Molina Union transportation company, Andina said.
Japan's Keio University created the shocking Ellica, an electric supercar that could out-run some of the world's fastest exotics. Now for their next trick -- public transportation.
Ellica Electric Supercar to Spawn a Bus for Japan: The eight-wheeled Ellica electric supercar, created by researchers of Keio University in Japan, will reportedly spawn an electric shuttle bus. The Ellica can get from 0-60 in 4.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 230 miles per hour. The bus won't match those performance figures, but will adopt the Ellica's flat floor, low ride height and electric powerplant. Keio University
It resembles an early '70s Citroen sedan, recast for Blade Runner-era Los Angeles. But this Japanese-built electric oddity, dubbed Ellica by its developers at Keio University, will reportedly spawn something with a bit less techie-sex appeal -- a bus. The university announced a deal last week with Isuzu Motors Ltd, the Kanagawa prefectural government, among others, to develop a full-sized electric bus for Japan based on the eight-wheeled, 230-mph research project.
Dr. Hiroshi Shimizu, the university's professor of Environment and Information Studies built the Ellica (Electric Lithium-Ion Car) over two years in the mid-2000s with a team of engineering students, stunning gearheads with supercar-like performance figures -- 0-60 in 4.1 seconds and a top speed higher than a Ferrari Enzo's. Eight, in-wheel electric motors each provide the power equivalent of 80 hp. Those eight small wheels, instead of four large ones, allow for a lower floor and center of gravity.
Japanese technology web site Tech On reports the Ellica will form the basis for a new electric-bus prototype with a flat, low-height floor. Isuzu Motors will design the body and Toshiba will contribute a lithium ion secondary battery with a capacity of 120kW, providing enough juice to shuttle passengers -- both replicants and humans, presumably -- 93 miles, or 150km, on a charge (the travel distance of a typical shuttle bus in Japan is about 75 miles per day). Tokyo Electric Power Company will create a charging infrastructure for the new e-bus.
Dr. Shimizu says the price of the bus, battery included, will be equivalent to that of a diesel bus -- assuming 500 units produced, at a running cost of a tenth that of a diesel bus.
The partners plan to complete development by late 2010, with volume production in Kanagawa Prefecture scheduled for 2011. Japan's Ministry of the Environment kicked in $5.16 million for the project.

A cat has become such a well-known user of a Devon bus service that its drivers know where to let him off.
Casper has been queuing with other passengers to get the number three service from his home in Plymouth for months, bus company First said.
It added that he often sat in the queue and then quietly padded on board and curled up on a seat for the ride.
Casper's owner Susan Finden, 55, who picked him from a rescue home in 2002, said he had always been a free spirit.

A group of London bus drivers will be staging a protest today (August 5th) wearing just their underpants.
In a campaign called "Race to the Bottom" the Union Unite claims that drivers' wages can vary by as much as £10,000 a year - and disparities in other conditions of employment are leading to a damaging "race to the bottom" in service provision.
The drivers will wear boxer shorts that will say "Stop the race to the bottom" during the demo.

Casper, a 12 year-old cat from Devon, boards the No3 service at 10.55am every day from outside his home in Plymouth. He then travels the entire 11-mile route before returning home about an hour later.
Bus drivers have been told to look out for him to make sure he gets off at the right stop.
Casper's owner, Susan Finden, explained the strange situation: "Casper has always disappeared for hours at a time but I never understood where he was going. I called him Casper because he had a habit of vanishing like a ghost. But then some of the drivers told me he had been catching the bus. I couldn't believe it at first, but it explains a lot. He loves people and we have a bus stop right outside our house so that must be how he got started - just following everyone on. I used to catch the odd bus too so maybe he saw me and got curious what I was doing."
One of the bus drivers on the route, added: "He usually just curls up at the back of the bus. Sometimes he nips between people's legs but he never causes any trouble."Casper, a 12 year-old cat from Devon, boards the No3 service at 10.55am every day from... more
Tribes in Utah are speaking out against a proposal to develop a commuter rail stop on what was once an American Indian village.
In March, Gov. Jon Huntsman signed a bill paving the way for a possible land swap and the subsequent development of the Utah Transit Authority's FrontRunner stop and a surrounding private development.
The five tribes in Utah said Wednesday they plan to deliver resolutions to the governor's office opposing the project in Draper, about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City.
