The Mexican president has blamed US "corruption" for hampering his nation's efforts to combat violent drug cartels.
Felipe Calderon also told the AFP news agency that the main cause of Mexico's drug gang problems was "having the world's biggest consumer [of drugs] next to us".
"Drug trafficking in the United States is fuelled by the phenomenon of corruption on the part of the American authorities," he said on Wednesday.

PHOENIX — The Mexican agents who moved in on a safe house full of drug dealers last May were not prepared for the fire power that greeted them.
When the shooting was over, eight agents were dead. Among the guns the police recovered was an assault rifle traced back across the border to a dingy gun store here called X-Caliber Guns.
Now, the owner, George Iknadosian, will go on trial on charges he sold hundreds of weapons, mostly AK-47 rifles, to smugglers, knowing they would send them to a drug cartel in the western state of Sinaloa. The guns helped fuel the gang warfare in which more than 6,000 Mexicans died last year.PHOENIX — The Mexican agents who moved in on a safe house full of drug dealers... more

Do we really need to spend millions more on a fence right now? Thanks to the US economy, immigrants are leaving the US via the southern border, not trying to get in illegally.
>
"The government has completed 500 miles of fencing along the Southwest border, 170 miles short of its goal."
"Congress has set aside $2.7 billion for the fence since 2006. But there's no estimate how much the entire system — the physical fence and the technology — will cost to build, let alone maintain."
"The fence along the U.S.-Mexico border is not intended to stop illegal immigration altogether, but make it more difficult for people to enter the U.S. illegally, Bush administration officials say."Do we really need to spend millions more on a fence right now? Thanks to the US... more

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) -- Police have found nine more bodies dumped around the Mexican border city of Tijuana, where nearly 50 people have been killed in a week of violence related to the drug trade.
Municipal police found five of the bodies Saturday between two small shopping centers in the eastern part of the city. They had been beaten and had their hands bound.
The bodies of two beheaded men were found wrapped in blankets on a road elsewhere in the city, according to the Baja California state Attorney General's Office. The heads were in black plastic bags nearby.
A piece of cardboard left by the bodies read: "These are the bricklayer's people." On Monday, a message found with 12 bodies next to a Tijuana elementary school threatened "all of those who are with 'The Engineer.'"
State prosecutor Rommel Moreno has blamed the violence on warring leaders within the Arellano Felix drug gang. More than 400 people have been killed in drug-related violence in the city across from San Diego this year, including at least 49 this week.
On Friday night, two men were found shot to death in the same empty lot near the elementary school where the 12 bodies were found Monday.
Execution-style killings, beheadings and shootouts have soared across Mexico since the army and federal police intensified their fight against the drug trade nearly two years ago.
In the southern city of Oaxaca, four banners purportedly signed by the Gulf Cartel blamed another drug gang, La Familia, for a Sept. 15 grenade attack that killed eight people during Independence Day celebrations in another Mexican state capital, Morelia.
Police earlier arrested three alleged Gulf Cartel hit men accused of throwing the grenades into crowds of revelers. Messages in the name of La Familia have blamed the Gulf Cartel for the attack.
Police quickly took down the banners. Oaxaca state police commissioner Jorge Quezadas said they were handed over to federal prosecutors for investigation.TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) -- Police have found nine more bodies dumped around the Mexican... more

"I'm not doing propaganda; I'm showing a piece of the truth," says the veteran director of Hollywood films such as "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "Message in a Bottle."
Brave truth-teller or cheap political shill? Los Angeles audiences will be able to judge for themselves when “Fraude Mexico 2006" opens here theatrically Oct. 10, following a sold-out screening this week at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.
LUIS MANDOKI has been called the Michael Moore of Mexico, a filmmaker whose overtly partisan documentaries preach messages to viewers who are already inclined to believe. But that's not the worst thing his critics had to say of Mandoki's most recent film, which purports to prove fraud in the Mexican presidential election of 2006. One writer compared the director, who is Jewish, to infamous Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl, who championed her friend Adolf Hitler in the 1934 film "Triumph of the Will."

On Tuesday, September 2nd, the head of the Mexican right-wing party known as the National Action Party (PAN, by its initials in Spanish), German Martinez, published an article on El Universal newspaper in Mexico City in which, signing as head of his party, he wrote the following:
"Obama or McCain? Preferibly whoever does not play with the North American Free Trade Agreement."
You can see it for yourself in this link to the article:
http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/editoriales/41383.html
It is obvious Mr. Martinez was writing in favor of John McCain, given the fact that a few days ago a spokesperson for your campaign, Frank Sanchez, made clear to the Mexican media you are planning on revising NAFTA, something to which John McCain has opposed.
The immediate reaction of the right-wing government in Mexico was to criticize any attempt at revising NAFTA. This was said publicly by Mexican ambassador to the US, Arturo Sarukhan.
But that's not all. The same September 2nd Felipe Calderon, appointed (not elected) president of Mexico, who is a member of the PAN party, said in a radio interview that John McCain knows Mexico better than you. It's difficult to say why he said something like that considering McCain was in Mexico for just a few hours and the only places he went to were the presidential residence, a church (here he was received with protests from people who got offended with McCain's attempt at profiting politically with Mexico's religious icon of the Virgin of Guadalupe), and finally a base of the militarized police Calderon uses to repress demonstrations against his regime.
That's hardly a "better" knowledge of Mexico.
You can see what Calderon said here:
