A group of musicians including Orbital, Imogen Heap and Pete Doherty, are teaming up to record a single with the aim of knocking the X Factor winner's single off the Christmas number 1 spot.
In a move that'll be good for press but rubbish for sales, the "supergroup" are recording a version of John Cage's experimental work 4'33, the sound of an orchestra sat in silence, not playing their instruments.
Billy Bragg, Coldcut, Pendulum, Madness singer Suggs, John McClure, The Kooks, Heaven 17 and The Big Pink are also taking part in the unconventional session at Dean Street Studios in Soho.
Paul Epworth, who won the Brit Award for best producer this year, will be at the controls to record the four-minute, 33-second "performance".
"We're going to have a drum kit with a few drummers, some bass players, some guitarists."We're going to plug everybody in," said Xfm DJ Eddy Temple-Morris, who has helped organise the session.
"I don't know what the noise will be. I imagine there will be the tweak of a leather jacket, a cough, a snigger, a muffled laugh."
The single will raise money for five charities, including Calm, a service for young men at risk of suicide, and the British Tinnitus Association.
Youth Music, Nordoff Robbins music therapy and Sound & Music, a charity promoting challenging new music and sound art, will also benefit from the proceeds.
The song is 5/1 to be Christmas number one, according to bookmaker William Hill.
If the protest is about manufactured pop taking over the charts with unoriginal songs, why doesn't this group record their own original, interesting song to show Cowell and co. how it's done? Charity fund-raising aside, this seems too gimmicky; I'd rather the X Factor got to Number 1 than fork out money to hear Pete Doherty coughing up crack tar.

My first thought is he is going to meet up with his BFF Amy Winehouse. They should get together with Courtney Love and start a band called the Hot Mess.
British rocker Pete Doherty was arrested once again after he nodded off in BA plane toilet with his drug needle next to him.
The Mail quoted a plane passenger who said: “He had been in there for about 25 minutes when the announcement came over for the crew to prepare the flight for landing.
“The crew knocked on the door but Pete didn’t come out.
“They eventually managed to get in 10 minutes before the plane landed. Pete was taken back to his seat and he looked completely out of it.
“One of the crew took a needle out of the toilet wrapped in a tissue.”My first thought is he is going to meet up with his BFF Amy Winehouse. They should... more

Rocker Pete Doherty has long been a staple of the tabloids, making headlines for his on-off relationship with supermodel Kate Moss, frequent brushes with the law, battle against drugs and stint behind bars.
The 30-year-old is looking to put that behind him with his debut solo album "Peter Doherty: Grace/Wastelands," which puts the "r" back into Peter and, in many critics' minds, establishes him as an act to be taken seriously.Rocker Pete Doherty has long been a staple of the tabloids, making headlines for his... more

Carl Barat has quashed rumors that his old band The Libertines are about to reform after the British band's other former frontman, Pete Doherty, hinted at a possible reunion earlier this week.
Barat, who went on to form the band Dirty Pretty Things, told BBC Radio 6 he was too busy pursuing a solo musical career to reform the rock group and had also turned to acting.

Serial caner Pete Doherty is turning his hand to a new trade, and it's probably not what you'd expect... it's teaching!
Doherty will join a list of literary greats who have been invited to be a guest speaker of The University Philosophical Society at Trinity College, Dublin. Amongst those that have already spoken at the uni are Oscar Wilde, John 'Maverick' McCain, Bram 'Dracula' Stoker and Queeny actress Helen Mirren.
Apparently, he'll be talking about "life, love and much more."
Here's hoping he doesn't delve into any of his extra-curricular activities...Serial caner Pete Doherty is turning his hand to a new trade, and it's probably... more
