When can we tell gays in Uganda that "it gets better"?
It has been a year since Uganda's controversial anti-gay legislation was first introduced. As we reported in Vanguard’s documentary “Missionaries of Hate,” international pressure has made it unlikely that the proposed law will pass, but a lot of damage has already been done.

‘True Blood’ stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer were married on Saturday evening at a private residence in Malibu, Calif., according to the UsMagazine.com.
28-year-old Paquin – wearing a white halterneck gown and Neil Lane jewelry with her hair in an updo – and 40-year-old Moyer, clad in a dark suit, exchanged their vows at sunset under a white tent at a beachside villa.
The couple were “surrounded by their family and friends,” the rep adds in a statement. The guests – many of them bearing gifts in purple boxes and with purple bows – included Elijah Wood and True Blood costar Carrie Preston with husband Michael Emerson (Lost).
“It was a beautiful evening to get married and the sunset was gorgeous. Anna and Stephen seemed very excited to celebrate their wedding day,” a source tells People Magazine.

Anyone who wants to know why network television news hasn't mattered since the seventies just needs to check out this appearance by Logan. Here's CBS's chief foreign correspondent saying out loud on TV that when the man running a war that's killing thousands of young men and women every year steps on his own dick in front of a journalist, that journalist is supposed to eat the story so as not to embarrass the flag. And the part that really gets me is Logan bitching about how Hastings was dishonest to use human warmth and charm to build up enough of a rapport with his sources that they felt comfortable running their mouths off in front of him....
If I'm hearing Logan correctly, what Hastings is supposed to have done in that situation is interrupt these drunken assholes and say, "Excuse me, fellas, I know we're all having fun and all, but you're saying things that may not be in your best interest! As a reporter, it is my duty to inform you that you may end up looking like insubordinate douche bags in front of two million Rolling Stone readers if you don't shut your mouths this very instant!" I mean, where did Logan go to journalism school - the Burson-Marsteller agency?
Taibbi didn't limit his critique to just Logan — he connected her comments to a larger pattern among mainstream journalists, whether they cover wars in Afghanistan or presidential campaigns in the US, who he says prioritize access over fact-finding and truth-seeking:
Most of these reporters just want to be inside the ropeline so badly, they want to be able to say they had that beer with Hillary Clinton in a bowling alley in Scranton or whatever, that it colors their whole worldview. God forbid some important person think you're not playing for the right team!
Meanwhile, the people who don't have the resources to find out the truth and get it out in front of the public's eyes, your readers/viewers, you're supposed to be working for them -- and they're not getting your help.

"Standard protocol seemed to be followed by all parties involved-- an ethical journalist, a veteran public servant and a media team--yet the final product angered the country's top leaders and led to the resignation of a four-star general. "The Runaway General" exposed serious tensions within the military and government. And future access to military and government officials may be severely limited.
Access to the White House is already limited, according to a number of journalists featured in an April article in Politico. Most of the White House reporters with whom Politico spoke wished to remain anonymous, but they told the political news site that the relationship with Obama and the media is “hostile” and “as contentious on a day-to-day basis as any between press and president in the past decade.” In a situation where many reporters are already unhappy with limited access to government officials, it isn’t surprising to think that the McChrystal incident could result in even less availability."

"General Stanley McChrystal’s recent comments about his civilian peers in the Obama administration have left the sometimes-controversial former commander of the war in Afghanistan standing in the unemployment line. To be sure, McChrystal did cross the threshold of professional decorum in today’s military and for that, he needed to be held accountable. But the General was not insubordinate. In fact, his perspective on the troubled situation within the Obama administration’s foreign policy team should be considered--and not overshadowed by its delivery or the firing."

An angry President Obama removed Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal from his position as Commander of American forces in Afghanistan on Wednesday, and named as his replacement the architect of the 2007 surge in Iraq, Gen. David H. Petraeus. President Obama said he had done so because an article in “Rolling Stone” magazine featured contemptuous quotes from the general and his staff about senior administration officials, threatening to erode trust among administration and military officials, as well as to undermine civilian control of the military.
“War is bigger than any one man or woman, whether a private, a general or president,” President Obama said. “As difficult as it is to lose General McChrystal, I believe it is the right decision for our national security.” “I welcome debate among my team,” he said, “but I won’t tolerate division.”
This piece includes color photographs, as well as the full video of President Obama's remarks.

General McChrystal’s Burning Contempt for the Puppet Obama

The farce that is the war in Afghanistan is coming apart at the seams. General Stanley McChrystal’s sharp comments about Obama, Biden, and the administration published by Rolling Stone are not so much about disrespect, as the script-reading corporate media talking heads would have it, but rather about a policy in disarray in Afghanistan.

President Obama’s top commander in Afghanistan was flown to Washington on Tuesday to find out whether he will be fired, after an article in “Rolling Stone” quoted him and his staff members speaking critically about top members of President Obama’s team.
With the war effort faltering, the comments by General Stanley McChrystal illustrated the disarray and spitefulness that exists among the Afghanistan team, as well as the tensions between the president and the military. In the magazine article, General McChrystal or his aides spoke derisively of Vice President Biden, Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, National Security Adviser General James L. Jones, Richard C. Holbrooke, the special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, and even President Obama himself.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs refused to say outright whether General McChrystal would lose his position. Gibbs questioned the general’s judgment, calling the comments an enormous mistake, adding that military parents need to know that “the structure where they’re sending their children is one that is capable and mature enough in prosecuting a war as important as Afghanistan.”
This piece includes color photographs, a link to the “Rolling Stone” article and two videos.

A really great article from Rolling Stone that details Goldman Sachs' involvement in financial crises since the Great Depression.
" ... any attempt to construct a narrative around all the former Goldmanites in influential positions quickly becomes an absurd and pointless exercise, like trying to make a list of everything. What you need to know is the big picture: If America is circling the drain, Goldman Sachs has found a way to be that drain — an extremely unfortunate loophole in the system of Western democratic capitalism, which never foresaw that in a society governed passively by free markets and free elections, organized greed always defeats disorganized democracy.
The bank's unprecedented reach and power have enabled it to turn all of America into a giant pump-and-dump scam, manipulating whole economic sectors for years at a time, moving the dice game as this or that market collapses, and all the time gorging itself on the unseen costs that are breaking families everywhere — high gas prices, rising consumer credit rates, half-eaten pension funds, mass layoffs, future taxes to pay off bailouts. All that money that you're losing, it's going somewhere, and in both a literal and a figurative sense, Goldman Sachs is where it's going: The bank is a huge, highly sophisticated engine for converting the useful, deployed wealth of society into the least useful, most wasteful and insoluble substance on Earth — pure profit for rich individuals.
They achieve this using the same playbook over and o212; and in order to understand that, you need to understand what Goldman has already gotten away with. It is a history exactly five bubbles long — including last year's strange and seemingly inexplicable spike in the price of oil. There were a lot of losers in each of those bubbles, and in the bailout that followed. But Goldman wasn't one of them."
