IT'S known as the "Ballina Snow" _ that layer of fine black ash that falls across northern NSW every year as farmers burn off sugar cane fields after the harvest.
But the choking days of the country's black winter are nearing an end after NSW farmers developed a world-first process to turn sugar cane waste into electricity.
Two processing mills, converted into thermal power stations fuelled by waste that would otherwise have been burned, can make enough energy for 66,000 homes in the Richmond and Tweed Valleys.IT'S known as the "Ballina Snow" _ that layer of fine black ash that falls across... more

A number of large US food manufacturers have called on the government to ease sugar import limits, saying they fear the country could run out of supplies.
The letter from firms such as Kraft Food and Hershey comes in the week sugar prices have hit 28 year highs due to worldwide supply shortages.
Currently US food firms can only import a certain amount of sugar before they have to pay import tariffs.
US sugar manufacturers insist there is no shortage of domestic stocks.
In their letter to US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, the food firms, which also include General Mills, warned that "our nation will virtually run out of sugar".
However, the US Department of Agriculture said earlier this week that domestic supplies were now increasing.
This was backed by sugar industry group American Sugar Alliance (ASA), which said the next main sugar cane harvest would start later this month, while the sugar beet harvest would begin in October.
"There is absolutely no shortage of sugar here," said Jack Roney, director of economic and policy analysis at the ASA.

August 15 marks the end of the Blessed Virgin Mary's earthly life and the assumption of her body and soul into heaven.
We all have read about the many sightings of the Holy Mother over the years, but what do you do when an image of her miraculously appears in a glass you once used for coffee? Share it with others!
With the recent downturn in the economy many of us are in need of a miracle. Then again, we're always in need of miracles, or at least in need of proof that miracles are possible. What is a miracle?
Many people that have seen this glass in person, have described themselves as getting chills and having the hair on the back of their necks stand up. Others have commented on the bluish hue (aura) that can be clearly seen surrounding the image.

We do it for the bDr. David Kessler, 58, says that when he looks at a huge plate of French fries, he knows that if he starts eating them, he won't stop until he's wolfed them all down. Yes, even the former head of the Food and Drug Administration, who once oversaw the nation's health, struggles to eat well like the rest of us.
We do it for the buzz. Like drug addicts. How do we stop the constant craving?
In his new best-selling book, "The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite," Kessler, a San Francisco Bay Area pediatrician, explains why certain foods loaded with fat, sugar and salt exert such a pull, despite our best intentions to avoid them. As he discusses the biology that leads to scarfing down a plate of fries, he delves into such puzzles as why the French fry binger is more likely to remember the pleasant stimulation of the fries' salt, fat, texture and flavor than the stomachache and self-recrimination that follow it.
The former dean of medical schools at Yale and the University of California, San Francisco, Kessler, who is also a lawyer, contends that the American food culture, including our mores about when, where and how often we eat, plays a large role in fostering what he calls "conditioned hypereating." He argues that the government, food industry and individual diner all have parts to play in combating that plate of fries. While Kessler is not offering a weight-loss solution or proposing some chimerical healthy eating plan, his book strips away the allure of some of the most appetizing and unhealthy foods. I spoke with Dr. Kessler about why so many of us can't eat just one.uzz. Like drug addicts. In a real-life Willy Wonka-like story, a 12 year-old schoolboy has beaten thousands of other youngsters to land every child's dream job - official taster for a sweet company.
Harry Willsher won the coveted post by emailing a description of his favourite sweet, the Drumstick lolly, to Swizzels Matlow, a confectionery company based in Derbyshire.
His chief responsibilities will be eating Love Hearts, Refreshers and Cola Bottles in the name of research to make sure they are up to the standard expected by the average confectionery connoisseur.
He will now receive sackfuls of the company's produce direct to his door. Harry said: 'I couldn't be more delighted - I reckon it's the best job in the world.'
Mum and Dad have already accompanied him on a Willy Wonka-style tour of the company's factory. They say: 'He has also been given his own overalls embossed with his name and business cards which say "sweet tester".'

Mark Wolff, professor and chairman of the department of cardiology and comprehensive care at New York University College of Dentistry, and his colleagues immersed cow teeth (because of their similarity to human teeth) in either water or a top-selling sports drink -- including Vitamin Water, Life Water, Gatorade, Powerade, and Propel Fit Water. After soaking for 75 to 90 minutes, to replicate consuming a beverage over time, researchers measured the strength of the teeth.
Previous studies found that sports beverages can damage tooth enamel -- even more so than soda -- due to a combination of acidic components, sugars, and additives. This research looked specifically at the way sports drinks affected dentin, the dental tissue under enamel that determines the size and shape of teeth.Mark Wolff, professor and chairman of the department of cardiology and comprehensive... more
