A week-old puppy was trapped in a waste pipe for almost four hours after he was flushed down the lavatory.
He was eventually rescued by plumbers after firefighters were unable to rescue him. The drama unfolded after four-year-old Daniel Blair decided that his pet cocker spaniel "needed a wash" after getting muddy during a family walk.
His mother Alison, 40, checked the drain outside – and heard the dog whimpering - so immediately called 999.
But as the fire brigade were unable to reach him she called Dyno-Rod, a plumbing company. Plumbers used a special camera to locate the puppy – lying upside down in a pipe 20 yards away under a neighbour's house.
They then gently nudged him towards the nearest manhole cover where they were able to reach him and take him to safety.
Miss Blair explained: "I realised the dog was missing and asked the boys where he was. Daniel told me it had got muddy so they put it in the toilet and pulled the chain to give it a wash. I ran into the bathroom but the dog was nowhere to be seen. I assumed it was dead. I went into the garden, managed to lift up the drain cover and was amazed to hear him crying."
Daniel has since apologised. He said: "I had to give him a wash. I'm so, so sorry. I won't do it again."A week-old puppy was trapped in a waste pipe for almost four hours after he was... more

Nov. 19 is World Toilet Day, a time to reflect upon how far modern sanitation has come. In the United States in 2005, less than half of one percent of the country's more than 124 million households didn't have a flushing toilet [source: U.S. Census Bureau]. In comparison, 71 percent of India's total population of more than one billion people had no access to a toilet that same year. There were an estimated 350 million public and private toilets in the United States by the mid-1990s [source: Flushmate] -- a lot of toilets by anyone's measure. So what would happen if everyone in the United States decided to flush their toilets at the same time in celebration of World Toilet Day?Nov. 19 is World Toilet Day, a time to reflect upon how far modern sanitation has... more

Whatever happened to flying in style? According to an AP article, Ryanair, the Dublin-based discount airline is looking to start charging for the use of their toilets. Ryanair, famous for their cheap base fares and notorious for tacking on extra fees for checking in, luggage, breathing, yawning, and sneezing, have been studying the feasability of converting all the toilets to pay toilets believing that it's only a matter of time before the free flush era is gone. I have to say that at first we complained when they did away with food but upon second thought, we were kind of relieved (no more Swanson TV dinners, hurray!). When they started charging for alcohol it didn't matter because like most alcoholics, we just brought our own (why did we not think of this earlier). But when they started charging us for check-in luggage, that's when we started losing it. Then came pillows and blankets (fine) but now toilets?
