"Thirty smokers who were trying to quit watched television commercials from three advertising campaigns, which all ended by showing the phone number of the National Cancer Institute's smoking-cessation hotline. They were asked which commercials they thought would be most effective; they responded that advertising campaigns "A" and "B" would be the best and "C" would be the worst.
Thirty smokers who were trying to quit watched television commercials from three advertising campaigns, which all ended by showing the phone number of the National Cancer Institute's smoking-cessation hotline. They were asked which commercials they thought would be most effective; they responded that advertising campaigns "A" and "B" would be the best and "C" would be the worst.
"The medial prefrontal cortex predicted 'C' would be the best, 'B' would be second best and 'A' would be the worst -- essentially the opposite of what the experts and the participants told us they thought would happen," said the study's senior author, Matthew Lieberman, a UCLA professor of psychology and of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences."
A few months later, after the advertisements had been broadcast, the authors received the call-volume data from the National Cancer Institute's 1-800-QUIT-NOW hotline. They compared the number of people who called the hotline the month before and the month after each of the advertising campaigns was run. All three advertising campaigns were successful in increasing the number of phone calls to the hotline. Campaign "A" more than doubled the number of calls, "B" increased the number of calls more than ten-fold and "C" boosted the number of calls a remarkable thirty-fold. (The advertisements were shown in Michigan, Massachusetts and Louisiana.)

The Century of the Self tells the untold and sometimes controversial story of the growth of the mass-consumer society in Britain and the United States. How was the all-consuming self created, by whom, and in whose interests? Freud provided useful tools for understanding the secret desires of the masses. Unwittingly, his work served as the precursor to a world full of political spin doctors, marketing moguls, and society's belief that the pursuit of satisfaction and happiness is man's ultimate goal. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article12642.htmThe Century of the Self tells the untold and sometimes controversial story of the... more

Decreasing in proportion to the rise in military spending are our civil liberties; our representative government; the balance of powers within the government; resistance to policies of warrantless spying, imprisonment without charge, torture, and assassination; and the health of our news media. The war machine has become the greatest destroyer of the natural environment we have. And the shifting of funding from all other areas to the military has had disastrous results in as many fields as we might choose to name. http://warisacrime.org/content/lies-and-consequences-our-past-15-warsDecreasing in proportion to the rise in military spending are our civil liberties; our... more

By exposing lies and misinformation, WikiLeaks has become a threat to US propaganda, and the US has been doing its damnedest to neutralise it. US attorney general Eric Holder is on record as saying that the release of sensitive diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks had put the US and its citizens at risk. He subsequently authorised a criminal investigation into WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange. Many officials in the US regard Assange as a criminal, even a terrorist, who indeed should be put on trial. http://www.countercurrents.org/todhunter280512.htmBy exposing lies and misinformation, WikiLeaks has become a threat to US propaganda,... more

When America goes to war or plans one, media scoundrels march in lockstep. Articles, commentaries, editorials, and broadcasts feature Washington handout-style journalism. Managed news misinformation substitutes for truth and full disclosure. Readers and viewers are deceived and betrayed. For years, Iran and Syria have been targeted for regime change. Independent governments aren't tolerated. Puppet ones are planned to replace them. Scoundrel media play leading roles. http://sjlendman.blogspot.com/2012/05/anti-iranian-propaganda.htmlWhen America goes to war or plans one, media scoundrels march in lockstep. Articles,... more

Be afraid. Be very afraid.
This would be a glorified form of astroturfing, which is already in full swing by Koch brother organizations, through the use of persona management software, which creates phony social media personas meant to fool the public into believing that they’re real people, and to disguise the identities of those behind them. These personas, up to a dozen of which can be controlled by one person at any given time, troll online forums and comment sections, posting phony comments meant to mislead the public on any given issue.

This judicial procedure is nothing more than another vicious weapon in the fabricated “War on Terror” to be used against another Muslim country, with a view to destabilizing Iran as well as justifying ongoing military threats. It also says a lot more about the people behind the lawsuit than about the accused. The expert witnesses who testified against Iran are very active in warmongering neocon circles. They belong to a web of architects of the 21st century Middle-Eastern wars, ranging from high profile propagandists to intelligence and military officers, including former U.S. officials. http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=30777This judicial procedure is nothing more than another vicious weapon in the fabricated... more

If you’re not from Washington State, you might only know of Adam Smith for sponsoring HR 4192 – Due Process and Military Detention Amendments Act, a laudable act, to be sure. While it was hardly major news in March when he introduced the bill, news of his sponsorship piggy-backed on the momentous occasion of US District Judge Katherine Forrest’s ruling that, “that Section 1021 of NDAA was facially unconstitutional — a rare finding — because of the potential that it could violate the 1st Amendment” (LA Times, May 18, 2012). Smith gets his mention way down at the bottom (similarly in coverage elsewhere, as well). Sadly, his attempt to protect citizens from indefinite military detention without due process failed 182-238.
Late Friday the 18th, however, BuzzFeed broke the news that the same Adam Smith would like you to believe that:
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Gideon Rachman’s 2008 article titled ‘And now for a world government’ and, more recently, Scientific American- editor Gary Stix’s piece Effective World Government Will be Needed to Stave Off Climate Catastrophe, illustrate a widespread and dangerous misconception. It also demonstrates the cunning of one world- propagandists in the crafting of their arguments. In Rachman’s article we are shown typical Palaeolithic artistry: horses, warriors, deer and, portrayed on the very same rocky surface, a globe. It is almost admirable were it not so deviously cunning, to bundle within a single image the primitive with the “modern” and by doing so, considering the latter as the logical conclusion of the former. Rachman explains: http://www.pakalertpress.com/2012/05/19/feature-report-legitimizing-global-tyranny-how-theorizing-snake-oil-salesmen-sell-world-government/Gideon Rachman’s 2008 article titled ‘And now for a world... more

The horror stories about the Transportation Security Administration are indisputable. In the post 911 environment, civil liberties routinely ignored or eliminated, become a mere memory in a country that once prided itself as the beacon of freedom for the entire world. The TSA is part of the Department of Homeland Security. FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is also an agency of DHS. The public relation spin for the purpose of such authorities is to protect citizens and guard the nation. The reality is that DHS bureaus have the same mission, keep the government safe from potential real or imaginary threats. Interpret threats to mean anyone who opposes the establishment regime, now known as, the military-industrial-financial-security complex. http://batr.org/autonomy/052012.htmlThe horror stories about the Transportation Security Administration are indisputable.... more
