In August 2009 more than 100 people, mainly woman, gathered in the parking lot of Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital in Wadsworth, Ohio--a town of 20,000 in the northeast part of the state--to protest the threatened closing of the maternity ward there. Two months later it was gone.
Fast forward to December 2010 and another crowd of about 100, most of them nurses working at the John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix. They were rallying in front of the hospital to stop the closure of the obstetric unit there. Most of those nurses will be out of work in early February, when the hospital proceeds with plans to close its birthing facilities.
The number of maternity wards that are closing across the country are hard to track. But a Google Internet search shows the flashing lights of protests and outcries in numerous U.S. communities. From New Jersey to Washington state, in urban and rural areas, maternity services are at risk. In 2008, about 4.2 million infants were born in the U.S., down slightly from the 4.3 million the year before--not a sufficient number to explain the closings.
Major explanations are high medical malpractice premiums in this specialty and a rising dependence on Medicaid reimbursement, which cover, on average, 88 percent of the actual costs.

Hands off St. Vincent's! A Community Rallies to Reclaim their Hospital
New York, NY - In April 2010, after 160 years of service to the people of New York City, St. Vincent's closed directly due unconscionable government and private industry failures. As a result, people are dying, emergency rooms at other hospitals are overflowing with the influx of patients, local businesses are hurting from the loss of business St. Vincent's provided and 3,500 people have lost their jobs.
Hands off St. Vincent's is a group of New Yorkers who have made an unwavering commitment to fight through non-violent direct action (including civil disobedience) for a New Village Hospital that provides equal services to what was provided at St. Vincent's Hospital.
"This closing is devastating, like a death", says Angela Jones, a Greenwich Village resident and former St. Vincent's emergency room volunteer. "We're all angry and we want our hospital back!"
The group has promised to take direct action against those who work against the establishment of a New Village Hospital or are inactive in this restoration. The list of targets includes elected officials (or government agencies), developers, purchasers, judges, etc.
"We will not waiver from our goal whatsoever", says activist and fellow Greenwich Village resident Timothy Lunceford, "Anyone who stands in our way can and will be a target. The only acceptable resolution would be the revival of our hospital. Stand in our way and you will feel the might of our rage."
Civil disobedience trainings and action planning sessions will commence on Saturday, January 8 from 2-5 pm at the University Settlement at the Houston Street Center located at 273 Bowery - Classroom 3. (Directions: The Center is at the corner of Bowery and Houston. The staff will direct all "Hands Off St. Vincent's" participants. Take the F train to 2nd Avenue stop or B-D trains to Broadway-Lafayette or 6 train to Bleecker St.). A steady wave of actions will begin shortly thereafter.

Maupin was charged with numerous offenses, including third- and fourth-degree sex offense. He has since posted $50,000 bond.
At the time of his arrest, Maupin was working at Amedisys Home Health Services in Elkton.

In a case that seems lifted from a Wes Craven movie script, eight Italian doctors have been slapped with jail time for carrying out 83 unnecessary operations including breast and lung removal on patients, the BBC is reporting.
Head surgeon Pier Paolo Brega Massone reportedly received the heftiest sentence -- 15 and a half years -- for overseeing the various procedures. The judge is quoted by the BBC as calling Brega Massone "cruel, malevolent and lacking the slightest sense of human pity," and ruled the surgeon had given a mastectomy to a patient with a minor breast ailment, and opted to remove an elderly woman's lung over three operations when the procedure only required one.
According to the Telegraph, at least five additional patients are said to have died from undergoing operations at Milan's Santa Rita Clinic -- dubbed the "clinic of horrors" by the Italian media -- under Brega Massone's supervision. Most of them were elderly patients in frail condition.

Haiti: Suspected Cholera Outbreak Kills 135
Aid Groups Rush in Supplies as Deadliest Outbreak Since Earthquake Hits Refugees; 1,000 Said to be Infected

Victims await treatment at a medical facility in St. Marc, northern Haiti, amid an epidemic that has claimed at least 135 lives over the last few days, Oct. 21, 2010. (Getty Images)
(CBS/AP) At least 135 people have died in a suspected cholera outbreak, and aid groups are rushing in medicine and other supplies Friday to combat Haiti's deadliest health problem since its devastating earthquake.
The outbreak in the rural Artibonite region, which hosts thousands of quake refugees, appeared to confirm relief groups' fears about sanitation for homeless survivors living in tarp cities and other squalid settlements.
"We have been afraid of this since the earthquake," said Robin Mahfood, president of Food for the Poor, which was preparing to fly in donations of antibiotics, dehydration salts and other supplies.
Many of the sick have converged on St. Nicholas hospital in the seaside city of St. Marc, where hundreds of dehydrated patients lay on blankets in a parking lot with IVs in their arms as they waited for treatment.
Catherine Huck, deputy country director for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said the Caribbean nation's health ministry had recorded 135 deaths and more than 1,000 infected people.
"What we know is that people have diarrhea, and they are vomiting, and (they) can go quickly if they are not seen in time," Huck said. She said doctors were still awaiting lab results to pinpoint the disease.
David Darg, international disaster relief director for Operation Blessing International told CBS News on Thursday it was the worst outbreak of disease he had seen since the earthquake, and many lying outside of the hospital were children.
The president of the Haitian Medical Association, Claude Surena, said the cause appeared to be cholera, but added that had not been confirmed by the government.
"The concern is that it could go from one place to another place, and it could affect more people or move from one region to another one," he said.
Cholera is a waterborne bacterial infection spread through contaminated water. It causes severe diarrhea and vomiting that can lead to dehydration and death within hours. Treatment involves administering a salt and sugar-based rehydration serum.
No cholera outbreaks had been reported in Haiti for decades before the earthquake, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Haitian officials, including President Rene Preval, have been pointing to the lack of severe disease outbreaks as a hard-to-see success of the quake response.
With more than a million people left homeless by the disaster, however, experts have warned that disease could strike in the makeshift camps with nowhere to put human waste and limited access to clean water.
At the hospital, some patients including 70-year-old Belismene Jean Baptiste said they got sick after drinking water from a public canal.
"I ran to the bathroom four times last night vomiting," Jean Baptiste said.
The sick come from across the Artibonite Valley, a starkly desolate region of rice fields and deforested mountains. The area did not experience significant damage in the Jan. 12 quake but has absorbed thousands of refugees from the devastated capital 45 miles south of St. Marc.
Trucks loaded with medical supplies including rehydration salts were to be sent from Port-au-Prince to the hospital, said Jessica DuPlessis, an OCHA spokeswoman. Doctors at the hospital said they also needed more personnel to handle the flood of patients.
Elyneth Tranckil was among dozens of relatives standing outside the hospital gate as new patients arrived near death.
"Police have blocked the entry to the hospital, so I can't get in to see my wife," Tranckil said.
The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince issued an advisory urging people to drink only bottled or boiled water and eat only food that has been thoroughly cooked.ST. MARC, Haiti, Oct. 22, 2010

A burns victim has expressed his shock at having his blistered hand wrapped in a Tesco freezer bag by hospital staff.
Nicholas Robertson, 38, was taken to hospital after accidentally setting his arm ablaze with a cigarette after spilling lighter fluid on himself.
He was left stunned though when medical staff at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, once they had treated the burn, used a plastic bag from the supermarket to keep it protected and sterile.
Stunned: Nursing staff at the University Hospital of Wales covered Nicholas Robertson's injury in a plastic bag from the supermarket
Commenting on the treatment, Mr Robertson said: 'Is this what the NHS has come to?
'I know there are Government cuts - but wrapping patients in Tesco freezer bags is not acceptable.
'You would expected proper burns bag which are sterilised and made for different limbs.'
Nursing staff had first coated his injury with a soothing jelly before wrapping it in the plastic bag which also has the words 'contents' and 'date' stamped on it.
Mr Robertson, from Roath in Cardiff, said he had later gone on a shopping trip and ended up in his local branch of Tesco where he showed checkout staff his branded dressing.
He said: 'The cashiers in Tesco were astonished - they couldn't believe it.
'They were joking that there is now wonder they have a shortage of plastic bags if they end up at the local hospital.'
He later returned to the Cardiff hospital for further treatment and questioned nurses about the Tesco bag taped to his hand.
'They backed me up. They told me: "Something needs to be said. You can't have patients walking out in Tesco bags,"' he said.
'They were not angry with me and certainly didn't treat me any differently. They were fine, very professional. It's the fact they had to resort to this.'
The University Hospital of Wales is now investigating why the supermarket bag was used to treat the injury.
Kesh Baboolal, director of acute university hospital services for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said: 'The accident and emergency unit uses sterilised plastic bags to help protect properly treated and bandaged injuries where appropriate.
'Any medical and surgical equipment including dressings are stored, and where necessary sterilised, and safe for use.
'The health board is investing in new hand-shaped sterile bags and phasing out the current supply.'
A spokesman for the hospital simply confirmed the bag used to treat Mr Robertson's burn had been 'sterilised'.

Amnesty International has urged Saudi authorities to stop any attempt to medically paralyse a man as a judicial punishment.
A Saudi judge is reported to have asked hospitals if it is possible to cut the spinal cord of the man, found guilty of paralysing another man in a fight.
Amnesty said intentionally paralysing someone would constitute torture.
Under Islamic law in Saudi Arabia, retribution sentences can include eye-gouging and, for murder, beheading.
"We urge the Saudi Arabian authorities not to carry out such a punishment, which amounts to nothing less than torture," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, of Amnesty International.
"While those guilty of a crime should be held accountable, intentionally paralysing a man in this way would constitute torture and be a breach of its international human rights obligations."

U.S. News & World Report has released its annual list of the best hospitals in the U.S. for 2010-11. So which hospital received the most points and ranked the highest in this year’s list? Once again, it’s Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, which has held the No. 1 spot for the last 20 years.
Out of nearly 5,000 hospitals reviewed, only 152 made the cut. Each of these hospitals appears in the rankings for at least one of the 16 specialties, ranging from cancer to diabetes to heart surgery.
Scores were based on objective and subjective measures such as death rates, patient safety, and reputation. U.S. News says it publishes the Best Hospitals list each year to help patients who need high-stakes care because of the complexity of their condition.
These 14 hospitals, in order by most points overall, made the “honor roll” list for ranking near the top in at least six of the specialties:
1. Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
