Even if the planet doubled the amount of solar and wind power available tomorrow, there would still be a shortage of clean electricity. We need to grab energy from wherever we can find it, which is why piezoelectricity—the charge that gathers in solid materials like crystal and ceramic in response to strain—has recently begun to pique the interest of entrepreneurs and scientists alike. A number of materials are piezoelectric, including topaz, quartz, cane sugar, and tourmaline. That means a charge begins accumulating inside these materials when pressure is applied. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/your-details/30439-electricity-generating-dance-floors-and-piezoelectric-roadwaysEven if the planet doubled the amount of solar and wind power available tomorrow,... more

Time for an update from oly90808. lol Yes that said 400 MW!!
It's been so hectic over here in the good ol' USA, specifically in California, ever since the Los Angeles County Board who overseas energy decisions for southern california responded back in October 2010 that indeed they would be the first in the world to receive power from a solar tower of this magnitude. There have been multiple articles all of which can be viewed on EVM's website.
From my point of few, I can say this....
F......... YAHHH!!!!!! THIS IS HUGE!!!
And now,, aside from the US, China, and now India,,, EVM is going global.
They have secured funds, the best engineering firm on the planet to do FEED, and so much more. Check out the articles/pdf's and get up to speed.
This is going to be the biggest groundbreaking ceremony in the US since the East Meets West Golden Spike ceremony.
The world need Solar Towers, and anything solar for that matter.
Huddle Up!
Njoy, Oly

As was discussed on the February 2nd edition of Pratt on Texas, the ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) rolling blackouts across the state could have been prevented with better planning and policy.
Electrical engineer, Ross Aten, joined Robert Pratt to talk about how too many coal and natural gas power plants within ERCOT were taken offline for maintenance. Ross also explained that if you, ‘ran the numbers’, the only way ERCOT could have met peak winter demand usage is if wind energy across the state was producing at significant totals. However, because of the ice storm and lack of wind, windmills weren’t producing any energy.
That is scary to think about. ERCOT without any public proclamation or policy announcement, put all of its proverbial eggs into the ‘wind energy basket’. Or, think about it this way, because of bureaucratic policy and bad planning, millions of Texans had to deal with rolling blackouts during deathly cold conditions.
We heard some horrible stories on the show from people in Abilene that had electronics damaged, and destroyed, because of the electricity popping on and off during the rolling blackouts.
A quick aside, I know the term ‘rolling blackout’ has become accepted because it’s a temporary blackout that is supposed to ‘spread the pain’, but in reality a blackout is a blackout. It doesn’t matter how your home or business doesn’t have power. If you don’t have power, you can’t work and in many conditions, can’t live.
Luckilly (for today), the Lubbock Power & Light and Xcel Energy grids in the South Plains and Panhandle is not connected to ERCOT. I’d imagine that if those two companies systems were connected to ERCOT, the rolling blackouts would have encompassed an even larger portion of the state.

The United States is too reliant on China for minerals crucial to new clean energy technologies, making the American economy vulnerable to shortages of materials needed for a range of green products — from compact fluorescent light bulbs to electric cars to giant wind turbines.
So warns a detailed report to be released on Wednesday morning by the United States Energy Department. The report, which predicts that it could take 15 years to break American dependence on Chinese supplies, calls for the nation to increase research and expand diplomatic contacts to find alternative sources, and to develop ways to recycle the minerals or replace them with other materials.
.....
China now produces nearly all the world’s supply of the minerals.

We are now three to five generations removed from the rural backbone that strengthened America. The world at large has undergone a similar transformation as the promise of easier work has created a migration to big cities. These mega-cities could be seen as an experiment gone awry, as general well-being has declined, with suicide rates increasing across the world. Crowded conditions and economic strife have led to rampant crime, pollution, corporate malfeasance, and a dog-eat-dog type of competition that can be described as a temporary insanity.
The economic crisis we are living through has been the final straw for many people, as promises of a better, easier, and more creative life seem to have been sold to us by carnival-style tricksters who are laughing all the way to (their) bank.
Here are the top reasons for becoming self-sufficient; these are based on fundamental, systemic concerns for why undertaking this life change will not be a fly-by-night fad, but rather a long-lasting means for personal independence.
10 Reasons to Become Self-Sufficient
Freedom from market manipulation - The traditional market-driven investment vehicles are more and more obviously controlled by traders and banking institutions. The debacle of the private Federal Reserve Bank is just the icing on the cake to a previous decade full of Ponzi-type schemes. Now, the institutionalized looting of retirement money is being planned.
Hedging against inflation - Have you noticed the price of goods lately? Even Wal-Mart issilently raising its prices. People might have a choice whether or not to buy stocks or gold, but people have to eat -- the current increases in basic goods portend hyperinflation, and will not ease anytime soon. Food shortages could make the problem exponentially worse.
3. Increasing health and wellness - It has now been revealed that some "organic" items have been falsely labeled. In addition, a host of "GMO-free" brands have been exposed as deceptive. GMO food lacks the nutritional value of what can be grown in the average backyard. GMO mega-corporation, Monsanto, has a sordid history and has continuously trampled on our trust. It is time that we do the work ourselves.

The world will run out of oil around 100 years before replacement energy sources are available if oil use and development of new fuels continue at the current pace, a US study warns.
In the study, researchers at the University of California, Davis (UC-Davis) used the current share prices of oil companies and alternative energy companies to predict when replacement fuels will be ready to fill the gap left when oil runs dry.
And the findings weren't very good for the oil-hungry world.
If the world's oil reserves were the 1.332 trillion barrels they were estimated to be in 2008 and oil consumption was some 85.22 million barrels a day and growing at 1.3 percent a year, oil would be depleted by 2041, says the study published online last week in Environmental Science and Technology.
But by plugging current stock market prices into a complex equation, UC-Davis engineering professor Debbie Niemeier and postdoctoral researcher Nataliya Malyshkina calculated that a viable alternative fuel to oil won't be available before the middle of next century.
The researchers analyzed the share prices of 25 oil companies quoted on US, European and Australian stock exchanges, and of 44 alternative energy companies.
They found that the market capitalization, or total value of all stock shares, of traditional oil companies far outstripped that of the alternative energy companies.
That indicated that investors believe oil is going to do well in the near future and occupy a larger share of the energy market than alternative energy, said Malyshkina.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a revised estimate for the amount of conventional, undiscovered oil in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska is a fraction of a previous estimate.
The group estimates about 896 million barrels of such oil are in the reserve, about 90 percent less than a 2002 estimate of 10.6 billion barrels.
The new estimate is mainly due to the incorporation of new data from recent exploration drilling revealing gas occurrence rather than oil in much of the area, the geological survey said.

This will be the most monumental story since the coupling of the East and West Railroad Systems.
Welp folks, this is it, here in southern california we are at the forefront of the new Solar Tower technology implementation all waiting the approval of the SCPPA, a local power authority whose sole purpose is to govern/approve/reject/monitor/etc power needs of Southern California.
For those of us who have waited patiently, and feel that Solar Towers are the viable if not Holy Grail of Solar Technology is here!
As we speak, a meeting has been scheduled for Oct 21, 2010 at the SCPPA, a power authority whose sole purpose is to commission and regulate how we southern californians receive our power.
I personally have waited over 2 years for this announcement, and approx a year since I first learned that Enviromission, the world patent owner of Solar Tower technology, except in China, has taken it's business model and planted its solar roots here in the USA, is now up for approval in less than 2 days!
AWESOME! In the words of Arnold Swartzenagger, "southern california is the natural leader with it's media presence and is able to make tremendous change occur" in so many words, however, he used this last year not long ago to advise he will back more NUCLEAR and wind power, with NO mention of Solar Tower energy. Damn politics, i swear.... I can not wait to see what Arnold our gov has to say about this, or he has some Veto power, who friggen knows, but certainly we should all care since 20% of all power consumption must come from renewable energy by 2010, according to posts i have read this past 2 years. anyfoo..
If you wish to read the media statement from Enviromission, and start spreading the word at the water cooler tomorrow, please do so... here is this link.
sorry if there is no Image due to currents clunky new interface for posts, however, if you dont, and you should by now, know what a solar tower looks like by now. Here is another link to Enviromissions webpage in .AU where you can watch the video I posted years ago.

Green Home Designs - Get started going green today... Do your part for yourself and the Earth, find your eco-friendly home plans and builder...
Types of Self-Generated Power
• Solar – This type of energy harnesses the heat from the sun through the use of solar panels and uses the energy produced to produce electricity for the home and to heat water for household appliances such as heat units and air conditioners, hot water heaters and heated floors.
• Wind- Using wind turbines to produce electricity for your green home is another choice for harnessing the force of nature for alternative energy. Using the power of the wind to produce household electricity can save quite a bit of money for the homeowner. The initial cost of a wind turbine system may seem expensive but is far outweighed by the benefits of the power provided.
• Biodiesel- By burning low emission fuel sources such as corn pellets, wood, or other alternative fuels, energy produced can be used to power homes in virtually any section of the country. This makes for efficient heating and cooling of homes that lessens the use of traditional power sources during critical months of the year.
• Geothermal- This use of the earth’s natural ground temperatures to heat and cool homes allows for a moderate indoor climate to be gained without placing a strain on traditional heating and cooling units by heating or cooling the water employed by these systems to be moderated by the temperature of the ground before it enters the system.
There are a lot of great earth conscious architects and contractors around the country that can aid and assist you in the development and planning of a green, energy efficient home. While the initial costs of putting some of the products and techniques into your new home may seem daunting, the overall benefits and the cost savings are definitely worth the trouble and time.

Tues night Toronto Greenhouse hosted a debate between the Toronto mayoral candidates. The event was held at the National Club and moderated by the Toronto Star’s Business Columnist, Tyler Hamilton. For those who were unable to attend – or who have not read the papers this morning – former Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, George Smitherman, took every opportunity he could to slam mayoral candidate and current city councilor, Rob Ford. By all accounts Smitherman simply ran circles around Ford, jeeringly labeling Ford, “the numbers guy” and “Rob ‘King Coal’ Ford – in reference to Ford’s conservative ideals and plan for putting the $4-billion dollars of provincial funding for a light rail transit network and building subways instead.
Smitherman’s constant hounding aside, Ford’s most unpopular answer came in response to Green Energy:
“Green energy — it’s just too expensive, ladies and gentlemen. We’d love to use it but it’s far too expensive right now.”
Ford’s response was met with a chorus of boos from the crowd.
However disagreeable Ford’s statement was to the crowd, we have to wonder… is he right? Does he know something they don’t? Or is it possible that a crowd of citizens has obtained undisclosed information that Ford and the rest of the people on the front lines in the energy industry aren’t privy to?
After seeing articles like this, from the Canadian Free Press (CFP), and after speaking to so many readers and citizens of Ontario, I know for a fact that there are some misconceptions when it comes to “Green Energy”. Particularly wind.
As the CFP article states, wind energy truly is this seasons hottest trend. From Paris to Milan, Copenhagen to Toronto, governments are going gaga for wind.
I’ve spoken about this before on Enviralment but as is often the case, the hype around wind tends to cause politicians and consumers to overlook the fine print. Specifically when it comes to capacity and output.
Capacity is a funny word in the energy industry. It’s a word that has somehow lost its meaning over the years of substantial technological advancements in renewable energy and the modern rise of the smart grid. Not a cliche or buzzword, but it’s commonly attached to lavish claims and expectations within the argot of political figures and renewable proponents.

An electricity-generating fuel-cell system known as the Bloom Box sparked a huge buzz in the energy debate six months ago — and since then, still more ventures have surfaced to promise better living through chemistry.
Will future fuel cells make good on those promises? We should know in the next couple of years.
One of the concepts, detailed on Monday at an American Chemical Society meeting in Boston, combines the environmental friendliness of solar power with the 24/7 capability of fuel-cell generation. When the sun shines, electricity from solar panels would feed into a personal power grid, and also split water into hydrogen and oxygen. When the sun isn't out, the hydrogen and oxygen can be recombined to keep the electricity flowing, producing pure water in the process.
"Our goal is to make each home its own power system," Daniel Nocera, a chemist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explained in a news release discussing the system. "We're working toward development of 'personalized' energy units that can be manufactured, distributed and installed inexpensively. There certainly are major obstacles to be overcome — existing fuel cells and solar cells must be improved, for instance. Nevertheless, one can envision villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic system."

According to www.energy.eu we don't have to worry. We have LOTS of oil left. Enough to last us another 37 years. IF we don't do something stupid like drilling more wells, or expanding tar sands production, or using petroleum faster.
The EEU calculated how much oil there is left in the world by adding up all of the known oil reserves in the world, then calculated the date and time that the last drop of oil on earth would be used up at the current rate of use(as of Jan, 1, 2010)
The time and date that the last drop of oil is gone will be 20:58 Oct 22, 2047.
(Find the numbers under the tab "depletion" toward the bottom of the page)
Of coarse, if we drill more and use more----the party will end sooner. Take off one year for each 1% that oil production and use expands.http://www.energy.eu/#depletion

Across the U.S., poor communities are grossly under-served when it comes to education, nutrition, housing and health care.
June 4, 2010 |
Last week in New York authorities announced that at Harlem Hospital Center, the largest health facility in that historic neighborhood, doctors had failed to read 4,000 heart tests -- for three years -- and that 200 of these patients died. These were not simply routine tests, but echocardiograms, ordered when patients showed severe symptoms. That does not happen in affluent neighborhoods.
Among other reasons, heart sickness is elsewhere an enormous profit opportunity -- heart valve and bypass surgeries are a go-go business. But not for sick, poor people. Their Medicaid coverage fails to fully incentivize America's insatiable medical industrial appetite.
According to a cardiologist brought in on an emergency basis to start reading the long backlog of tests in Harlem, approximately half were abnormal and 20 to 30 percent needed immediate medical care. "This is very, very appalling," he told the New York Times.
And it's not just in Harlem.
Across the U.S., poor communities are grossly under-served: education, nutrition, housing and health care. To a large extent, this explains the chasm in life expectancy between white people and so-called minorities.
How much worse does it get? A Brandeis University study recently underscored the growing wealth divide. According to the Federal Reserve, for every dollar of wealth owned by a white family, a black or Latino family owns just 16 cents.
And as this -- the great marginalization of America marches on -- Democrats, including the president, wrestle with Republicans for smidgeon of reform. Is it anywhere close to enough?
For all the talk of Wall Street reform, and new consumer protections, and talk of alternative energy policy, the fact remains that for most people, America is a sinking ship. And minority communities are the first to be thrown over the side.
Where are the lifeboats?Across the U.S., poor communities are grossly under-served when it comes to education,... more
