Recently Mississippi's Itawamba Agricultural High School canceled prom because Constance McMillen, a lesbian who wanted to dress in a tux and attend it with her girlfriend. To make up for it's negative publicity the town threw two proms and invited Constance, two learning disabled students to the fake prom with 5 other attendees, while the real prom rocked on other side of town.
Article below:
Constance McMillen just wanted what teenage girls have dreamed about since time immemorial -- to go to the prom with the person she's dating. In McMillen's case, that person happens to be another girl. But the possibility of some same-sex jamming to "I Gotta Feeling" didn't sit too well with the folks at Mississippi's Itawamba Agricultural High School. Reasoning that no prom was better than a prom with lesbians, they abruptly canceled the whole affair last month. Cue media frenzy, ACLU lawsuit, Facebook uproar.
After an embarrassing glare of attention on Itawamba, it seemed a happy ending was in sight. Last Tuesday, the school agreed to host an off-campus prom and told Constance she could, per her stated intention, bring her date and wear a tux. On Friday night, McMillen and her girlfriend showed up at the Fulton Country Club ready to party. There, she says, she found just seven other revelers, including two learning disabled students.
Worse, she claims that her classmates were off doing the Macarena at an alternate event, arranged with the aid and consent of the parents and staff of her school. Speaking to the Advocate this week, McMillen said, "They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them ... everyone went to the other one I wasn't invited to."

US News and World Report ranked the top 100 high schools in the United States.
The highest rated school in the nation, was Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia. The school offers courses in DNA science, neurology, and quantum physics.
That's pretty impressive. I'm sure all of these students will attend incredible universities. And for this, I feel so sorry for all of the graduate student instructors, who will teach their freshman sections.
Students who come from great high schools, end up being the cockiest. I know from personal experience. I went to an excellent humanities magnet school (though not good enough for this list.) We studied and embraced socialism, postmodernity, and the philosophy of aesthetics. We were thus, very well prepared to bullshit the hell out of first-year TAs.
I 'd throw around words like hegemony and poststucturalism, even though I didn't actually understand them. I'd talk about Foucault and Sartre, despite only reading several paragraphs of their writing. I was very good at convincing these instructors that I understood what I was talking about.
Since TAs don't expect much from freshmen, they reward them heavily for throwing around buzzwords.
As I learned more my head grew. I became overly confident with my intellect. I attribute my high school experience to my current levels of pretension, elitism, and narcissism.
So before you consider sending your kids to an excellent school like the International Academy of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan or KIPP Houston High School, think the about the effects this might have on your kids later in life.
Because as the bard once wrote:
"Nobody likes it when homeboys be gloating 'bout their high schools."US News and World Report ranked the top 100 high schools in the United States.

It's always interesting to see what people have to say about epic fails, uber pwnages, and n00bs.
This fail tells the tale of Michael. All we really know about the graduating senior is that he never had a girlfriend. His senior quote is now elating fans around the world.
But this brings up the most important of questions... What was your senior quote?
Current.com user lolitanimatronic chose:
"You're blockin' my cheesehole."
If Panzer_Tanzler could go back in time his would be:
"Yo school, tell me how my ass taste".
NuclearLullaby used a Buddha quote but has some general guidelines for selecting a quality senior quote:
"Things to never use as yearbook quotes! : Any thing about your status in relationships! Quotes from the bible (honestly those are very lame!) Anything misspelled, stoner style quotes!
Things to use!: Funny create your own style quotes, Movie lines( not cheesy ones though!!!),Words from songs! Words in other languages! Words from famous wise people"
My school didn't have senior quotes, but when I ran for Student Body Treasurer my slogan was:
"Don't vote for me because I'm qualified, vote for me because I'm popular."
Needless to say, I won that election. (Because nobody else was running.)
What are some of the memorable quotes from your high school experience? Add them as comments below!

Students Question 'Failing' Status of Their Schools
Just how bad are high schools named as California’s lowest performing schools? Students at several of them in San Francisco say their schools are being unfairly judged.
Last week, the California Board of Education released a list of the 188 lowest-performing public schools in the state. On that list are 10 San Francisco schools, including John O’Connell High School and Mission High School.
The San Francisco school board has four options in dealing with these schools: convert them to charter schools, fire the principal and replace more than half of the staff, “transform the schools,” or shut them down and send the students to a higher-achieving school.
The state’s failing grades for John O’Connell and Mission drew a heated response from the schools’ students. On Monday, we surveyed a random sampling of 18 students who attend John O’Connell High School and Mission High School, asking how they view their schools and the education they get there.

The proposal by state Sen. Chris Buttars would chip away at Utah's $700-million shortfall. He's since offered a toned-down version: Just make senior year optional.
By DeeDee Correll
February 14, 2010 | 3:21 p.m.
Reporting from Denver - At Utah's West Jordan High School, the halls have swirled lately with debate over the merits of 12th grade:
Is it a waste of time? Are students ready for the real world at 17?
For student body president J.D. Williams, 18, the answer to both questions is a resounding no. "I need this year," he said, adding that most of his classmates feel the same way.
The sudden buzz over the relative value of senior year stems from a recent proposal by state Sen. Chris Buttars that Utah make a dent in its budget gap by eliminating the 12th grade.
The notion quickly gained some traction among supporters who agreed with the Republican's assessment that many seniors fritter away their final year of high school, but faced vehement opposition from other quarters, including in his hometown of West Jordan.
"My parents are against it," Williams said. "All the teachers at the school are against it. I'm against it."
Buttars has since toned down the idea, suggesting instead that senior year become optional for students who complete their required credits early. He estimated the move could save up to $60 million, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
The proposal comes as the state faces a $700-million shortfall and reflects the creativity -- or desperation -- of lawmakers all over.
"You're looking at these budget gaps where lawmakers have to use everything and anything to try to resolve them," said Todd Haggerty, a policy associate with the National Conference of State Legislatures. "It's left lawmakers with very unpopular decisions."
In Utah, the opt-out proposal could prove more politically feasible than Buttars' initial plan.
"The bottom line is saving taxpayer dollars while improving options for students," said state Sen. Howard A. Stephenson, a Republican and co-chairman of the Public Education Appropriations Subcommittee. "The more options we give to students to accelerate, the more beneficial it is to students and taxpayers."
But some education officials say they don't think the plan represents a change.
"We've always had an option in place for early graduation," said Debra Roberts, chairwoman of the Utah Board of Education, adding that it's OK to give students the choice to graduate early, but that they shouldn't be pushed to leave.
Relatively few students -- about 200 every year -- take advantage of early graduation, said Brenda Hales, state associate superintendent.
Buttars, who did not respond to calls for comment, has said he would offer incentives to encourage students to graduate early. Last week, his proposal met with approval from some Utahans who praised his efforts to cut costs, if not the plan itself.
"In a really hard economic time, we have to think of new options," said Aleta Taylor, a South Jordan mother of seven, adding that she needed more specifics before supporting the plan.
Whether the plan proves viable, it does raise a valid point about senioritis, said William Sederburg, the state commissioner of higher education. "The thing that Sen. Buttars tapped into is that too many seniors take the senior year off," he said.
As far as high school senior Williams is concerned, 12th grade is as hard, or rewarding, as a student wants to make it.
"Senior year hasn't been a waste for me," said Williams, who writes for his school paper, plays lacrosse and sings in two choirs, as well as taking college-level courses. "If you're the type of kid who will slack off, you'd find a way to do that in sophomore or junior year anyway."
Correll writes for The Times.

"The fliers consisted of simple medical studies that disprove vaccine safety claims by the CDC. On December 16th Breckenridge High School was holding a free vaccination clinic for all willing students, I signed up on the 14th and intended to enter the science room to hand out educational fliers. When I began handing them out I was physically pushed around by my principal, this didn't stop me from handing out many more fliers to the waiting students, some of which changed their mind and began to leave the line. After being threatened with arrest and removal from school property, I went back to class. When I was dismissed at 1:30 I ran back to the clinic. After being physical blocked by a public health official I slid under her arm and began peacefully offering nurses more information. This is when my science teacher Scott Wermerskirchen Assaulted me by pushing, bumping, grabbing, and aggressively 'bearhugging' me in an attempt to get my video camera. The whole altercation was captured on multiple security cameras and seen by over 20 witnesses. The school is refusing to release any video footage, and has not taken action against this teacher. However, the punishment for handing out fliers was a 2 day out of school suspension which was issued to me. This is ludicrous unjust and downright fascist.
Every student in this film has given me WRITTEN CONSENT to film and broadcast them, although I did not operate the camera, I therefore avoided breaking any rules.""The fliers consisted of simple medical studies that disprove vaccine safety... more
