The Sun announced today that after 12 years they were no longer backing Labour. Rather than sit quietly about this both parties have decided to battle it out using Google as their stomping ground. Type in "labour" (if you're in the UK) and you get ads from both The Sun & The Labour party slagging off each other.
Looks like the next General Election is going to be good for Google ad words if no one elseThe Sun announced today that after 12 years they were no longer backing Labour.... more

One of the original goals of Google has always been to help people find the information they are looking for and get out of the way as fast as possible. It was a point of pride, and in fact a design principle, to get people off the search results page to other places on the Internet. Yahoo was the site that tried to keep you from ever leaving, Google was the opposite.
Well, it was easier to send people away when Google was just a search engine. Now it has apps and Gmail and Google Maps and Google Books, and a lot of other reasons to stick around on Google itself. But there is still a clear demarcation between its content/communication sites and search. At least there was until late last week when it launched Google Places on Google Maps. Google Places is a local search page for restaurants and other local businesses that brings together the address, phone number, Website, maps, description, directions, photos and reviews all on one page.
When you click on a pin for a local business or place of interest on Google Maps a bubble will open up, and if you click “more info” sometimes it will take you to the Google Places page. So far, so good. Google Places is simply making Google Maps better, right? One of the original goals of Google has always been to help people find the... more

At Google’s Searchology event in May, Google announced the impending arrival of Google Squared, a Labs project that would return search results in spreadsheet form.
Today it appears as though Google Squared has been released out into the wild. Now your search results can take a completely different form, so you can remove content, add suggested columns of your own, and even save your squares for future access.
Since Google Squared is just your search results in column and row form, you’re best off making queries on groups of things. So, you can search for television shows and get back a list of shows, accompanying images, descriptions, language, and run time in a format that’s much easier to consume than typical search results. You can add additional columns and Google will try to help you fill in the blanks. At Google’s Searchology event in May, Google announced the impending arrival of... more

The act of Googling oneself has become the digital age's premiere guilty pleasure — an activity enjoyed by all and admitted by few. The phenomenon has even been the subject of scholarly research. Last year, a team of Swiss and Australian social scientists published a study concluding that the practice of self-Googling (or "Egosurfing" as it's sometimes called) can partly be traced to a rise in narcissism in society but is also an attempt by people to identify and shape their personal online "brand." The authors of the survey no doubt returned to their cubicles and Googled themselves to see if the study was posted online. The act of Googling oneself has become the digital age's premiere guilty pleasure —... more

Google continues its supremacy, despite the clamor over emerging search engines attempting to dethrone it. These providers approach search from different perspectives (semantic, social, community-based) and present their results in fresh forms (design, layout, structure) in the hope that their new package will appeal more to the masses. However, it's apparent that search dominance is as much about branding, popularity, and financial backing as it is about relevance or looks.
The media offers the momentum, while many web users watch the search engine war with anticipation, keeping faith that somehow, one of the new kids will prove Google-worthy. While at first sight these entities look promising, deeper scrutiny reveals their inferiority to Google.
The Google killer phrase still triggers the sort of reactions that provide high traffic—and traffic is the lifeblood of any online publication. All of Google's moves are monitored, analyzed, and dissected. Search experts, SEO gurus, analysts, web prophets, tech writers, and even common bloggers cover all news on Google with remarkable fervor. Yet, very few of these Google analysts actually know what they're writing about. In their ignorance, the media hand Google even more power to reign supreme.
Almost all recent articles about search engines and Google killers have had two key effects:
misleading the public into believing that these emerging search providers have developed new technologies and algorithms foreign to Google
lowering the credibility of the recently established search engines (for example, Cuil)
