Two civil wars, illegal logging and poaching - it was thought this was more than enough to wipe out Liberia's population of pygmy hippos.
But this rare and endangered species has survived against the odds and there are photographs to prove it.
A team led by the Zoological Society of London travelled to the West African country.
It was delighted to discover that, despite their fears, the hippo population had not been wiped out.
Just three days after setting up hidden cameras in the Liberian forest, the team of zoologists were amazed to capture the pygmy hippos on film.
Ben Collen of the London Zoological Society said he remained highly concerned about the survival of the little hippos because they still face the threat of deforestation and bushmeat hunters.

Rescue workers in Venezuela have found two flight recorders from the wreckage of a passenger jet that crashed into the Andes mountains, killing all 46 people on board.
The "black box" recorders, located on Saturday, may explain what happened in the last moments before local airline Santa Barbara's flight 518 crashed.
The aeroplane is thought to have hit a 4,000 metre rock wall known as Indian Face on Thursday, soon after taking off from Merida, a high-altitude tourist town.
Ramon Vinas, who heads Venezuela's civil aviation authority, turned over the boxes to public investigators.
He said one contained recordings of the pilots' conversations and the other held technical data.
Searchers were still trying to recover the charred remains of the 43 passengers and three crew members.Rescue workers in Venezuela have found two flight recorders from the wreckage of a... more

He was in his third final at the competition when Best in Show judge, and former Crufts champion, Clare Coxall said he had "sold himself" to her.

Television weather forecasts are to adopt a colour-coded "traffic light" system to warn the public of extreme weather conditions.
As Britain faces up to the biggest storm of the winter, the Met Office hopes the new red, amber, yellow and green warnings will make it easier for the public to understand the threats from approaching weather systems.
Ferocious storms are expected to batter Britain later tonight, with winds of up to 80mph and coastal flooding.Forecasters have warned the public to stay indoors through the night and to avoid unnecessary journeys in the strongest storm of the winter. Winds powerful enough to uproot trees and damage buildings are expected to disrupt transport networks and power supplies.
The Met Office has also warned that the heavy rain and gale-force winds will coincide with spring tides, increasing the risk of flooding on the west coast.
The last of the old-style weather warnings have been issued for much of the UK for tonight and tomorrow.
Officials will delay introducing the new traffic-light warning system until the gales have subsided, because of unease about making the switch in the midst of the severe weather.Television weather forecasts are to adopt a colour-coded "traffic light"... more

Visiting the bank manager used to be a somewhat sobering experience.
How times have changed.
If Barclays is successful in its £200million bid for Russia's Expobank, it may find that the assets are more tangible than it had imagined.
Scantily-clad employees – ranging from secretaries to senior executives – have spiced up the Moscow-based bank's image with a 2008 calendar that is certain to raise eyebrows with the UK giant.
The women, aged between 20 and 33, peeled off to reveal an unexpected side to the world of commerce, with their pictures accompanied by provocative slogans doubling as advertising messages.
The models include the bank's chief economist for super-rich VIP clients, Anna Pogodina (Miss March), and her boss, Julia Kovyneva (Miss April), who is sprawled across a bed.

When Thomas Robert Daley dives off the 10 metre platform in Beijing on Aug 22, he will make history as the youngest male ever to represent Great Britain at an Olympic Games. Can looting be patriotic? Two women who took part in the Belgrade riots to protest Kosovo's independence seem to think the two go hand in hand. A video clip now on the Internet — entitled "Kosovo for Sneakers" — shows two girls going from shop to shop with armfuls of looted items.
Goods drip from their overburdened arms. They drop a sweater, but pick up a box of chocolates — and on and on.
The mobile phone footage posted Friday on the videosharing Web site You Tube became an instant hit, triggering dozens of comments on local blogs and forums. The girls, surprised at sudden fame, contacted a local television to tell their side of the story.
"We came to Belgrade to defend Kosovo," one of the girls, her face blurred to protect identity and identified only as Maja, told B92 television. "We started looting when they all did."Can looting be patriotic? Two women who took part in the Belgrade riots to protest... more

The sale of red roses and red gifts has been banned by Saudi Arabia's religious police in the run-up to Valentine's Day, reports a local newspaper.
Officials from the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice warned flower and gift shops to remove all red items, including roses and wrapping paper, from their shelves.
"They visited us last night," an unidentified florist told the Saudi Gazette. "They gave us warnings and this morning we packed up all the red items."
In Riyadh, the ban came into force on Sunday and will remain until after February 14.
The authorities believe celebrating Valentine's Day is un-Islamic and encourages relations out of wedlock, which are strictly forbidden.
The crackdown has pushed up the price of the flowers on the black market, with some florists making deliveries in the middle of the night, the paper said. The sale of red roses and red gifts has been banned by Saudi Arabia's religious... more

Disgraced sprinter Dwain Chambers claims he has been made to "feel like a leper" on his return to the sport having served a ban for failing a drugs test.
The 29-year-old won his battle to be part of the British team at next month's World Indoor Championships on Tuesday in Valencia even though the UK Athletics selection committee were "unanimous in their desire not to select him".
Chambers won the 60 metres trial race at Sheffield, which should have automatically guaranteed him a place on the team for Spain, and after UKA admitted they reluctantly had to select him he said: "I'm being made to feel like a leper. A terrible stigma has been attached to me but people need to know I am clean."
He added in the Sun: "Yes, I did something wrong. I did the crime -- but I've done my time and now I've moved on.
"Other people are allowed to get on with their lives once they have served a punishment -- so why can't I get on with mine?
"I'm only doing what I'm legally entitled to do. If the law forbade me from running, I wouldn't be doing it."

Pepsi is set to launch a new 'healthy' cola, made with all-natural ingredients.
Pepsi Raw uses ingredients like apple extract, coffee leaf and sparkling water and apparently contains no artificial preservatives, colours, flavourings or sweeteners.
The change in ingredients means the new drink looks much lighter than the more traditional colas, and is also not as fizzy.
In the process of cutting out the usual artificial colourings and flavourings, Pepsi has also managed to shave a significant number of calories from its product, down to 90 per serving, rather than 120.
'We are really proud that the UK is leading the way with the launch of Pepsi Raw, which is the most significant innovation from Pepsi UK in the last 15 years,' Bruno Gruwez, Pepsi's marketing director, said. Pepsi is set to launch a new 'healthy' cola, made with all-natural... more

Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Courtney Love and the late Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, has spoken about dealing with her parents' fans.
The 15-year-old has said that, while appreciating why fans of Nirvana and Hole would take an interest in her, she finds the whole experience somewhat unsettling. Speaking with Harper's Bazaar, Frances Bean said:
"These people are fascinated by me, but I haven't done anything. If you're a big Nirvana fan, a big Hole fan, then I understand why you would want to get to know me, but I'm not my parents. I get it, I really do, but at the same time
it's creepy. People need to wait until I've done something valid with my life".
Asked what would that be, she said that - somewhat wisely - that she was considering journalism or photography. She added:
"I'm taking my time. But I get asked what I want to do all the time because of my parents and because of the life I live".

The first mobile phones fitted with Google's Android software platform made their debut at an industry trade show on Monday, a milestone for the Internet giant as it looks to dominate the wireless world.
A handful of chip makers -- ARM, Marvell, Qualcomm, NEC, Texas Instruments and ST Microelectronics -- showed off prototype handsets at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Google launched Android last year, hoping to establish its software as the standard operating system for mobile phones and to improve the quality of web-browsing for handset users.
"It's definitely very promising," an analyst for technology research firm Gartner, Carolina Milanesi, told AFP. "This means that we should be on track to see commercial devices in the second half of 2008."
The idea is that Android will lead to radically improved functionality, notably for web browsing, meaning more people will use their mobile phones for Internet surfing and other applications.
Internet use on mobile phones can currently be a frustrating experience, with clunky software and slow download speeds.
"There are few phones that provide a compelling web experience," explained a spokesman for Google, Barry Schnitt. "As people use the web more, they'll use Google more and we'll be able to sell more relevant advertising."The first mobile phones fitted with Google's Android software platform made their... more

Parton, 62, said on Monday she would postpone her upcoming North American tour after doctors told her to take it easy for six to eight weeks to rest her sore back.
"Hey, you try wagging these puppies around a while and see if you don't have back problems," the folksy singer-songwriter said in a statement.
The tour was due to begin on February 28 in Minneapolis, two days after the release of "Backwoods Barbie," her first album of mainstream country music in 17 years. She hopes to hit the road in late April.Dolly Parton's breasts may be two of the wonders of the entertainment world, but... more
